Streaming or currently airing TV shows (AKA Netflix thread) (34 Viewers)

Just binged Dropout (Hulu) with my wife over the weekend. It was good. Worth the watch. The acting by the main character was quite good as well as the plot.

wife and kids have been away the last few days, so I've binged some Netflix stuff.

Black Summer S2... it's well done in a lot of ways, and pretty terrible in some. the jump to "every other person on the planet is your enemy", just doesn't make much sense to me- and it's a repeated method of moving plot here (the son in the house who freaks out on everybody every second and destroys the radio... wtf? who would act like that?). but I like the snippet scenes and how they deal with chronology (starting episodes at the end or middle and working their way to it) and it definitely moves right along. worth the watch, especially for zombie people. TWD fans who moved on would probably enjoy this one.

Leaky Flounders S5... if I had a nickel for every theatrically lit slow motion single or group walk through shady corridors and streets.... well, it would be a lot of nickels. I was thinking if they cut every one of those scenes, there'd be hardly any show left. not done yet, but it looks and sounds good. say, that reminds me to put some money down on smoke machine futures.

is this the Hemsworth prison test treatment thing? just saw a preview for it... looked possibly interesting, possibly horrible.
Just watched this this morning.  It wasn't horrible.  Some predictability.  6\10
I watched it over the weekend. couldn't remember that I saw it, even though I came in here to post about seeing a movie a couple times.

a total waste of time? no. a waste of time? yes.

agree with whomever upthread said it would have been a better 45 min black mirror episode than a movie.

Find 3 hours where you can just enjoy the greatest EPIC flick of 2022 on Netflix:

RRR

Unbelievable action, choreography, mind blowing effects, fierce animals fighting, great simple story, twists, color, perfect music.

The fight scenes are reminiscent of Achilles vs Hector with the drums and intensity.

Tears in my eyes for the nailed ending.

If you enjoy EPIC battle scenes with tender moments and brilliant pacing just do it. It's a little over 3 hours and there is a mix of subtitles with English but I didn't even notice. Wife and I were both totally floored by this movie. WHAT AN EFFORT!
anybody else? I might take the plunge with some herbal assistance tonight.

Do it man. You seem to enjoy some of the flicks I do (Barfly for one) and I love artsy movies. I've never seen anything quite like it and watched half of it again today. We first watched it yesterday and can't stop talking about it. It has cracked my all-time top 10 for pure entertainment value and rewatchability, I saw more little details today and will watch the other half later tonite.

I started a thread at r/netflix and it is amazing the mixed reviews with some dissing and most like me drooling over ----- everything about it!

ok, first off... yeah... no.

at least it has the decency to let you know what it is in the first few minutes; so it's on me for continuing to watch that knowing what was coming.

there's a lot to discuss... but I don't have the time or energy- the movie sucked it all out of me. reminded me of really bad but epic chinese kung fu movies with smashing you in yer gob themes and lots of set pieces with millions of people running around plus informercial level CGI. come to think of it- yeah... it felt like watching a 3hr infomercial with lots of fighting. at least it was more homo-erotic than 300, although I kept waiting for those two to bang. I guess in the sequel.

Under the Banner of Heaven is almost culture shock for someone like me (unchurched lefty). Is anyone else watching and can attest to how accurately it portrays life in a small Mormon-dominated town?

Somehow I thought I'd read good things in this thread about this miniseries, and both Mr. krista and I had read the book years ago, so we watched this over the course of the last week or so.  I was glad to go back and see that no one actually said this was good, because it was laughably bad.  Started off strong, actually, and we were pulled in for the first few episodes, but by the last couple, and especially the final episode, we literally laughed out loud through most of it.  Anyone considering this should make it a hard pass.

Unrelated to its merit, but throughout the show I kept being distracted by Gil Birmingham, who played the Native American lead detective and I would have sworn was just Chris Cooper with makeup on.

Welcome to Floppo Island, population of 1
Lol...ok. I'm sure I'm not alone, regardless of RT.

I'd say for people in here to see it just to prove me wrong, but I wouldnt will that on all of you good folk.

It's obviously stylized and heavily themed in bolly/Tollywood traditions and meant to be silly in an epic way. I'm sure that will appeal to some folk.

What are we talking about?

I am 3 episodes in and I've thought it has been ok so far.

Should I quit while I'm ahead?

RRR

everybody loves it, Floppo doesn't
I asked in the movie thread....universally loved there too.

It kinda reminds me of the response to Pacific Rim...silly movie that everybody here seemed to love (except me). I guess I  underestimate the need for silly fluff.

Floppo is not alone on that RRR island.

The challenge I have with RRR is the whiplashing tone changes between silly and serious. Each have their own (several) moments of fun, but they don't quite mesh as a whole.

