Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (8 Viewers)

Kingdom on Netflix is fantastic. Story about a fighting MMA family - can’t believe I have never seen this before.

The actor who plays Jay Kulina does a hell of a job.

Thanks for posting this.  I just finished watching Shameless and it will be a while before S11 is streaming.  Was trying to figure out what to watch next.

My neighbor recommended Kingdom to me, but I think I'm gonna do Cobra Kai first.
Holy smokes, Kingdom is such an amazing show.  Can't get enough of it.  Absolutely agree re: Jay Kulina character.

Binge watching the hell out of this show.  Don't give up after the first 1-2 episodes.  I remember thinking "I'm not sure if I like this or not".  So glad I stuck with it.

I enjoyed season 1 of The Last Kingdom on Netflix, enough to keep going.  I keep wondering why there aren't more archers in the battles.

This is without a doubt the best show on TV nobody knows about - really surprised no one else here has picked up on it. It is Vikings/Peaky Blinders level great.

MMA fights, drugs, sex - has it all. I binged watched 3 seasons in under a week.

And yes, Jay Kulina is the best character on TV. Not sure where this guy came form but he is fantastic.

Great great show.

Looking for some more recommendations on shows that are under 1 hour. Last time I asked, these were recommended...

  • Catastrophe - wife already watched it
  • Barry -
  • Atypical -
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt -   found her pretty annoying
  • Kominsky Method - just finished Barry and seemed too similar, so we skipped it
  • Eastbound and Down -  had its moments, but wife didnt care for it
  • Schitt's Creek - wife already watched it
What shows did you like that were under 1 hours?

Let's say I'm a guy who doesn't care for mma. At all. Are you still going to recommend it?

After Life

Veep

Santa Clarita Diet

Yes.

There are MMA fights - but the show deals with the family running a gym, relationships in the gym, setting up fights,  training, fighters personal lives, etc

It is really well done.

I've always thought Jonathan Tucker was a little underrated as an actor. he's got a great presence.

he was the lead in a show from 2007 called The Black Donnellys. it was canceled after one season, but it was a great show. it was probably ahead of it's time; if it were to come out now on one of the streaming services, it would have been a hit. I'm not sure if it's streaming anywhere, but if anyone hasn't seen it, I recommend it.

That was a really good show. Deserved another season at least.

I'm Sorry

Cardinal - Just found this the other day on Hulu. Anyone ever watch it? Its a Canadian show. 3 seasons - 6 episodes per season. I'm only 2 episodes in but I like it so far. I mean - its not going to break any new ground on television. But I'm just a sucker for a good cop show. A dedicated cop willing to sacrifice everything to find the real killer? I'm in.

I would say (2 episodes in) that its a poor man's Canadian Luther.

So Netflix and the guys who did GoT are now off to do The Three Body Problem.

So IN.

Next huge hit.

I just finished Kingdom and loved it....I’ve never been a MMA fan either.
Also agree about the Jay Kulina character.
I thought S3 was the weakest season of the show but the last 2 episodes were very very good....excellent series finale.

He was also good in City on the Hill. A Showtime series set in the 1990’s starring Kevin Bacon as a hard drinking coke snortin Boston cop. 😁

I'm finally going back to Dark, currently about 6 episodes into season 2.  What a great show.
I still have this in my backlog (season 3). I want to be able to watch with no distractions and with online school/sports still around I tend to work a little at night and this isn’t a show for background watching.

Made it through 2 episodes of Kobra Kai last night before turning it off - sappy cheesy dreck.

Doesn't compare to Kingdom. Not even close.

The second season of Miracle Workers was very funny. The first was good too but not as funny. You don't need to watch them in any order, they are completely different outside of the cast.

Being a Jersey guy that was in his late teens at the time, I had many adventurous days there . Such a crazy park
I grew up in NY, but was close enough so we went there a few times.  I loved the alpine slide and a lot of the other crazy "rides" they had, especially the ones that involved water.  Looking back, maybe my parents shouldn't have let us go there, but I never really got hurt there.  Just a few scrapes and bruises.

Episodes

hart of Dixie

the good place.

Just finished all 6.5 seasons of VIKINGS and really enjoyed it.
Back in April after COVID locked everything down, my wife and i hosted a couple of backyard get togethers with some of the neighbors where everyone would bring their own lawn chair, BYOB, and space it out for social distancing.  At the time, it was a good reason to regularly get out of our houses and talk about everything going on, and try to re-gain some normalcy.  Well, somewhere along the way, we started talking about "what shows are you watching/streaming?".  Eventually, somebody suggested that our group create a neighborhood "Movie club".   Like a book club, the 10 of us would decide what show we would all watch, how many episodes to watch, and when/where we would meet again to discuss those episodes in more detail.  (usually, it was on a back porch or pool enclosure where we could spread out)

The toughest decision was what to watch?........ as finding a show that nobody has seen became a challenge.  Since it was brand new at the time, we first chose to all watch UPLOAD (2 seasons).  Wasn't bad.....entertaining.    When we were done with that, we suggested to start watching VIKINGS as we had heard great things about it and since we are 5 couples, thought it would appeal to both the men and women.

Somewhere along the way, my wife and i became the group's discussion leaders........so we would watch the episodes at home & make notes of what happened, to whom, & any parts that could be discussed further.   Since the series is historical fiction and covers a lot of geographical ground  (Scandanavia, England, Iceland, Russia, France, Spain, & some Mediterranean areas)......we sometimes would Google the "real history" and go down rabbit holes and talk / compare vs the storyline.    By doing so, I actually found myself enjoying it and following along much better.

As a group, we still haven't fully decided on our next series to watch, but I have list of things and reading all of the responses in this thread has helped.
Mock me if you will, but it's been a nice thing to put on the calendar and look forward to during all of this uncertainty.

That’s a show I don’t see mentioned much in tv program threads here. I really liked it...maybe because I have a man crush on Matt Lablanc. He seems like a good dude that achieved some fame and handles the good parts of it and the bad parts of it well. I’d like to have a beer or a bourbon with him 😃

Go with The Last Kingdom next.. Mainly a view from the other side of view.

I thought it was pretty funny. I still

giggle about the scene where Matt is laughing at them fighting “that’s how you fight? We are all “f you/ no f you”!”

Cosmos - Liked, bordering on loved it

Astonishing for a movie that was made with zero budget, borrowed & found props, written/directed/edited by two brothers on their own, featuring first time movie actors working for free.

The drama gets just the slightest bit melodramatic and the action just the slightest eye rolling but really, this movie is fun. Starts with a slow burn but finishes with a crescendo.

This stuff is way better than about 99% of either the schlocky or bloated sci-fi fare out there.

This review sums it up very well.
