watched "logan lucky" and hollywood remake of "the secret in their eyes" last night. I was expecting another lightweight flick from Soderberg with "Logan Lucky" but it is especially flimsy. Cast is Adam Driver, Channing Tatum, and Daniel Craig but only Craig seems to have any fun. Plot feels like an afterthought and a throwaway riff on what he's done many, many times before. 

"Secret in Their Eyes" definitely feels like a remake of a better film. Great cast with Chiwetel Ojeifor, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and bit parts for Alfred Molina among others. It's a good plot that feels out of a novel or like "LA Confidential" for the post-9/11 world. Sadly, it's not especially good. It's just not well-written or directed with any panache.

you may want to consider Filmstruck for quality movies. i'm sort of with you in that the trio services do not carry the collections they once had. TV, sure, but not cinema. Amazon at least makes renting a good film possible with cheap rental fees.

Went to Filmstruck.  It's shutting down Nov. 29th. 

From what I can google, they felt their business model was too niche and look to build something in 2019 that appeals to a broader audience.

@saintfool or anybody else - have you tried mubi at all?  I think it's $7-8/month and they always have 30 movies on there, but cycle them through every day.  Seems like they cater to the more artsy crowd on there.

i have not. i'm actually considering a drop of Amazon entirely because they are raising rates next year and it's not used enough to make it worth it. i don't shop that much there really truly. i'm anticipating having to add the new Disney+ streaming service next year when it rolls out. too much good stuff there for my almost 9 yo boy.

I keep forgetting that we've been slowly watching that. feel like it's almost something- and I don't mind horsey- but the burn is slow.

we watched the kurt russell christmas thing on netflix. better than it had any right being- a fun watch for tweens and younger, IMO (and their parents). don't know that it's a classic, but it's worth the time.

I liked it much more than others here. It had a few key positives for me: 30 minute episodes, short list of characters (maybe that's from being born from a podcast-no need to bring in extra cast), and really interesting cinematography. The short duration and interesting shots made me pay close attention...very little looking at my phone, etc.

While I agree with the positives you note it felt stretched out with very little actually happening.  Worth a watch though for the excellent cinematography.

I passed this by many times.  Will watch.

Buster Scruggs by the Coen brothers is interesting.  Can't get the "Water" song out of my head, but it's a bunch of vinettes some really interesting, liked first and next to last the best.  A little long.  Would love insight on the final vinette.

Give Schitt’s Creek  a shot...it’s slightly dry, but funny

I started watching this two weeks ago, was looking for a lighthearted sitcom and saw a positive mention somewhere.  It's been better than expected, I'm already through two seasons.

Typical absurd "fish out of water" type scenario- this one's a reverse Beverly Hillbillies- but the writing is good and they give the characters some room to grow instead of just making them ridiculous out of touch rich people and/or taking cheap shots at poor people/small towns. Highly recommend for anyone in the market for a new sitcom.

watched "ant-man and the wasp" the other night with the family. Not on Netflix but whatever. i have to say that I've enjoyed these two films more than any of the other MCU films to date. maybe the first "Iron Man" is close but the others are way down the list for me. It's a great cast that works and the writing seems to fit what they're going for. it feels more like "The Incredibles" than Avengers in that it doesn't take itself so seriously. Pena and Douglas, in particular,  seem to be having a blast. i'm also delighted that Evangeline Lilly has found something after the "Lost" experience.

Finished up Hill House, and while I liked it, I did feel like it lost steam at the end for me. Agree with Flop that Ep6 is pretty damn good but to me after that it felt less and less like creepy show, and more like family drama with jump scares.  After a bit, since it was just focused mostly on the same stuff over and over, I lost a little interest.  Overall still good and I would recommend it to most, but not sure I would rush to watch S2 if they do another.  

I really need to get back on watching movies.  I am going to look through my lists that I saved and find something tonight.

Just started watching "Travelers " 

Still on Season 1, loving it

Season 3 coming out in a week and a half, i'm excited.  Not a perfect show but a good one, and season 2 episode 7 "17 minutes"might be the best sequence of any show in this genre, ever. Perfect story telling.

But seriously, feels like a big step down to me- mostly because Felix feels terribly miscast , and the writing feels too forced and implausible with narrow escapes phew! every episode. The older gangster ..Neto?...is fantastic though.

eta I’m about 3/4 through. And that’s  ####### delicious

I liked it but I agree the main bad guy seemed incredibly out of his element. Why did he always look scared?

Exactly. Fear and uncertainty always behind the eyes. Maybe that's how the guy actually is/was? But I seriously doubt it.

Interesting take on a Diego Luna.  I’ve not been a fan of his and thought he ruined Rogue One.  However, he won me over in this role strangely enough...but he’s no Pablo.

While this edition is still good, I don’t think it needed to be 10 episodes.

great point. 

here's a photo of gallardo... not sure how old he is here, but he looks like he could look young for his age. for me it's still what shady said- luna has played it (through 8 eps for me) as if gallardo was scared and uncertain all the time... which doesn't seem to jibe with a successful businessman, let alone cold-blooded cartel jeffe. again- maybe that was his outward appearance to people and luna's nailed it... but just seems unlikely.

the Final Table got mixed reviews. Put me on the thumbs up side. I like the focus on fine dining, and they bring out some great chefs for judging. It takes itself too seriously, of course, but the food presented looks immaculate.

I have.  On episode 9 now.  I think it is fantastic.  Can't stop watching.  

It is a historical fiction so a pretty different feel and execution from Game of Thrones, IMO.
