New Competitive Reality Show Alert: The US version of "The Traitors" comes to Peacock on 1/12.

If you're a fan of social deduction games, like Among Us, this is basically The Mole crossed with good ol' Werewolf. 20 players work together to build a prize fund by completing challenges. At the end of the season, the players win the accumulated money. However, among the group are three "Traitors", who eliminate one player (among "The Faithful", aka 'the village') each night. The remaining players all meet to also vote out one player from their group each day, hoping to eliminate a traitor in doing so. If they can, and no traitors remain at the end of the season, the remaining Faithful players split the prize. However, if any Traitors survive to the end, they win all the money for themselves.

I've been watching the British version, which came out last month and became one of the higher-rated shows on the BBC last year. I believe there are also Australian and Dutch versions floating around out there.

What I've seen of the British version is OK, completely over the top with theming, and the music is totally out of pocket. The show doesn't really make clear the role of the Traitors in the normal daylight competitive-task portion of the show, as this isn't like the Mole where sabotage is a goal. Instead, what's not really said is that the players are using the tasks as team-building trust exercises which can give them a better read on their fellow competitors.

Haven't seen the US version, but the trailer just dropped today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3rqVPKOKfQ. It appears the US version uses the same locations, sets, tasks and challenges as the UK version. Just a different host. In the UK version, you learn who the Traitors are at the start, it's not kept secret from the audience. Assuming the same in the US version.

Among the cast are a variety of names familiar to US reality TV viewers:

• Arie Luyendyk Jr. (Bachelor/Bachelorette)
• Brandi Glanville (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills)
• Cirie Fields (Survivor)
• Cody Calafiore (Big Brother)
• Kate Chastain (Below Deck)
• Kyle Cooke (Summer House)
• Rachel Reilly (Big Brother)
• Reza Farahan (Shahs of Sunset)
• Ryan Lochte (Olympian)
• Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick (Survivor)
I binged both seasons of the US version and loved them. The description above is pretty accurate. The endgames of both seasons were fascinating. It's clear that there are really two different games going on during the process, and some contestants have figured this out while others haven't (or don't want to).

Really enjoyed Ripley. Beautifully shot with an intricate storyline. I'm a big fan of Caravaggio and loved how they drew parallels to both of their stories. The main actor, Andrew Scott has a really interesting acting style. He was really good in Fleabag and excellent in this one. I'll admit that I was a little confused with using a trans actor for that other particular role. I kept waiting for it to be part of the storyline but they never did.
I'm not sure if it's for everyone because of the slow pace but definitely recommend it to fans of Film Noir.

Watched "Air" on Prime. It's about Nike. M. Damon, B. Affleck, J. Bateman. Very good, highly recommend. Was trying for some mindless filler while making brunch yesterday & came up with this one. Surprised the heck out of me that it was really good.
Well produced and decently acted...Movie really showed how poorly Affleck has developed as an actor and how much better Damon has become.
The concept is dumb as rocks to me and the wife though. But yeah, we watched it.

The concept is dumb as rocks to me and the wife though.
What concept? The story of how Nike signed Jordan?
Yup
Not sure how it was dumb. It is what it was. Put in all eggs for one guy and it worked. How is that dumb? Risky? - sure, but not dumb.
So.....you're saying you don't agree? That's cool. I thought it was a dumb concept. Glad you liked it though
"Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh? Oh, it looks good on you though."

More saying it seems like an odd comment. Neither right or wrong....just odd.

Well if you feel my opinion is odd.....that's fine. Not sure why you'd think so. Just cause it doesn't align with yours? I didn't call your opinion odd right?

Yeah not trying to pile on, you could not have liked the movie which is fine but what did you think the concept was going to be about when they dramatize what actually happened? The concept is the entire movie
Agreed..And I felt it was a dumb concept. That's all. I wasn't surprised by the concept. Not like I went in there thinking it would be something it wasn't. We go to a lot of movies, some we like, some we don't. We thought this concept was dumb. But it was a movie, and we like movies.

Well if you feel my opinion is odd.....that's fine. Not sure why you'd think so. Just cause it doesn't align with yours? I didn't call your opinion odd right?
We're just not sure what you thought was "dumb as rocks". Was it that they decided to make a movie about Nike signing Jordan at all?