Just finished S2 of Russian Doll. It's weird and interesting. Didn't love it as much as S1, and Natasha Lyonne's character's affect gets grating after awhile (or maybe that's just Natasha Lyonne?) But it was still entertaining, and with only seven half-hour episodes you can knock it out pretty quickly.

Next up on my list is We Own this City. Watched the first episode the other night, and ... meh. I was a huge Wire fan, and Bernthal is great, but it didn't really suck me in. I'll give it a couple more episodes, though. It's not like The Wire sucked me right in, either.

Oh, and the wife and I watched the first couple episodes of Loot on AppleTV+. Maya Rudolph is a gosh darn national treasure, and I like the guy who plays her assistant, too. But the show is peak Cringe TV. Just scene after scene where you know she's going to do something super awkward and then she does

Question for the people praising RRR so much:  do you watch a lot of international movies?

I was just curious when things like Squid Game and RRR have seemed wildly popular if these types of movies are fresh to people and that drives the enjoyment, or if they watch a lot and think they are every bit as good as say The Raid: Redemption, or any number of messed up Asian horror/dystopian movies that Squid Game would be similar to.

And I am on @El Floppo island.   After a little chatter in the movie thread yesterday I made an attempt last night, and not sure I even made it 1/3 of the way through.   I got to a scene with dudes slo-mo CGI swinging off a bridge with a flag or some dumb #### and had to tap out.

Never thought I would somewhat enjoy an Indian superhero/kung-fu musical movie?

Definitely different from anything I've ever seen before.

Not really. My wife mentioned she had heard about RRR from her fav movie critic Darren Van Dam so we gave it a try.

We both laughed at the cheese, reveled in the action, were blown away by the dance off which rivaled anything in West Side Story and were just thoroughly entertained. It is a spectacle like no other- at least until last night when we watched 2 more by the same director, Baahubali 1 and 2 which were similar to RRR but I liked RRR better.

Next up is another by the same director, S.S. Rajamouli- "Eega" which is about a guy who is murdered and then reincarnated as a fly who seeks revenge on the man who killed his former human self. Really!

I posted the same small review that I originally posted above here on r/netflix and it has gone viral with over 67K views, 22 shares and a 79% uprate vote. There is a fierce debate over which of these Bollywood flicks is the best and they have informed me that there is an extreme wealth of Indian flicks on Netflix and while RRR is critically soaring above the rest (92/94 RT) they insist there is even better.

Previously the only other Indian movies I can recall seeing is Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi (even though it's an Ang Lee). A whole new genre to explore out there!

The first Russian Doll series is top-5 for me.  And when we watched it again to prep for S2 it held up.  S1 is just about perfect television IMO.

S2 is a great concept miniseries, but muddy and convoluted as hell in execution.  I prefer stuff that goes for it and misses to cookie cutter productions, but this was just too much.

Very disappointing and complicates my ranking of the franchise now.  A little bit like GOT, where the first four seasons are probably my favorite TV of all time and then... they ran out of GRRM's rich source material.

I never watched GoT, but I mostly get where you're coming from on the RD stuff. Maybe it's because I used to live in Budapest and really enjoyed that mid-season diversion, but it didn't leave as bad a taste in my mouth. But I do agree it was overly convoluted. Also didn't help that

[VAGUE SPOILER AHEAD]

the finale ended on such a bummer, especially after the uplifting message at the end of S1

Like I said, I the other thread as much as I couldn't take RRR, I am glad it's getting people used to international movies.

A few of us pimp them, like the one I mentioned above- The Raid: Redemption.  I think it's on HBO Max.   Also bonkers, non-stop action, but way less cheese and cgi.  I am not overly familiar with this style of Bollywood/Tollywood flicks, so maybe these cheese is part of the formula overall.

My wife and I finished this last night. It was a slog to get through. Honestly the only reason we finished it was because it was “only” 6 episodes.

That's helpful to hear. I was going to watch the second episode last night but kept putting it off because I wasn't particularly excited at the prospect. Part of it may be that I already know the basic outlines of the story, so what exactly am I going to get out of watching it?

I’m usually a completionist about watching shows, but I stopped after a couple of episodes of season 2 and have no regrets.

Might have to check this out.

I think I might have posted about this before, but there's another epic Indian movie on Netflix. Not sure how it compares but thought I'd mention it

Baahubali

There's a second part as well.

I think we might be talking about two different shows. I bolded the show I’m talking about (We Own This City)in ignatiusjreilly’s post, but I realize it doesn’t show up unless you click on Expand in my post. I think you are referring to Russian Doll.

I don't think many here liked it, but I'm glad The Orville found a home for a new season on Hulu. Hope they can find an audience to keep it going.
