Summerpalooza V -- Playoffs Over -- Eephus Is Now Two-Time Summerpalooza Champion (1 Viewer)

Back to the football talk. I lost by a passing yard.

One passing yard, folks. That's as close, I think, as you can cut a decimal in this game.

****, dkp, got any chunks of diamond sitting around?

I'm on a cruise ship with @Wrighteous Ray . Save your judgment for the five-dorks thread. Anyway, there was a Beatles thingie tonight that I thought was going to be a dance party, but it started with with trivia before that. They would play a snippet of a song, and you had to run up to the microphone and name it.

I'd love to say I was too cool for this.

First song, so easy! With a Little Help from My Friends

[Yes I ran up and got it.]

Second: And Your Bird Can Sing

[Nailed it, obv]

Third: Come Together

[After this I asked, should I just sit out? Lady in charge says no.]

Fourth:

I'm Happy Just to Dance with You

[lady in charge dramatically moves the microphone on the other side of the hall. Funnily, jovially, but...]

Fifth:

They said they'd do a difficult one, and they did. After it started, I ran up as usual, but then panicked and said "sorry" into the mic. They kept it going a couple of seconds and then I got it together...
"I'll Cry Instead"

They decided to do a "bonus round" since I was 5-0.

Bonus: I ran up to the mic and made it there before a dude who had tried to weigh in a couple of songs before. He physically SHOVED ME away from the mic. :lmao: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I high-fived and hugged him for getting it, though we all knew it was mine.

Later, the shoving dude, whom I'd danced with in the afterparty along with his really lovely wife, came up to say that he'd been a DJ all his life and was so happy to have "competition." Turns out they live in Bend, OR, and he gave me his card and said we could come stay at his property any time for free.

no, but I just went out and bought a lotto ticket. Lol

WHOA. That's weird. I was trying to enhance my ship cred by telling this guy about the new box set just tonight.

No, I really did. :bag:

Cool. I was trying to enhance my Beatles cred by mentioning it to you. :)

Nah, I was just wondering if you'd heard of it. Figured you might want to know in case you already hadn't heard (which is sort of dumb, I know, but just in case).

And your bird can sing...

Great, that's in my head now.

You know I have the cure for that.

I think I know what it is and I know I'm not clicking.

I had a semi-rational fear that you were going to pump that song into the stadium this week just to make sure my team was distracted, but now you've already gone to the well. I'm still convinced there will be some chicanery, but I'm just not sure what form it'll take.

Enough of this football talk. Let's get to what's most important -- dogs.

What did they say about Loki, @Dr. Octopus. Wasn't he going Monday to the vet?
His x-rays showed no fluid in the lungs and heart tests showed no significant worsening of his condition (enlarged right side of his heart). They prescribed antibiotics in case it’s just “kennel cough” or a virus - but it’s possible (and perhaps more likely) that this is just a progression and he’ll just have to live with the coughing - doctor says once that happens with his condition it doesn’t get better. We have a coedine prescription to suppress the cough. I’m not sure how that will work over time though.

So basically not really sure yet, but I’m out $1,235, which is nice.

Did not think I was going to win this week. I stopped even checking yesterday afternoon since I assumed I was such a dog. The narrowest of wins!

Radio? Private? Gonna need a name here.

The song will be pumping through Himalayan Stadium early and often, because I know how much you love the song. And guess what?!?! Our coordinator has connected with yours, and you and your team will be staying at the Persian Palace. Again, we want nothing but the best for you, so we will have this song softly playing on a loop 24/7 throughout the hotel, including the bedrooms. (y)There's more...We respect how conscientious you are about safety during Covid, so in your honor, Starrkeisha has been working on a special routine with her Katette Dancers!!

I just got a call from the vet that Cole's ashes are back. It's going to be tough going there today, but I have to do it. I saw earlier that Loretta Lynn died. I grew up listening to her. My parents and both sets of grandparents played her often. My grandmother, Maw Maw, had the VHS of Cole Miner's Daughter, and she watched it all the time. Loretta was super talented, and to say she was a trailblazer seems to understate her importance and influence in country music, because it was so huge. Much respect. RIP Loretta

I have good memories of picking up Bosley's ashes a couple of weeks before everything shut down in 2020. I was kind of dreading it too beforehand but we spent a half hour walking around the pet cemetery looking at the monuments and feeling the love that people have for their pets.

I'm not a particularly sentimental person (although I am more than I used to be) but I'm glad @ditkaburgers insisted on getting Boz cremated. She keeps his ashes on the mantle and I usually go over and pat his box when I'm down in her apartment.

And Jane came by with a lock of your hair

Again, we want nothing but the best for you, so we will have this song

I have a report back from the hotel. We arrived early on Tuesday (today). I was prepared to wait, but apparently you had contacted the Persian Palace about an early check-in. The players and I are extraordinarily grateful. Nobody wants to wait in hotel lobbies, though the splendor of the Persian Palace was immediately noticed and would have been a wonderful place to spend an hour or three. Some of the players retired to their rooms, others went to the cafe for a bite to eat and something to drink. I have indeed noticed the Leonard Cohen song playing in the background. My players, used to more of the music that Starrkeisha likes, are sort of wondering what's going on. "Why is this guy moaning on a loop?" one had the temerity to ask.

"Silence," I told him. He looked appalled. "No, not you be silent but his use of silence as a backdrop against the acoustic. Think about it. Akers of Hurts's coach would have all sorts of strings and things busying up the background. This is purity. This is raw emotion and unfettered longing. I want you to capture this weekend when you have to lockdown Josh Reynolds."