Yeah...Man..I'm struggling to understand what the issue is here. We thought it was a dumb concept to make a movie about. Do you guys have Nike stock or something? Why is this turning into a battle?

It's one of the greatest, most impactful events in the history of marketing.

Do you normally watch documentaries? Are there ones you enjoy and think were definitely worthy of the attention?

Dude...We are not doing this. How about you accept I found it dumb and move on? As I have done with your opinion of the movie. You liked it, great. I support that 100%, I'm not trying to change your mind on it. I promise.

I didn't even see it. I'm just curious as to why you watched a movie knowing full well what it would be about and thinking it's stupid going into it.

Nobody's picking on you. It's just an atypical perspective.

It has nothing to do with aligning with my opinion or not. It's the phrasing that is odd to me....not your opinion. It's not personal at all. Seems like an odd word to use to describe a true life story depicted in a movie when that was what the entire movie was marketed as. That is all. Nothing more...nothing less. Just an odd phrasing to me (and I appear to not be alone with that misunderstanding)

I keep a list of shows I need to watch/finish/rewatch. Every time I hear about a show, I throw it on here and just choose from the list whenever I need something new.

Currently going through Ozark and have no idea what's next. I tend to prefer watching shows that have concluded, but I make exceptions.

I've got too many shows to watch.

Rings of Power
The Bear
Yellowjackets
Servant
Severance
Mad Men
X Files rewatch
Dexter
Shameless
Rectify
What We Do in the Shadows
Broadchurch

The Returned (French)

Black Summer
Slow Horses
Reservoir Dogs
Evil
Deadwood
You've already seen Mr In-between?

A lot of great shows on that list for you already... But don't sleep on that one.
Yeah watched that one and most other great shows.

Dexter, Mad Men, and Deadwood are probably the biggest shows on the list.

I gave both Mad Men and Dexter a shot a while back and they didn’t stick. Need to try again.

Deadwood was always off my radar because I hate watching shows that were cancelled without resolution. Then I heard they made a movie resolving plot stuff so it’s on the list now.
When mad men came out we watched it. Now, it just doesn't seem to hold up. Not really sure why.
Really liked it when it was new however. Wife keeps telling me to watch your Honor. So I might make that next

I'll try to steelman this one a little because I feel like I kind of sympathize a bit with the guy who didn't like Air. To be fair, I haven't seen Air, and I'm not going to. But I've seen both Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, and I thought both were underwhelming because they go on and on and on, and there's absolutely no suspense or character development of any kind. You know every single thing that is going to happen in each film before you sit down for your 3+ hour historical slog-fest.

Sorry, I know that as a Gen Xer who looks back on the cold war with nostalgia, I'm supposed to like Oppenheimer. I just think movies that depict actual historical events and people are going to be very limited in their ability to compete with fiction.

I haven't seen Flower Moon yet. Want to though. I wonder if it is like the Irishman. In the sense that the first time I saw it I didn't like it that much, but when I watched it a second time, I liked it a lot. Joe Pesci was awesome in it.

The execution might not have been to your liking but you can see why they'd make a movie about it.

Anyway, I didn't mean to put @supermike80 on the defensive. I was just curious.

It's a pretty film. Scorsese knows how to frame a shot, obviously.

A lot of my criticisms of KOTFM are the same as my criticisms of The Irishman, so if you like that movie, maybe you like this one more than I did. I think there's a pretty good 90-120 minute movie in there someplace. But Scorsese isn't going to edit himself, and apparently streaming services don't have the muscle to impose an editor on him. KOTFM had several subplots that went absolutely nowhere and could have been easily cut, and that would have made the movie more watchable. As it is, there is nowhere near enough story here to justify a 3 1/2 hour runtime. I spent huge swaths of the film just observing the background scenery and wondering how it accurately it depicts early-20th century Oklahoma.

Ugh...3.5 hours is really long.

