Tampa Bay Rays 2010 thread (1 Viewer)

20 games over .500 at the break, with Hellickson just sitting there waiting in the minors. Tough June, but you have to like where they are at.

I read that because of having Hellickson ready to go, that they wouldn't be opposed to dealing Garze  for a big bat. Anyone hear any concrete talk of that happening or is that just writer/internet fodder?

Definitely is being discussed IMO. The FO may feel they can't sign him longterm, so get something for him now while a ring is within reach.Lots of rumors floating about Garza, Upton, etc....for Corey Hart, Adam Dunn, etc. I'd believe anything...as long as it's not trading Hellickson or Jennings for a rent-a-player.Although a Price/Neimann/Shields rotation in the playoffs is scary. Would much rather it be Price/Neimann/Garza.

Garza isn't going anywhere this season. Maybe in the off-season, but not now. They're too close to trade a guy of his caliber who has major post-season experience.

Gump > Briggy will be the everyday SS next year. Rodriguez will likely be the second baseman. Bartlett will be gone.

Yea...that was a little sarcastic. I've almost had it with BJ. If he could just muster up a .260 BA, play gold glove CF, and not make bone-headed mistakes once a week I'd love him. That's looking less and less likely by the day.Jennings moves to LF next season...Perez is hitting what .200 at AAA? So not sure we really have any other options. Unless you move Zobrist or Joyce to CF...assuming Joyce can be better.

Evan Longoria is really, really good at baseball.
It's nice to be able to rely on the defense of guys like Longoria, Bartlett, Pena, and Upton when they're not hitting.Brignac seems to be stepping it up defensively lately too.

Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports that Jeremy Hellickson will be called up to start on Monday against the Twins.

Rays manager Joe Maddon made it clear Saturday that Hellickson will not be joining the rotation permanently. He'll simply provide the other five Tampa starters with an extra day of rest. The 23-year-old right-hander has thrown together a 2.45 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 123 strikeouts in 117 2/3 innings this season at Triple-A Durham and may be worth a shot in deeper mixed formats.

Great game last night, excellent game tonightThese are the best two teams in baseball IMO and are VERY evenly matched
I'd give the edge to Tampa's Manager and front office... Payroll and Average/Player1. New York Yankees $206,333,389 $8,253,336...21. Tampa Bay Rays $71,923,471 $2,663,832

Damn good series. Shields was ridiculous out there. Felt like a playoff game at the Trop.

Hellickson starts tomorrow. :football:

At the risk of jinxing this, Hellickson looks pretty ridiculous out there.

This pipeline of pitching talent is just absurd.

Jesus, Matt Joyce can freaking slug it.
So I would think he's cementing the everyday DH spot and the 4 or 5 in the lineup. Can he play anything other than OF? Could we use him to backup Pena/Longo instead of Aybar?

I know they said that they were optioning him back to Durham, but couldn't they keep him up here and go with a six man rotation? More rest for everyone.

8-1 homestand. Alone in first. Awesome.

Dan Johnson looked good too. Two walks and a hard hit ball to center. I imagine we'll be seeing a lot of him. My guess, vs righties

Zobrist, 2B

Crawford

Longoria

Pena, 1B

Joyce, RF

Upton

Johnson, DH

Jaso

Bartlett

With Brignac mixed in occasionally.

be funny if the catwalk costs the Rays the division.
It would be fantastic. More ammunition for the owner to move to Tampa, more pressure on the St Pete leadership.
Yea for the long-term health of the franchise, it certainly doesn't hurt to see. You can count on that being used as an example, oh, 500 times in the next year.As for today, it sucked.

Nonsense. It was great.

old :fu: smilie.

Joe Maddon:

"Perfect commercial advertisement for having a new ballpark...crying need for a new ballpark in this area...we need a real baseball field...no better reason."

Now Timmy K chiming in on ESPN about the ballpark...saying an executive friend of his who considered a job with the Rays told him that they'd 'never make it in St Pete. The location and ballpark are terrible'.

This is well worth the cost of 2 runs.

Hellickson is just filthy. 7 IP, 7 Ks, 3 hits, no runs, no walks. Only 86 pitches.

Going to be fun watching him with Price, Niemann, Davis and Garza/Shields over the next few years. Ridiculous pitching staff.

Did not foresee this sentence coming from my keyboard 3 months ago...but...

Good to see Carlos back in the lineup.

:goodposting: And Hellickson needs to stay in the rotation. He is pitching better than Davis or Shields.

He probably is, but he's also on an innings pitched limit, and he's nearing it. I'd rather save him for late-September/October in the bullpen or spot starts.

Said it before...will say it again. BJ looks like a different hitter from the leadoff spot. Something just works better for him mentally.