Then I retired to the room to think about it all. What had happened over the past week was tough on the players and coach alike. .04. .04 still admittedly rings in my head from last night's finish. We travelled early to get rid of the stink, but I still remember.

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
Darrell Henderson, and dkp993
One more thin gypsy thief

Anyway, enough of the emoting. We'll see you this Sunday. Thank you for the accommodations. The annual simey/rockaction bowl will be a doozy, even if I fear our team hasn't got much to play for this year.

Best,

rock

You're welcome on the accomadations, and the restaurant will be serving grits for breakfast, liver mush for lunch, and chitterlings for dinner.

This weekend we will be serving up some Toney Island Baby BBQ...after we BBQ your ***. :football: Game On!

Cassidy is at his Internal Medicine appointment. They said his white blood cell count is severely high. Since he doesn’t have any obvious symptoms, the most likely explanation is a blood or other cancer that is not yet symptomatic. He is getting an ultrasound and an aspiration of the liver and spleen. In a few days we will know if we have a cancer diagnosis or need to do other tests.

Today’s procedures will set me back about as much as Doc Oc at his vet.

So we still have to wait for results but they did have some information for us after Cassidy’s procedure. They found on ultrasound a mass in his intestines. There are 3 leading thoughts on what that could be two of which are types of cancer that are common in cats (lymphoma and mast cell) and one of which is an inflammatory tumor that could surgically be removed with a potentially positive prognosis thereafter, but it’s a rare condition in cats. They took three aspirations of it and the lymph nodes around it and skipped the liver and spleen aspiration because of finding the intestinal mass. They also took blood to be looked at by the pathologist.

I hope for the best outcome out of all of those leading thoughts.

Last Tuesday the vet mentioned lymphoma with Cole. Back at the beginning of 2021 when he went on the hunger strike and got so sick for several months, the specialist felt he had either low grade lymphoma or irritable bowel disease. To know 100% she would have to do an endoscopy and biopsy, but she wanted to see if he would respond to a specific food and B12 shots first to see if it was IBD. She also did another ultrasound to see if anything had changed from the one three months prior. The ultrasound came back good again, and he responded great to the shots and food. He gained all of his weight back, and the specialist said he had had IBD. He was back to himself for over a year, and then boom. I can't help but wonder if back when he was originally sick, if maybe he had some lymphoma cells in his gut, and it was at the stage where nothing showed up on an ultrasound, and the special food he was on and responded great to just masked the original symptoms. That may not be the case, but it crossed my mind. I just gotta let it go.

Well wishes to Cassidy. I don't know Cole's exact age, but the vet believed when he joined my family that he was probably 2, which means he would have been evil number 9 when he died.

My bestest kitty friend ever, Camille, had a mast cell tumor in her spleen. simey knows this story, but after Camille got it removed, I was told that no kitty had lived more than xx time thereafter, but Camille lived for more than 2x that time period! Sending all the best to Cassidy to be another superstar exception.

Actually awesome story. Would be fun to face off against you.

Where is your cruise ship cruising to? How's the food?

We left out of LA and are just going down the coast of Mexico. Yesterday was Puerto Vallarta, and today is Cabo San Lucas. Didn't really care where we were going, but just needed to get away, and it was a nice easy flight to LA.

The food is amazing. We ate at the French restaurant on board the first night, and my Mom said it was one of the best meals she's ever had. It was spectacular. Last night we ate at the sushi place, which was also fantastic. We haven't had less than great meal. And every night I get drunken pizza (to be clear, I'm drunk, not the pizza).

Last night in cruise-ship kismet, we had gone to a trivia contest. You can form a team of up to six people, but we just did the two of us, and we had a guy two barstools down on my mom's left and another guy two down on my right who just did it individually. We should have formed a team! Each of our small teams lost by one point to a team of five. Anyway, after it was done I noticed the guy on the left had what looked to be a copy of Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking," so I asked if that's what it was, and he said yes. Now the next question, if I'd been sober, I might have been smart enough not to ask, but I said, "Have you suffered a loss?" And he had lost his wife in June (57 years old, cancer) and his mom last year. So we talked a little about loss and I was able to recommend to him a couple of books that always seem to help people (one of them I've recommended here with good results before - Meghan O'Rourke's "The Long Goodbye"), which he seemed really appreciate of and interested in. Anyway, it was a nice, unexpected chance to help someone, I hope.

It sounds like fun. I'd like to go on a cruise some day, but I worry about getting seasick. I know the motion is not as intense as other boats, but it would suck if I got motion sickness, and be stuck on the boat for days. Have you felt any queasiness?

My parents used to travel a lot, and two of my mom's favorite trips were cruises, and she raved about the food on both ships.

I bet the guy appreciated the chat and recommendation.

My wife is prone to queasiness but we do Disney cruises somewhat regularly. We always get a cabin near the center of the ship. Less effects felt there than in the front or back.

Apologies in advance for the random drop in to a thread I didn't realize existed until today, having seen some familiar names I clicked on the thread title. I just wanted to send condolences and support to those dealing with illnesses or passing of family pets. Dealing with the loss of a pet is among the toughest things to go through. Some of the worst days of my life were those where we had to say goodbye to ones we loved. They really are family members. Much love to the pets that have brought happiness and joy to those humans lucky enough to have had them, past and present.

Enjoy the FF league and the trips, it seems like fun.
