TE Zach Ertz, WAS (9 Viewers)

Rotoworld:

Zach Ertz has continuously worked with the Eagles' second-team offense at training camp.

Ertz remains behind veteran Brent Celek, who is one of coach Chip Kelly's favorites due to his ability to block. That's the area of Ertz's game that needs improvement, and it's going to hold him back until he becomes competent enough to get Kelly's trust. According to Eagles beat writers, Ertz has been a standout player in the passing game at camp, but this remains a true competition. Ertz needs to pass Celek and get a bump in playing time to reach his ceiling.

This guy is kind of tough to figure out without new information about his role. Kind of risky to draft him but he does have pretty good upside. Cameron may be the better target as he should do well unless he gets injured. Eifert is going soon after.

@EliotShorrParks: Zach Ertz is going to be out a few weeks with a groin injury, per source. Should play Week 1. #Eagles

@Jeff_McLane: Kelly said that Dr. Myerson (sports hernia surgeon) checked out Zach Ertz. They want to "clean it up." Didn't say he was having procedure.

I own this guy in multiple leagues, and I'm ready to cut bait. I would rather take a chance on MyCole Pruitt at this point. I don't think Ertz will ever live up to the hype.

I'm done.

You're "done" with a 3rd year player in an explosive offense because of an injury? He had almost 60 catches and 700 yards as a 2nd year TE playing like half the snaps last year, with crappy QB play

So you'd rather cut bait on this guy, to hold a total lottery ticket flier at a position that's notoriously hard to develop young players, in Pruitt?

Smart. Not knee-jerk at all.

Man I could have had a kings ransom this summer for him.
Talent is still there -- IMO he'll be fine, maybe even this year if / when Sanchez gets in there. Ertz needs to be used to stretch the field down the seam, and Bradford hasn't yet seen a one yard dump off that he didn't like.

I guess you didn't watch the game because this actually was the game he went deep... But still not to Ertz. Kelly hates him for not blocking or something you know with all the stellar blocking TEs in the league like Gronk and Jimmy Graham and what not.

I was actually encouraged this week. The production was lacking but no one on the Eagles had a massive game in the receiving department. What means more to me is in week 3 he reverted back to a snap count similar to what we saw last season and that was a major concern. So to see that snap count rise back up to near 70% mark is more encouraging to me then his lack of production was an issue this week.

Keep in mind that some doctors say his surgery was exact same as Fosters and he had his a week or two later. To me he has not looked 100% physically but he's getting there and if the snap counts keep up I think the production will soon follow.

Right, because a couple of deep passes this past week outweigh the http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_yds_per_att_career.htm'>mountain of evidence accumulated since 2010 that he isn't willing or able to push the ball downfield.

Agreed on the snap count.

That has to be encouraging that he's on the field more than Celek now. That seems to indicate that Kelly is more comfortable with Ertz's blocking.

The production hasn't been there, but the same could be said for the entire passing game. It's not like Matthews or Aghelor have been lighting it up either.

Let's drill down a little deeper.

The o-line is torn up and celeb is the better blocker. Does that translate Into:

A) Ertz value sharp decline because snaps will be less again.

B) Eagles go with more two TE formations and Ertz value rises as he become the TE "receiver".

C) neither as Eagles continue to twist in the wind.

So through game 6, the numbers for Ertz and the entire Eagles' passing game aren't there, but worth noting is Ertz's usage - including snap counts far surpassing Celek. Not seeing the field a lot was a big deterrent for Ertz last year, but things seem to have changed. The talent is there, so if the Eagles pass game ever starts clicking, could be a good 2nd half for Ertz.

Zach Ertz played 67-of-78 snaps Week 6 against the Giants. Analysis: The 86-percent snap rate was the highest of the season for Ertz, who has seen his share of snaps steadily increase the last several weeks. Ertz also was second on the team in targets with seven. The pass game is faltering, but Ertz has finally established himself as a factor. He will be worth streaming consideration this week against a Panthers defense which just gave up 140 yards to Jimmy Graham.

The double TE sets are getting him out there more. I think that will continue with our WRs getting banged up every week (and generally sucking thus far).

Agree. Not sure if it is design or coincidence but the WRS being hurt and Ertz being in more is helping a lot.

Don't underestimate the value of DeMarco Murray in this equation. He has been pedestrian trying to run side to side but last night when they put both TEs in and he plowed straight ahead, he looked like what the Eagles probably thought they were buying. IF Chip sees that as something he wants to explore more it should be a boon for Ertz (more time on the field, the Eagles sustaining drives better, more easy releases off the line as teams key on DeMarco).

The bootleg has been pretty effective for Bradford for the most part. Ertz is prime for that cross field mid level route.

Rotoworld:

Zach Ertz - TE - Eagles

Zach Ertz (concussion) has been ruled out for Thursday's Week 12 game against the Lions.

Brent Celek will get the start and play every snap. He has some streaming appeal after back-to-back solid games as a pass catcher, even if some of the damage was done in garbage time. Ertz should be ready for Week 13.

Anyone who owns him but doesn't have their team name as "My Ball Zach Ertz" is no friend of mine.

On another note, perfect buy low IMO. Terrible luck from the QB position and lingering injuries...

Edit: buy low in DYNASTY

Rotoworld:

Zach Ertz reeled in two of four targets for nine yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' Week 13 win over the Patriots.

Ertz overpowered Devin McCourty on his five-yard touchdown in the second quarter. It was his first end-zone visit of the season. He was only targeted once in the second half. Ertz will be in the TE2 discussion next week at home against Buffalo.

