Super Bowl LVI - Bengals vs Rams - Discussion & GAME Thread (2 Viewers)

I love the fact that everyone is counting the Bengals out. A theme this entire season. Bengals have overcome and proved they belong but continue to not get the respect.

Here are my thoughts on the game (as a Bengals fan):

Rams D-line is great, however, they are not good against the run, Mixon and company can take advantage of that. Aaron Donald usually lines up inside as a DT and Von Miller lines up normally against the LT. These are the Bengals strengths on the O-line, which helps. It will likely be Floyd against Prince on the RT that has me worried. But the O-line was solid against KC.

Rams O-Line, solid, but the Bengals pass rush has been underrated all year. I am not scared of this matchup. Hendrickson, Hubbard, Reader and Hill have been great this year.

Chase v Ramsey, Personally I am not scared of Ramsey at all. I think he is not the same shut down corner he once was, he is getting beat routinely this year. I love his size, but he seems to have lost a step. Mike Evans made him look like JAG. I think the Bengals will line up Chase in the backfield like they did against KC to switch things up. I am confident in Boyd and Higgins to take advantage if they did double team Chase.

Stafford v Burrow. Stafford is solid but always makes an errant throw (kind of like Favre). Burrow is Joe Brrrr for a reason. Ice in his veins, not scared of anything. As long as the Bengals can catch the interception ball that Stafford throws, Ill take it.

Kupp v Awuzie: Kupp is a stud route runner and he is so fun to watch. I am nervous of this matchup, but look at what Kupp has done against every team this year. We have to limit him as best as we can. Awuzie has been a stud this year and one of the best FA signings. I just hope Awuzie is matched up on him and it isnt Apple or Hilton. Ill take my chances with OBJ v Hilton.

Higbee v Uzomah: Both have MCL sprains from the sound of it, both are questionable to play. I think both could play a big part in the game if healthy.

I think this game is going to come down to the mistakes. I will take Burrow and Mixon over Stafford and Cam Akers in this regard.

Bengals 34 Rams 28.

'Home team' in the Super Bowl means exactly nothing IMO
I could argue that if you are the actual home team (like the Rams are) the visitor designation is actually an advantage.  You get to call the flips (particularly important in the OT).

Regular season and playoffs

Bengals vs AFC playoff teams were 7-0.  Bengals against NFC playoff teams were 0-2

Rams against NFC playoff teams were 5-4.  Rams against AFC playoff teams were 0-1

This means nothing, but I thought it was interesting.

Of course statistically. But I think most people would rather be the one choosing than not.
Of course....and when they do they are still 50/50 to get it right or wrong...  so there is noreal advantage.  When I get into a position  where I make a call because I believe most people call heads..... while that seems like some sort of advantage in my warped headi ts still 50% and no amount of superstition is going to change that.

I wouldnt say it means nothing....  the Bengals did SUBSTANTIALLY  better against playoff teams than the Rams did....  of course they still have to play the game....  7-2  vs 5-5   isnt  an inconsequential stat.

It also means the Bengals lost 5 games to non playoff teams while the Rams lost none. So I'm not sure what to make of it.

The Bengals losing to the Jets was one of the most random results in recent years. (And it knocked me and many others out of survivor pools.)

The Bengals also lost twice to the Browns.  Isn't there some secret hidden bylaw that says a team cannot win the Super Bowl if they lost three games to the Jets and Browns? :P

Bengals 34 Rams 28.
Just to pick at your pretty glaring flaws.

1. Rams just shut down the 49ers run game so to say they cant stop the run is bananas. Shows you are just looking through rose tinted glasses.

2. Rams O-line has been a top 5 unit while Bengal's d-line hasn't been in top 10. Also good luck trying to rush 3 people and not getting run on. Rams running game is still there just faced 2 top run defensive teams. If rams get out ahead and you continue to rush only 3 it will be a long game for Cinci. Rams will force you to put more men in the box where then they will let Stafford sling it. Also KC would have won if they JUST RAN THE BALL.

3. Even as a fan I have no Idea about Ramsey as he is almost NEVER in 1v1. He plays a lot of soft man where he lets them catch it 5-10 yards then tackles them. Also plays MAJORITY in zone. The 1 play against Evans he was stride for stride with him. Brady through a dime and couldn't ask for a better pass. Also Evans is almost a sure fire HoF while Chase is a rookie. Don't be surprised if Ramsey gets in his head.

4. Again rose tinted glasses. Joe burrow is good but against a fairly good defense (Tennessee) he was average at best with no touchdowns and a pick. Also he lost his security blanket in Uzomah. Rams Defense is better than Tennessee's. It's very possible Stafford throws a random pick ball but Playoff Stafford is 6-1 td/int with 905 yards and 72% completion percentage against good defenses. Quick glance at Burrow in the playoffs and he is 4-2 td/int with 68% completion percentage and 842 yards. So there is a much greater chance of Burrow throwing a pick than Stafford. Burrow has also been sacked 12 times to Stafford's 5.

5. Nobody is stopping Kupp and he will get his. It has shown all year and why he has the greatest season of any WR ever. By limit I hope you mean under 150 yards because I see him easily getting 100. Odell has roasted almost everyone in 1v1s and if you leave him 1v1 its going to be repeat of what the Rams did last week. Both Wr's will have over 100 yards

6. I agree both are a big part if they play but it is a much bigger hit to Cinci than to Rams if neither play. Rams back up performed great almost like he was a starter while no one stepped up to fill Uzomahs shoes.