I think the reason people are piling on supermike80 for saying that he didn't like the concept when its not really a "concept" It's a dramatized doccy of a real life event. It's one thing to say well "I didn't like that they made a movie about the rise of Nike" but concept is the wrong word.
I wasn't trying to pile on anything. I was just looking for clarification because the phrasing was odd. You have described exactly my initial question much better than I did. "concept" was the stumbling point for me.

i'm feeling the exact opposite of late

fiction stories are "good guy wins, bad guy loses, lots of car crashes" by and large or "nerd wins over the hot girl". feels like there are very, very few twists on the age old storylines that are remotely interesting anymore.

documentaries/historical narratives are what they are. sometimes the good guy steps on a landmine and we wind up with 300 years of dictatorship or something. for people who know the history it's maybe not so compelling to watch a movie re-make of the accounting but i still find it more compelling than Sylvester Stallone in makeup to look 35, kung fu fighting 33 guys before jumping from a building in to the cockpit of a speeding jet to save America.

I have an archeology degree and a minor in history. I go historical doc over anything.

FWIW I like documentaries just fine. It's the "historical narrative" genre that I dislike.

I didn't even see it. I'm just curious as to why you watched a movie knowing full well what it would be about and thinking it's stupid going into it.

Nobody's picking on you. It's just an atypical perspective.

I just think movies that depict actual historical events and people are going to be very limited in their ability to compete with fiction.
i'm feeling the exact opposite of late

fiction stories are "good guy wins, bad guy loses, lots of car crashes" by and large or "nerd wins over the hot girl". feels like there are very, very few twists on the age old storylines that are remotely interesting anymore.

documentaries/historical narratives are what they are. sometimes the good guy steps on a landmine and we wind up with 300 years of dictatorship or something. for people who know the history it's maybe not so compelling to watch a movie re-make of the accounting but i still find it more compelling than Sylvester Stallone in makeup to look 35, kung fu fighting 33 guys before jumping from a building in to the cockpit of a speeding jet to save America.
I have an archeology degree and a minor in history. I go historical doc over anything.
FWIW I like documentaries just fine. It's the "historical narrative" genre that I dislike.
We all have different tastes. But can we agree that the "music biopic" genre is completely played out and should be retired?

Well if you feel my opinion is odd.....that's fine. Not sure why you'd think so. Just cause it doesn't align with yours? I didn't call your opinion odd right?
We're just not sure what you thought was "dumb as rocks". Was it that they decided to make a movie about Nike signing Jordan at all?
Yeah...Man..I'm struggling to understand what the issue is here. We thought it was a dumb concept to make a movie about. Do you guys have Nike stock or something? Why is this turning into a battle?
It's one of the greatest, most impactful events in the history of marketing.

But then you wouldn't get the Amy Winehouse movie you didn't know you needed!

100% agree. Especially when they sanitize the story to make it more palatable to the public.

A few episodes into The Offer, about the making of The Godfather. I'm liking it well enough but some of the acting is really cheesy, especially the studio execs. I generally like Giovanni Ribisi but think he's miscast here. When he's sitting around with the other mob bosses, he looks so out of place among the other actors. Still worth watching though and I'm looking forward to more. I like the comedy team of Puzo and Coppala.

Scavengers Reign was excellent. On Max and now NF. I can't think of too many shows that had as many wtf moments as this show. Looking forward to another season. Really well done animated sci-fi.

I have started Deadwood. Two episodes in and it’s not grabbing me. Obviously a period piece western, but it still seems “dated.” I assume it gets better as I know it’s highly recommended?

I finished season 4 of For All Mankind. I liked season 4. Season 3 wasn’t the best, but I am looking forward to season 5.

Started (and finished) watching Utopia the last few week.

Kept feeling familiar and I honestly was questioning my mental state because despite it seeming familiar, also felt like I hadn't seen it. That's because I had watched the US version before, and this was the UK version.

Either version is worth watching.

I just started Season 2 and am kind of in the same boat. I will probably continue but it has been a few weeks since I watched it as it isn't too interesting to me.

I don't typically mind coarse language, but they're throwing the F-bomb around pretty egregiously. It's practically a comma. Takes me out of the show.

I think the bolded and "c----sucker" make up about 1/4 of the dialogue.

I didn’t know this took place in Massachusetts…