Dec 6 - 9:21 PM

Rotoworld:

Zach Ertz caught 5-of-7 targets for 98 yards Week 14 against the Bills.

Ertz was Bradford's most reliable weapon all game, consistently getting open in the intermediate areas of the field. Ertz made a big grab on the first touchdown drive, and he had a rumbling 41-yard catch-and-run on the game-winning field goal drive. Despite the big game, Ertz has not been a reliable fantasy option all season and has a tough matchup with the Cardinals next week. He will be a TE2 Sunday night.

Dec 13 - 6:17 PM

Still a disappointing season, but have to wonder what kind of season he would have had if he didn't miss all of preseason and thus important time to click with Bradford early on. With Matthews inconsistent at best and Agholor never seeming to show much all year, Ertz could have been big time this year. Improved his blocking big time this year, so he even managed to push Celek in the background.

All that said, hard not to like this guy's talent for dynasty purposes if they continue to throw to him more, and he can stay healthy.

That's a lot of coin, but if he's used much more than Kelly did (prior to the last several games), he can definitely be a top 5 TE. The contract certainly speaks volumes as to how Pedersen plans to use him.

I would guess Pederson sees him as very "Kelce" like and would use him as a primary pass catcher (one of the top two options as a pass catcher in general and a lot of use in the crossing routes).

Kelce only got 103 targets in 16 games, ranking 13th in targets per game for TEs last year. I'm not sure how high Ertz will go in redraft next year, but I'm guessing he'll need at least 120 targets to justify his ADP.

Looks like Ladarius Green is the only UFA that could bump him down this offseason.
I like Green, but I'll be surprised if he gets much more than half what Ertz got. That's a huge payday for someone with his short, unremarkable career. That emoticon was legitimately my reaction when I read Ertz's contract the first time.
Agreed - it is rather eye opening. No one is denying that he has considerable talent and promise, but seems like he got rewarded for a huge final month of the season and expectations that will continue in the future. And then giving Celek some decent coin - although nothing in the range of Ertz - the very next day shows Pederson's commitment to the TE position, but also a lot of money tied up in the position.

Disagree, I don't think Ertz got rewarded for the final month. They knew what they had in him before that, they were saw first hand all the early training camp reports of him tearing it up and they knew that his slow play early was just healthy related.

Ertz's deal is going to look like a bargain next year and Eagles know this as well, which is why they wanted to do this contract now and not give him another season to "prove" himself.

As for Green I would say based on talent alone he'd get a pretty size able contract, not Ertz money, but more than half. Just not sure how much his concussion history is going to impact him.

As with any contract you have to look at the guaranteed money. I think this is actually pretty team friendly. Ertz got 13.3 million guaranteed. As a point of reference, Charles Clay got 24 million guaranteed last year. Ertz's average is 900K more than Clay.

Essentially, its a 2 year deal worth 13.3 million.

Entering the 3rd year its basically pay as you go for the Eagles, with each year being roughly a 8 million dollar non guaranteed deal. The third year cap hit is 4.8 million to cut him, but each year after that the cap hit drops by 1.6 million.

ETA: The 13.3 is what is fully guaranteed. The other 6.7 million is probably an injury only guarantee, although that is just speculation.

Imo its better to pay for what you think is going to happen more than what has already happened. Not ertz fault they didn't use him more.

Doubtful he'll ever look like a bargain as the 4th highest paid TE, but he could easily live up to the contract. I don't blame them from trying to lock him up before free agency, but the deal he got exceeded what I'd have expected him to get if he was an actual FA this year.

He had the 6th most targets of any TE

He was only 21 targets behind the NFL leader. People will need to keep that in mind when making their inevitable astronomical (possibly even Finley-esque) projections next year.

I think he's already a top 4 TE or at the very least he'd make my top 4 TE's I'd want going forward and he's just coming into is own. I also think TE deals are going to rise soon. So yea, Eagles got a bargain in terms of total dollars paid and how they structured the deal and a whole lot less then what they'd have to pay him next season if he hit the open market.

I'm a diehard eagles fan and watched all the games. Never would have thought he had that many targets. He had games where he flat out disappeared. Bradford was also harassed most of the year behind a crap oline and chucked it in his direction out of desperation Guess that's a target. But target stats can be misleading

Ertz finished strong last year but I'm not sure I'm completely sold on him keeping it up. What numbers do you guys see him putting up/were would u rank him this uear

If I remember correctly he finished strong in 2014 too,  In my opinion his upside is what Eifert did last year, I don't expect him to do that though. I think he will be your average low te1 type of guy.

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Zach Berman reports the Eagles plan for tight ends to play "a major role in the offense."

"Tight end is a strength of this roster, this offensive unit," OC Frank Reich said. "If you look at Doug’s [Pederson] system and what they did in Kansas City with their tight ends and how we’ll utilize them here, it’ll be very consistent with that." This is another great soundbite for Zach Ertz just a week after Pederson said he will be featured in the red zone. Travis Kelce saw 21.8 percent of the Chiefs' targets last year including 11 inside the red zone. If Ertz gets that kind of usage, he will be a value at his TE12 draft cost.

Kind of a bummer Bradford was traded, as he really seemed to have chemistry with Ertz.

Daniels/Wentz may still lean on Ertz given the poor WR situation, but I think this knocks down  Ertz's value and potential of moving closer to the upper tier of TEs.