Rams win 31-24. They go into half tied 13-13

Either way good luck but you need to take them glasses off

On #2 and #5, the Bengals are pretty consistent about not stacking the box even when teams run it on them. I highly doubt we see a scenario where the Bengals decide now is the time to care about stopping the run.  Rams will have a high YPC, but it’s a hard decision whether to keep calling run plays with numbers at the expense of Stafford/Kupp/OBJ touches. Maybe like you say it’s a long day for Cincy, but I think they will go down trying to stop the run with what they’ve got rather than give up the pass defense. If DJ and company can’t just whip their man 1v1 like in Tennessee, I think they’re content to see how many points the Rams can get just running.

The one thing that has somewhat worked for the Bengals is 3rd and short on defense. It’s nice to say let’s stay on schedule and setup “easy” 3rd downs, but if you have 4 times 3rd and 1 or 2 per drive, the odds are decent you’ll make one mistake and kick.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Rams win this by 10+.  I just don't see how the Bengals handle the Rams pass rush.  Feels like running it a lot with Mixon is their best shot.  If they get into a situation where they have to throw a lot, Donald and Miller will be on Burrow often.

Football Perspective@fbgchase

not enough is being made, IMO, about how unusual it is that the SB features two teams of this caliber. From a points scored/points allowed perspective, and from a winning percentage perspective, this is the worst matchup in SB history.

In the last 11 years, the top passing team in the AFC (as measured by ANY/A) has made the Super Bowl 6 times, including this year's Bengals.

In the last 11 years, the top passing team in the NFC has made the Super Bowl 1 time.... the '16 Falcons.

No tickets yet but just got back from a very cool Super Bowl party downtown. Pictures and autographs with Davante Adams and Travis Kelce, great food and bar + a concert by One Republic. The town is definitely buzzing

You won't ever seen me defend Kroenke, but this isn't the first time Dickerson has had an issue with the Rams, making me think these issues are not one-sided.  It's easy to blame the franchise, but Dickerson seems like a problem.
Dickerson (one of my favorite all time players) is no doubt a diva, but the rams offering arguably their greatest player basically nose bleeds in their home stadium with them playing is pretty ####ty imo.

That is pretty lame of them, but I have to chime in and ask what possible argument is there for Dickerson as their best ever player? He's not even top-5 in my opinion. I'd actually say the Rams greatest player of all-time is playing today.

Yeah, I thought he had a legitimate gripe here. I, too, would rather watch in the comfort of my home with a giant television rather than sit in seats that require oxygen masks.

That said, does ED not know a single luxury box owner who’d invite him to the game? One would think hosting a Box that ED + 1 (or more) would be something of a bragging right, so I’m not sure why no one reached out to him.

I think there are plenty of good arguments for it, (all time Rushing record, one of the best RB’s of all time, face of the franchise for decades, etc etc ) but it’s certainly a subjective argument.  AD is making a case no doubt.

He’s their all-time rushing leader. He’s also a HOF running back, and holds the single season rushing record.

There’s more on his resume, but he’s qualified, I assure you.

I made that exact choice this year.  I live here in So-Cal and had the opportunity for face value tickets.  After a few days of thought I passed.

I bet he ends up at the game in great seats.  Someone steps up.

The baller move would have been to get the tickets at face value, then sell the tickets for a fortune, then watch at home. 💡

Actually in this case it would have been the ##### move. The tickets were offered by a friend who prior to him doing exactly this offered them to me at face value because he knows I’m a lifelong fan.  But had they not been it’s exactly what I would have done.  Lol

I'm saying Bengals 27-20. I think the Bengals D steps up a little but, and while Kupp likely gets his(though likely less than what he did vs TB and SF), I think the running game will contribute little to nothing, and I'm not confident another player steps up.

I think Joe Burrow has a monster game and wins the MVP. I think Chase hits some big plays. I may be wrong on this, but I doubt Chase sees much of Ramsey. I think Ramsey covers Higgins more, in the hopes that he can stop him, and they can provide more deep safety coverage to Chase. Ultimately, I don't think it matters, too many weapons to stop them all in my opinion. I think the Bengals use a quick passing game to counteract the Rams pass rush, with a lot of YAC. I think Mixon could also have a nice game receiving.

I think we'll get a fun game today. But ultimately, I think there is just something special with Burrow and this Bengals team.

Ah, ok that changes things. lol

I'm aware of his resume, but this is a franchise that in addition to Donald, had Deacon Jones, Jack Youngblood, and Merlin Olsen. Could make a case for Orlando Pace as well. Dickerson was elite, no question(he's my #6 RB of all-time) but he only played for the team for 4 years.

ETA: He's not the Rams leading rusher either, Steven Jackson is, though that is 100% longevity based.

Mans should still be offered a decent seat for the game tho. C’mon.

If I’m thinking Dickerson I’m picturing the classic blues with yellow accents & those gigantic goggles (with the yellow on the frame)

pretty sure everyone does. Nobody picturing him in a Colts jersey (though his first season there was still pretty epic) .
