Derek

Sorry to repeat myself, but go watch this show. I know it's weird seeing Ricky Gervais playing a special needs adult. But just get over that, and you'll see some of the most touching, wonderful stories. Must-see.

The wife and I just finished "Nurse Jackie."  Liked it, didn't love it, but finished it nonetheless.  Looking for something new.

Watched ep1 of "Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce."  Is there more gratuitous T&A as the season moves on?

How's "Wentworth"?  Just looking at the still shot on Netflix reminds me of a knock off of OITNB.  But I'm hearing it might be better.
It's certainly on par with OITNB, and I could understand many thinking it's better. It's a whole lot darker (though, that's not saying much as Orange has a very light tone for a prison show). It's an interesting watch for someone that also watches Orange, but it's really just a very different show. I like both quite a bit (probably Orange a little more).

Nothing about that seems weird.

Oh it's really weird. I mentioned that I tried Derek a year ago and gave up in five minutes because it was so odd. But the story is set in an elder care home, and the stories are funny and quite emotionally powerful. I think it was a terrible choice for Gervais to play a special needs person. He could have easily found an unknown actor to melt right into this character. Still, it's a very good series.

While it's not "must see TV" I kind of enjoyed "Narcos", especially the clone of a young Burt Reynolds as a Mexican cop.

I didn't enjoy that I can't multi-task while it's on (English subtitles 90% of the time) and that it didn't wrap up the Escobar situation at the end of the season.

I gave it the same 5 minutes you did but haven't tried it again. Not sure I can get past him, and I really like Gervais.

I really liked it and don't mind having to pay attention with the subtitles. I agree though that it probably would have been better to wrap it up. Is there really enough material at this point in the story to warrant a second season? I admit that I don't know that much about it.

Cuckoo with Andy Samberg has had it's moment thus far.  He's a new age-y hippie free spirit who travels the world and never works.  He gets married to some hottie Australian? chick in episode 1 and gets brought home to meet the parents and live with them. Plenty of cringe-worthy moments as the family tries to adjust to his unconventional ways.

I have trouble with these kinds of shows/movies because I always side with the parents and these shows become horrifying.  Same thing with the neighbor trying to get some sleep while our "heroes" next door party the night away.  Instead of applauding the hijinx of the young heroes, I side with the hard-working neighbor (cue picture of Grandpa Simpson) who has to get up the next day.  Watching them prank the neighbor who had the audacity to ask them to turn things down doesn't bring me joy.

I'm definitely turning into this. add in mean-spirited prankster humor.

Documentary Now! Season 1

Pretty psyched about this.  BIll Hader and Fred Armisen doing half-hour mockumentaries on different topics, in the style of Ian Rubbish and the Bizarros, if anyone remembers that.
watched this on IFC when it first was on...very good. really loved episode 1.

My only beef is that the best (by far) was episode 1 "Sandy Passage" and the rest were good but couldn't live up to it.

Finished S2 of "Happy Valley". It's pretty close to what S1 was in the end. Last few episodes were really strong and it's one of the better BBC cop shows.

Also on Amazon Prime on Demand thingy....ate up Season 1 last week while sick.  Great season
I liked how they both switched gears and still carried over characters from the first season in season two. Liking season two more than season one.

Wife wanted to start House of Cards. So Wire is back to my "on the road" show...hope S2 is like you say

S1 of Happy Valley was my cup of TV Tea.  Glad to hear S2 is pretty close to that very high bar.

Really?  I thought the complete opposite.  I enjoyed the rest of the episodes much better (DRONEZ might have been a little weak).  I almost didn't give the rest of the season a chance after watching the first episode.

Not at all saying you're wrong, just that different tastes are interesting.
Have you watched the documentary on which Sandy Passages is based?  Means a lot more.  Hader is fantastic.

Good show, glad you liked it.

I have 2 episodes left. I will probably finish them tomorrow. I've been putting them off for over a week because watching them means the ride is over.

Rewatching the US version of The Office. I don't remember that the first season was only 6 episodes. Was it a summer replacement? I do remember not making it through the first season when it first aired, mostly because I was a big fan of the UK version and thought it was a weak comparison. It still isn't as good. I wound up picking it back up in the second season at some point after a lot of people were saying it improved. I think they softened up Michael Scott to make him a little more palatable after the first season.

