Tampa Bay Bucs thread: back to back to back to back NFC South Champs (2 Viewers)

What does our cap space look like?

With this madness going on with Russ, assuming he did indeed get cut, would he be an option? Would we even prefer him to Baker?

After the last 2 years of performances, I'd have to imagine a Russ contract would look a lot more similar to a Baker extension than it did 2 years ago.

Cap space is plentiful next year but I’d prefer Baker to Russ. Not interested in Russ at all.
And you would have said the same at this time last year if Baker's name was mentioned as the starting QB in Tampa

3rd best overall in the NFC?
Same ones that lost 6 of 7 and bottomed out at 4-7
6-13-18-14 and 20 were some of the massive point totals that Baker Mayfield spearheaded during that run.

Beat the Saints and Panthers legit 10-7, host the top Wildcard at home which is likely the Dallas Cowboys...well that would be kind of fun for a blowoff year.
But seriously can we slow our roll on locking Baker up for multiple years?
At least let '23 play out because if he blows the Division or gets rolled out of Bucs Stadium in an ugly way, maybe the Bucs could broaden the search a little at QB?

Most of the dead cap comes off this year. It was smart of them to bring all of Brady’s hit into 2023. Even smarter getting Baker for $4M.

They’ll eat sup a bunch of that space just re-signing Baker, Evans, and Winfield though. Of course, with extensions you can play around with the $$ a little bit.

They could also restructure or release Shaq and/or Carlton Davis to move some $$.

Then extend Wirfs and kick his hit out.

Bottom line: They have the flexibility to do whatever they want in 2024.

@Ministry of Pain - Obviously you aren’t a fan of Mayfield, but I’d challenge you to make a list of current NFL QB’s and draft eligible QBs you’d legitimately want over him right now. Then break that list down into actual availability to the Bucs. There might be 10 guys you’d take over him “right now” on that first list. I’m not sure there are any on the second one.

Fact is the Bucs and his teammates love the guy. As a fan I’m thoroughly enjoying watching him play. I’d love to build around him.

This is the best season of his career. The second being 2020 with the Browns. They were 3rd in rushing that year. We’re 30th. He and Evans are carrying this offense.

Get the QB in place and build around him. That’s how you win.

Let's rewind to when they were 4-7, a lot of this spirited tug o'war as I would call it revolves around the sudden rush of a 4-game win streak.
It's not about being a fan, I'm a Bucs fan and I love that they are relevant. For the 1st time this season I was switching off the Phins during the Cowboys game to find out what was going on vs the Jags and was pretty surprised just how lopsided that game turned out.

Baker is 18th/40 QBs rated by PFF-Pro Football Focus and we all know the number of starting QBs that are down and out right now, I would say he barely cracks the Top 25 in the NFL so when you talk about figuring out the QB, with all due respect Graham I cannot share in the mini-love fest for Baker right now and I believe it will cost the Bucs in long run by making further plans with Baker.

My ongoing joke is Joe Flacco is a Top 10 QB right now in the NFL, he actually ranks 19th/40 on PFF right now, IMHO they are doing similar things although Flacco appears to be doing more since he came in off the streets as a back up for Watson. I also would like to add that I do not understand what PFF does to calculate their rankings but they are spoken about on TV like they are the real deal for player evaluations, who knows?

My larger point is I agree it feels good as a Bucs fan on an "Eat the Cap Hit" year to be talking about some of the things we're discussing. But all the good work IMHO will evaporate if we start talking about Baker as a long term solution in Tampa Bay, I'm not there yet.

I guess it depends where you look. I'd love to see who PFF has ranked ahead of him? He's 9th in passer rating and 16th in QBR.

I don't think a 3 year deal with Baker Mayfield sets the franchise back at all or is in any way a "long term solution." They could sign him to an extension and then in a deep QB draft like this select a Joe Milton developmental type in the 3rd or 4th round.

Also, if they don't re-sign Baker I think Mike Evans goes elsewhere. Unless they lose these last two games and/or just get absolutely smashed again (possible) in the playoffs then expect this full regime to be back for another couple years.

And again, if Baker isn't the QB then who is?

You make excellent points, I don't have all the answers
There will be plenty of time to debate all this after the season ends, and the final 2 weeks of the season plus any home Playoff game will need to be measured when discussing Baker
So it's not really fair to just say yay/nay right now, we'll see how mature he's become in the coming weeks.

The Bucs need to work on their running game to help make things easier if they are going to try and move forward with Mayfield
Cody Mauch has played like a Rookie and Robert Hainsey a 3rd Rd pick from a couple years ago has been well below avg at Center, ranks 30th/37 rated Centers on PFF
They could use a LG-C-RG make over unless Mauch can get a lot better. White might be a great receiving back but I would still like to see the Bucs get a frontline pounding RB.

