Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (1 Viewer)

Federer is the best ever right?
17 majors and the record number of weeks at #1 seems to suggest so.
He might be, but not because of these 2 stats.
I'm a bit confused. That would be like saying Michael Phelps might be the best swimmer ever, but not because of his gold medals.

Or that Michael Jordan might be the best ever, but not because of his scoring titles, championships, or MVP's
Well swimming is timed so you can, you know, compare times to see who is better between eras.

Jordan is a better example. Is he great because of those things, or did his peak just happen to coincide with the decline of the 3 80's dynasties, a top 50 running mate at his peak, and the expansion of the league? Is Lebron a better individual player? Some say yes. But he'll probably never have the rings or the scoring titles. Fed is kinda like Bill Russell. Most rings, but less competition. Bill had to get thru Wilt and that was it. Fed had to face at most 1-2 guys who even had a chance to beat him at a major. Yes in part due to his greatness, but also due to weak fields and the decline of US Men's tennis. No other era was so shallow at the top. Doesn't mean he's NOT the GOAT, but doesn't prove that he is either.
ahh. ok, the weak era argument. I've read round and round this argument on the talk tennis forums for years.

You can never answer the age old question.. did a guy dominate because he was better than everyone else or because those people just sucked?

The problem with dominance is that when no one else wins anything, then they don't develop any sort of resume.

I mean Andy Roddick was probably a 4-5 major winner if Federer doesn't exist... Federer won several majors after the emergence of Rafael Nadal (albeit not on clay) and Djokavic, and Murray. He beat former multiple major winners like Safin and Hewitt in route to his titles.

An argument like that would mean that if a dude was so good that he won 20 consecutive majors that people would say it's the weakest era of tennis of all time.

Is Serena playing in a "weak era" ? Did Steffi Graf?

All a guy can do is beat the people in front of him, as consistently as possible. With the exception of Rafael Nadal, Federer beat the guys he played. more often than not.

With Nadal you've got a guy that WAS an exceptional tennis player... the best ever on clay, and very very good on every single surface. He relentlessly beat Federer on Clay, then when Federer's game hit a slight decline, he pounced on him on the other surfaces as well.

It's a shame to me that the Federer of this season can't play this season's horrible Nadal and get back a few of those matches.

Thrilled for Serena Williams! She was very nervous in this final match and it wasn't an easy one. 21 grand slam titles now, and has won all 4 grand slams. Wow. And such a classy lady!

She's within 1 from Steffi Graff for most major titles. Big pressure on her for the US open not just for passing Steffi, but for the wins for the calendar grand slams! GooooooooooooO Serena!!

Next up, Fed v Djoko. Should be a good one. Hopefully Fed can pull it off and break the tie for most Wimbledon wins of 7 with Sampras tomorrow!

Serena has to be on an enhancement program, probably has been for years.
Well, yeah.In all of sports cheating, I don't think there's a bigger slam dunk certainty.

There was plenty of specific evidence she was in the Balco stable before that blew up (an era that, not surprisingly, coincided with the biggest slump of her career). Seems like it took her a couple seasons to find a suitable replacement. Not a shock that this was also the era she went from linebacker, to Oprah in a tennis dress, then back to a linebacker. She's a surer cheat than Bonds.

Shame her father couldn't just stay on the association's good side. She could have avoided all the skulking around and just have done it openly like Agassi.

Serena Williams sure looks like she's on steroids and / or other PEDs. Do they even test them in tennis?

They do but I believe they only test twice a year out of competition. Serena skipped one of those two tests back in 2009 and there was no repercussions. Others has skipped tests as well. The testing is a joke.

I just assume all elite athletes are. The folks producing enhancements (& masking agents) are years ahead of testing. Hell, I be shocked if just one NFL player wasn't on an illegal supplement.

Is Mrs. Dentist out buying the Saran Wrap in case Fed wins?

Federer blew that service game right after he broke Joker - I believe him when he says he has to believe he can win, it seems almost mental the way he's approached the big matches the last couple years.

He's still GOAT for me either way but I'm with Dentist's boner rooting for Roger.

Brutal. Got a break, had set points, now about to lose set.

Well Roger won first set last year and lost match.

We'll see, but blown chance that could cost him. Games like this have razor thin margins.

It's mental - he's not winning. Any player other than Joker (and probably Nadal) and Roger follows up that break with a huge service game and wins the 1st set easy.

I blame Kevin Anderson for not winning after being up 2 sets nil, just like I blame dimitriov for last year. Bullcrap I tell you.

Also if Stan hadn't beaten Djokovic at the French, he would be less hungry and motivated. Screw you Stan

Admittedly I don't watch a lot of tennis - mostly just the majors but does Djokovic have awkward slips and falls all the time? Seems like he does that a couple of times every match I see.

He stretches and slides and is probably the most flexible player ever. So he makes these gets no one would but often the weak link is traction

Brutal - almost every big point is ending with a Federer miss.
If nole wins this set and then the match this is going to be one of those matches where it was a LOT closer than the score indicates. Tough for Roger to swallow unless he gets this tb

I find it fascinating that age hasn't really caught up with Roger yet but his mental edge is gone in these matches. You would expect it to be the other way around.