I doubt we'll watch the whole run since it got really bad during the last few seasons but the early ones were very good.

:lmao: Ah, now I get it. I fired up a cartoon for my son early this morning and noticed it said "Continue watching with John Stamos". I thought that was a little weird/creepy, but I hadn't had my coffee yet so I didn't think too deeply about it.

Re-watching it now also because my wife never really watched it.  Michael did give off a more personable, outgoing vibe after the first 6, but I don't know if he was softer exactly.  Still extremely irritating and lacking self-awareness.  I can't remember if it was a summer replacement, but I've heard tv people says before that they wish they could do a test season of like 10 episodes for any series just to work it out and get the feel for it.

i also watched the full run of parks and Rec recently, which I had only seen a few episodes of before, and the think that strikes me is how much brighter it is.  The office is much darker and more subtle and  has a better sense of realism.  Even though a few of the characters are over the top, the underlying absurdity of day to day life is captured well.  Whereas everything on parks and Rec is so over the top and I rarely related to much of it.  I think that initially they were going to take parks and Rec down a similar path, especially with brandanowicz, but then they kind of revamped things at some point after the first season (the actor who played mark alluded to this in an interview) again testifying to the role that the initial run and reflection upon it can play in shaping a show.  Which of course is why it is so crazy when some of these shows get cancelled so so early.

i also agree that I will probably give up on the office before finishing it.  Pretty sure I was out after one episode of the new boss (Robert California?) the first time around.  Really once Jim and Pam get together, especially after the baby, a lot of the show's tension goes away and it just falls flat overall.

here to recommend "sensitive skin" on Netflix. it's an adaptation from a BBC show to Canada but it's really well done. Kim Cattrall much to my surprise is really very good in this comic drama. older, affluent couple living in Toronto dealing with mid-life and aging. it's a well written and produced gem that's only 6 episodes in S1. don mckellar- who I remember from Atom Egoyan films like Exotica - is really just superb in this.

Speaking of 6 eps, Catastrophe season 2 is out.  Really entertaining, but the season is way too short.
this is a fun show. we really liked S1 and finished S2 in two nights. i wish it had more episodes maybe even. it's just fun and funny.

i would also recommend Detectorists on Netflix. it's a BBC import, too, and with that gentle british comedic sensibility. it's a comedy of manners moreso than class or anything especially broad. i liked it quite a bit and would happily watch more than the slotted 6 episode run. good comedic acting from the guy who played Gareth Keenan from the Office (UK).

Starz has a new streaming app, and Amazon video offers a Starz subscription, which you can use to access The Girlfriend Experience went live yesterday - soderburgh is involved in some capacity; getting mostly great reviews.  About a law school student who becomes a high class escort.

Exact same.  Almost didn't watch after the first episode, glad I read this and gave it a go.

My wife and I have recently watched Broadchurch, then we moved over to Happy Valley after reading the reviews on here. We were not anticipating it being that good but were pleasantly surprised. Wish they were going to continue the series but I read somewhere that it is over, at least for now. We decided to try Luther after a recommendation from here. Only two episodes in, but again, it looks like a winner. My wife and I were remarking how good the acting is in these shows (for instance the crazy chick in Luther, Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson) and the stories are riveting (perhaps a little out there but not beyond the realm of believing).

We were talking last night and comparing these BBC shows to our American Network crime drama shows - Hawaii 5 - 0, Scorpion, even the CSI's, etc etc - hands down, for at least these three BBC shows, the acting and the content is so superior to our American shows. I imagine the BBC has some ho hum shows as well but we are very impressed thus far!

We have also enjoyed Rectify and The Red Road put out by Sundance I think, but not nearly as much as the BBC shows.

So, thanks for the tips on these shows!

if you liked broadchurch check out luther and then also river they are bbc crime shows too and they are pretty awesome swc over and out take that to the bank brohans

I like the tone of Broadchurch, but I liked the show less over the course of the run.  so many red herrings, and it seemed like The Killing so often (not necessarily a bad thing, but couldn't get it out of my head).  Plus Hardy is pretty much terrible at everything.

I will check out River as well.

I noticed that the next season of TURN is now out on Netflix. First season was ok and will give the second season a chance.