I'm going to get in my fan seat over here and buckle up, grab my popcorn and enjoy watching the Bucs play meaningful football in late December.
Many on the Bucs bring a lot of Playoff experience with them, this is not uncharted waters for guys like Evans and Godwin
You don't here that discussed on National TV or larger sports media outlets.

Baker is 7th in epa this year. Ahead of him are Purdy, Prescott, Allen, Tua, Hurts and Love. Mahomes, Stafford and Goff round out the top-10. He’s been good. It’s not really debatable. Now whether you think he is the guy for the next 2-3 years that’s a different subject but there is really no better option available.

So we back to firing Bowles again and punting Baker to the moon?

Think I’ll skip the playoff game if they make it. My 3 2023 games were Dallas in the playoffs, Lions this year and then the Saints. All over at the half. That’s like $1300 of pure ****.

@Ministry of Pain we ain’t tankin bro
Yeah but the Bucs should have
8-8 mediocrity
Going nowhere and not much to look forward to in the Draft

-Better tag Baker, right?
You never actually said it but you seem to vote for it

-I'm just salty today all the way around and I wish I weren't so forgive me, I won't keep going back and forth
Wounds everywhere on this armor today, you blow on me I'll likely fall sideways to the ground

I do like how much of a binary event Sunday is. Win, and the suicide squad of Bowles/Baker comes back next year, you get a home playoff game that should be winnable and everybody is happy with the year. Lose, and they probably clean house with the coaching staff although I still think Baker is back.

Team is bipolar.

I’d fire Bowles before the plane lands in Tampa if they lose this one.

Winning the division for the 3rd year in a row with $80M in dead cap isn’t some nothing-burger accomplishment. It’s incredible. If…

Imagine being the Saints. They gave Derek Carr $125M for less mediocrity.

In spite of the massive dead cap $, the Bucs still have a pretty talented roster and shouldn't be losing games like they did yesterday. Poor time management has also been a problem this year. I know it won't happen but I would still fire Todd Bowles regardless of what happens the rest of this season. There have to be better options out there.

I would too, but who’s a candidate for the job. They don’t have a high pick. Don’t have a QB.

Likely scenario is another division title and another year. Hope we get GB and Jac Baker more often than not.

Winning the division means the 49ers will be coming to Tampa next season!! Wooooot!! Hoping it's a night game!!

Baker almost 4100 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 10 INTs. Imagine being told that before the season.

That said, offense has been putrid the last two weeks. He did look hurt today.

I saw that and groaned because I thought it was in San Francisco for the 19th straight year.
SF played in Tampa in 2018 and 2019. Tampa won in 18 (Mullens at QB for SF) and lost in 19 to Jimmy G.
They sure do play a lot.
Every year each team plays an entire division in the conference plus the same finisher in the other 2 divisions.

So 1st place finishers always play 1st place finishers, 2nd plays 2nd, etc.

Looks like we’ll get the Eagles….
Might be a better draw to play the Eagles vs Dallas at the moment. Cowboys beat the Bucs rather easily in the pLayoffs as I recall last year
If the Bucs got lucky next week, showdown in SF the week after unless there is an upset vs Detroit or Dallas
Bucs bring a lot of Playoff experience

Funniest part of all this is the Saints deferring and spending all that money just to make the playoffs again. Lmao.

The Eagles again. How funny is that. Seems like every time we make the playoffs the Eagles or Rams await us.

@Ministry of Pain we ain’t tankin bro
No we're not

-Super impressed with them winning tonight and making the season meaningful with no cap space and having to get Baker

-Some things I like already this week, Bucs are going to be fairly good underdogs, that's good so nobody believes in them, won't be talked up a lot
-Detroit is not the beast some think right now, they are in uncharted waters and won a Wildcard game by 1-point, let's not make them out to be the '74 Steelers
They are not going to have the Playoff experience that so many Bucs will bring with them on Ford Field, I sorta the Bucs chances for an upset and shock everyone
People are overlooking 4 years in a row now Playoffs, 6 Playoff wins over that stretch with a Lombardi Trophy, this is a veteran team that still has guys like Vita Vea clogging up the middle
Goff can make errors, he was run out of LA after a SB appearance, he's not an elite QB, solid and does well with the talent around him but he can make mistakes.

Go Bucs Go!

Packers @ Bucs NFC Championship?
Since the Bucs were an afterthought at one point in the season and are now in the Final 4 teams in the NFC, don't think they care or are worried about home/away in the NFCC
The focus will be all Lions this week.
I bet Detroit thinks they have a pushover here and will walk into the NFCC, mostly talking about the city vs the actual Head Coach there
Dan Campbell will have his team ready to roll, I'm sure

Still think the Bucs have a chance for a big upset on the road

I mean, it's only a 5.5 spread, wouldn't be that huge of an upset from an odds standpoint.
