TE Darren Waller, MIA (2 Viewers)

I was also excited about Jalin Conyers who ended up on IR. I would have liked to have seen Miami bring in a veteran who could bridge the gap.

It makes you wonder both why they didn't pay Jonnu and why were his feet kicking his own *** to get out of Miami? That might be a really ominous question to consider if you're a Miami fan. The Jets are horrible, but will Miami implode and actually be worse than the worst team of the decade? And is New England really that improved? Anarchy99 doesn't seem to think so.

The AFC East is just a terrible division. I'm waiting for Waller's announcement. We just had Amari Cooper retire, why not make it two-fer on a news day?

I can see why they did not pay Jonnu or needed him to facilitate the trade but what really surprises me is how they did not get more aggressive for Fant. $2.7m cap number to be part time player in Cincy, surely would have cost little to no more to get him to come to South Beach.

Yeah, I can see that also. You don't want to be tying up money in Jonnu for any longer than the current year (and if you're a contender then maybe 2026). Good point about Fant, but he's really replacement-level, it seems. More than even Jonnu. But Fant you wouldn't have been stuck paying longer than a year so that would have made sense.

Good point about Fant, but he's really replacement-level,
My counter to that would be a lot of people thought Jonnu was replacement level or a hair above that before last year and I say that with respect to low contract he got as an UFA and secondly I'm not sure the Dolphins have a replacement level TE and it's starting to sound dubious Waller will be playing this week or who knows when or how often?

I wasn’t saying Jonnu was above that, but I can see why you thought I did. I agree with all of your points here.

I would like to continue my thematic string of posts, affectionately titled, “the Dolphins are just so f’n stupid”, part 1,372

Everyone, “man, Jonnu was a beast!”
Dolphins: let’s move him for a half eaten pretzel & sign someone older!”

Cmon

Counterpoint: Jonnu was inarguably one of their best, most consistent players last year. Age ain’t nothin but a number sometimes.

Certainly better than tying up a single dollar in Waller.

Yeah, but I'm really cautious about letting my fantasy interests color my dispassionate evaluations. He's worth what Pittsburgh is paying him. It's not just Arthur Smith liking him, although I'm sure that helps.

I thought it was a weird signing by PIT, too, but then PIT’s had a decidedly weird offseason so I guess it’s thematic at this point.

That said, from a RL perspective Jonnu was great in MIA as well.

Is this sustainable? It seems so especially with Tyreek out now. That's a huge target share that opened up.

Will waller stay healthy? Very big question. Guy was out of the league for a few years and took a bit to get ramped up to even play this season. Odds are not good he lasts the whole year.

Should you add him? Tight End is a wasteland. You pretty much need to take the chance on any viable option getting 7+ targets a game. This guy happened to catch 2 TDs right out of the gate. So you could do worse.

Grabbed him in a dynasty because Njoku has been sucking so bad. Unfortunately, didn't start him, but he will be in my lineup next week. You can definitely do worse at this point.

Last time I had this guy on a roster it was 2021 and he killed me. Time for some redemption maybe. Kudos to anyone who got this guy on a best ball team.

I hate to say this, but last night was such a good story and I've always pulled for Waller. But he is not a model of mental or physical stability, and that lack of stability has interfered with his availability, which is crucial.

Time is the only cure for situations like this. Maybe he's more stable and mature now. No idea what is past issues were, but again...time and experience is all people need sometimes.

This is where I am at.

I'll come on here and eat my crow and say I did not see that coming. Who knew all that the Fins were missing was a guy that had been out of football for 2 years, whos last decent game was in 2023. Waller fixed everything!

It is a great story but this is going to be heartbreaking and likely end in a not so great way.

I guess if you are desperate and need a TE to play go for it. But his 3 catches on 27 yards isn't great unless he is going to score 2 TDs each game.

Great for Waller and the fins to finally get a W but it might be too little too late. The good thing is, if you have Waller you likely got him cheap.

Waller only played 16 snaps. He's not even up to speed yet. I've held him due to his high ceiling.

Waller has rare talent. Big, fast, and with good hands. If McDaniel gets creative, he could have a monster season. Look what Jonnu did last year and he's not near the receiver Waller is.

The definition of a lottery ticket. Have Kittle waiting in the wings and decided to grab him right before kick off. Fannin hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire and Hill’s injury makes things interesting. Why wouldn’t you take a gamble on high upside? Who else out there has this sort of opportunity on waivers? You gamble and hope it hits.

Same, '22 and '23. When he came back this year, I didn't know what team he was on.

My pre-draft notes included:
- DO NOT draft Darren Waller
- DO draft MIA TE

{Head explodes}

He burned me twice in the past...with that said, he's on waivers in one of my leagues, and I've got Kraft on a bye, so I'm taking a flyer on him for a week. To be fair, it's not violating your rules if you get him off Waivers...you didn't draft him.

Took the plunge with Kraft on bye in one league, and overpaid in dynasty where my only weakness is TE what with Njoku busting and Andrews and Likely making me want to knock their two heads together until they're both dead.

Welcome to my 4 TE TE room Waller! Stay healthy! Don't be a mirage.

He's a mirage I just know it.

Waller has always been very similar to Jordan Reed for me. If he can stay healthy he is the #1 TE in football, but will he ?? Probably not, but they are doing good job of getting him back into football shape this season so far.

The best thing about this situation is the opportunity is there with Hill gone. They need him. Maybe his body needed a year off to heal. Also, he has a very creative coach who convinced him to come out of retirement, so it must have been with the promise that "We are going to get you the ball". Clearly, they are looking for him in the redzone.

Cheers 🍻 to his health !!

Waller does have rare talent. I think it's easy to forget given his recent history.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he ends up being a top-5 TE this season, even missing the 3 games. We know McDaniel can scheme a TE given Jonnu's production last year. Jonnu is a decent pass-catcher, but Waller is in a whole other world. This could be a marriage made in heaven.

Yeah, Reed was a good one. A classic F-type TE. Waller has 4" on Reed, though, and there's no way he's 238 (his listed weight)...more like 250. Waller is 6'6" and fairly thick. He's also much faster than Reed was. It doesn't look like Waller has slowed down too much with age, either. When you put all that together, he's an elite TE.

Waller also makes for a good story given his past. It'll be interesting to see what he can do this season.

Tua hyper targeted the TE last year when Tyreek was gimpy. I’m optimistic that if Waller stays healthy he’ll produce as a TE and second flex.

Just picked him up for 14% of FAAB budget. Small sample size but it looks like he still has some juice.

Finally got one share off waivers in a league where he cleared waivers the past two weeks. It's a devy, so there is the consideration of roster space because teams roster developmental college players, but still, nobody wanted him. So I finally picked him up for free. It's not as if I was crazy about him either.

Bid 53% of my FAAB in one dynasty namely bc the 3 tight ends I roster all happen to have a week 5 bye, but also stashed him another league for about the same %. Tia being who he is and Tyreek not being in, it’s worth the shot at the upside bc right now no tight ends seems to have any higher upside than the next. The guy with targets usually wins here. All in.
