Nishikori was hugely backed just hours ago in the same role. Granted some of that were probably Federer fans wanting to see their guy face Nishikori over Djokovic but even if Federer was already knocked out Nishikori would have gotten great support.

Even in Tiger's prime and his huge fan base there were enough people who didn't like him or rather would cheer for someone else that if Tiger was in a tight last round the other guys would get a lot of support.

Just one of those weird exceptions to the rule.

Any player down 2 sets has the crowd on their side. Fans root for more tennis.Agree with your larger point that Federer is more loved and respected than your average GoAT contender. The only one comparable might be mature Agassi, Pete's last or Jimmy's night match run. Roger connects with his fans in a way that is exceptional.

This didn't start at 2 sets to love though, whole match was Pro Fed. Started to really explode when he got 1 set down but don't think Cilic was even getting much love set 1 besides the people who thought it would be the only way to see a compelling match.

Name wise it will get killed being on a Monday afternoon, just lost all the casual fans here. But the bump in Japan and support from Asians should make up for a decent amount for the uninterested people lost due to Fed's departure.

Personally I'm excited more than this morning. I was assuming Djokovic would beat Federer in probably 4. Now I have no clue who should be favored.

I'm just going early and getting hammered. I wanted to root for Federer, now I guess I'll root for the tall Japanese guy.

Cilic really surprised me not only breaking back but not needing a tiebreak to take the third.

Locker room has to be exciting right now. You can say things should return to normal with Murray entering 2015 with his back surgery a year behind him and Nadal should at least start the year healthy (though he still had back issues in the Aussie final) but if those guys were honest I doubt many were thinking they could win a major and now they'll all see two of them this year go to people besides the big 4. Got to be a lot of confidence for those other guys that they too can break through and win one.

2015 majors are going to be interesting to see if the Djokovic, Murray, and Nadal can fend these guys off and control the majors again.

Cilic had never reached a Slam final, never reached Masters final, & never won a 500. Six of his 11 titles came in Zagreb & Chennai.

Wow, that's shockingly bad.

So two guys won majors this season who had previously not even won a masters 1000 (although Wawrinka did win a master soon after the AO)

I always thought Cilic at some point would win a major... but then the doping thing happened and I figured his career was over... now it seems to be trending upwards.... but at the same time it's going to be hard to look at him as a favorite on any level moving forward... kind of the same way we view Wawrinka moving forward.

Weird year of tennis.... Federer, Djoker, and Nadal all leave the season with a lot of regrets... Nadal that he didn't win the AO, Djoker that he still couldn't beat Nadal at the French and that he couldn't take a USO set up for an easy win.. and Federer that he couldn't capitalize after Djoker lost.. If Federer had beaten Cilic he would've cleaned up on Nishikori.

 
Roanic just won a match winning 98% of his first serves in play, 39 out of 40, against Istomin. The only point lost was on match point.

that's pretty sick.

when a big server is on fire on a friendly surface like indoor or something, you probably can't win.

 
Possible Match-Ups for top 4 seeds vs seeds until SF

Top Half:

Djokovic: Verdasco, Isner/Bautista Agut, Lopez/Monfils/Benneteau/Raonic

Wawrinka: Cuevas, Dolgopolov/Fognini, Ferrer/Simon/Giraldo/Nishikori

Bottom Half:

Nadal: Rosol, Gasquet/Anderson, Berdych/Mayer/Kolhschreiber/Gulbis

Federer: Chardy, Robredo/Karlovic, Murray/Klizan/Goffin/Dimitrov

Probably too soon to make an impact coming back from injury but dangerous floater Del Potro is in Novak's quarter though can't face him until the QF.

I have seen him in yellow, orange, blue, green. Not sure why pink seems to be the most he wears. Hope he's getting paid more wearing that...

He will, just not tonight barring injury.

I still don't really think he'll win another major. If he couldn't win Wimbledon or the USO last year with dream draws, i don't have much hope vs. a non-dream draw like this is.

 
If this result holds, the draw in the bottom quarter couldn't be kinder for Bouchard. She already can make the SF with beating one seed but if Maria goes out, the highest seed left would be 21.

 
Now I REALLY hate Federer. He won and his match was before Nadal's otherwise I could be :sleep: now! :angry:

Nadal is wearing his lucky pink shirt again...

 
So Nadal scraped by couple nights ago due to illness and is playing later tonight. Hopefully he feels better. Federer on the other hand is not looking good at the moment, down 2 sets... Hopefully it's good riddance to him tonite.
