The rules have been the same over the last 5 years in this league. There is clearly some frown upons on the rule of not having to draft a position (although you have to have it when the season starts). It feels uncomfortable doing something that others feel is unfair even though it's always been within the rules.

I just looked at what kind of band they are, and there are several descriptions, and one of them is "math rock." I then had to look up math rock. I have seen you talk about Steve Albini before.

Not doing that, but we have to maintain a legal roster at all times. One K and one D are sufficient.

I've seen Arkells more than any other band, at least 11 times, so I need to get them on this playlist. Lots of connections here, Arkells are probably Bills fans, they're from Hamilton which is pretty damn close to Buffalo. Plus I've seen them play in Buffalo at Town Ballroom (they play stadiums here now, so sometimes it's nice to see them in a small club). Plus this lyric is probably about his kicking skills.

Party raged on, you could only hear the Bass thump.

I'm going to tell the story now because I believe it happened 20 years ago today, August 31, 2002, which the internet tells me was a Saturday.

As I said, the Source Tags and Codes album blew me away and I listened to it a squillion times in 2002. I was not keeping track of their touring schedule and did not know they were opening for Queens of the Stone Age.

In the late afternoon, I was on my computer and had AOL instant messenger (remember that?) open. All of the sudden a message from a friend pretty well connected with the music promoters in Philly appeared: "Trail of Dead at the Khyber! Tonight!"

"WHAT?" I responded. The Khyber Pass Pub was the closest thing Philly had to CBGB. It could hold maybe 200 people if they were really packed in.

Not knowing how quickly the venue would fill up, I took off from Central NJ for Philly almost immediately. When I got there, my friend told me that the QOTSA/TOD tour was supposed to play in Philly that night, but the show was postponed because someone from QOTSA had a family emergency and had to leave for home. Being stuck in Philly with nothing to do, TOD called the Khyber and said "We'll play your place tonight for $500 and a bottle of Jack Daniels." The offer was immediately accepted.

The set they played was absolutely monstrous, and presumably much longer than their opening sets for QOTSA. I suppose there is a special kind of energy when a band who has spent months playing for another band's fans gets to let loose in front of their own. The opening 6 songs were from Source Tags, but the rest of the set was entirely stuff from their rawer, punkier first two albums. At one point, bassist Neil Bush raised his arms and instrument high in a fit of exuberance -- and punctured a panel from the very low ceiling. Band and crowd were in an absolute frenzy throughout the regular set.

After the regular set was done, the band left the stage and the crowd bellowed for an encore. After a few minutes, three of the members returned to the stage, but co-frontman Conrad Keely was nowhere to be found. Finally co-frontman Jason Reece took the mic and bellowed: "Hey Conrad, stop shooting up in the bathroom and get your *** back to the stage!"

Keely finally returned and the band played a blistering encore, at the end of which Keely smashed the now-empty bottle of Jack Daniels on the floor.

As I was leaving, I passed their merch table, which Bush was manning. I told him Source Tags was the best album I'd heard in years.
 
Same happened in DC (9:30 club) where TOD filled the night with a headlining set and basically everybody got to come back to the rescheduled Queens date for free. I don’t remember those kind of deets but I know I fell in love with the band until, well, their next album and I knew it was time to hedge the bets but.. I love their 2nd and 3rd, and their garagey yet wholly professional and entertaining set was a total slam fest

In 2002, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead played a last-minute gig at The Khyber when their Electric Factory appearance with Queens of the Stone Age was cancelled. They wreaked havoc on the room, using their guitars to bust out the drop ceiling above the stage and knock the smashed tiles into the front row.

Worlds Apart was a real divisive record. When I saw them on tour for that, a guy standing near me vocally complained every time they played a song from it.

I love the idea of that record -- prog/post-hardcore fusion -- but the execution was often lacking.

I presume the sessions were difficult, as Neil Bush left during them and is credited as a guest on the record.

She is a petite pug so I don’t think it’s bloat. We just got a call from the vet. They think she was in anaphylactic shock as she developed a typical allergic rash. They gave her steroids, antihistamines and IV fluids and she has improved considerably this morning.

ECU and NC State play each other Saturday on ESPN at noon. I pull for both of those programs, but I am an ECU alumni, so I want them to win. The rest of my family went to NC State. ECU used to be great in football, but they have struggled since firing Ruffin McNeil several years ago. State is ranked #13 and ECU isn't ranked (they're #1 in my rankings). I hope the Pirates win or at least put up a big fight. I want the Pirates to rip the Wolfpack to shreds! :pirate: @The Dreaded Marco Don't you have a Dr friend that went to ECU?

He went to Penn State, which is in Central PA.

It would be easy enough to pick something from a Philly artist, but the Philly area and Central PA have almost nothing in common culturally.

So I will go with an act from York, which is in Central PA, albeit about 2 hours south of State College.
