Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (2 Viewers)

Cilic and Federer both racked up errors, but jeez, the intensity level was insane. Fantastic match. In the first couple of sets, it felt like 2014 all over again, when it looked like Federer might have an "easier" final matchup at the US Open with Nishikori knocking Djokovic out, but ended up getting eliminated by Cilic in his semifinal. Huge win for Federer against his toughest opponent in the tournament so far.

good post

Raonic will be really tough to work with Friday.    I hope this match didn't take too much out of the old man...   Raonic is the type of guy you'll have to beat a lot with tiebreaks.

Really would be interesting to know what Mac tells Raonic about dealing with the crowd noise/reactions.  Federer rode it today and it certainly will be heavy in his favor in the SF.

Cilic had less support than the Cavs for game 7 at Golden State.  Radio guys weren't even pretending like they were neutral.

Looking like old school at Wimbledon, big servers Raonic, Berdych, and Federer in the SF already, Tsonga making a push and Murray is spending a lot of time complaining.
Does Federer really fall into the category of "big server"?     Efficient, sure.  Effective.. sure.     But while he's certainly a bigger server than Murray or Nadal... he's not much bigger than Nole, really....  am I off base here?

When I think big server I think Raonic, Isner, Karlovic, Sampras, Roddick.. true ace machines...  Byrdych even seems a tier below that.. and Federer even below that

Murray now pwning in the 5th..  but with 4 hours on court... does that factor in to his match vs. the Bird man who has been a finalist here in the past?

Like a reverse bad beat for you.

What are Fed's odds now?  25%?
a 5 set affair seems like it would really drain the old man, and it's not going to be any easier against Raonic despite Federer's really good record against him, and having defeated him twice on grass.

Having said that, he's 10-0 in Wimbledon Semis... and is playing with house money.

If Raonic doesn't serve awesome, he definitely can win...   he'd beat Byrd in the final because that guy doesn't have the mental fortitude to win a GS final... but against Murray he would have a tough time being the crown underdog.. and let's face it.. murray is the better player right now.

Don't forget Goran.  That guy was the quintessential ace machine on grass.

Tsonga is done.  Dude is missing overheads, forehands with open courts.  Too bad.  The 4th set was really good tennis.

I hate Andy Murray's face.

Don't think ever seen a report on Berdych that didn't say great things on his serve.

Maybe use great server instead of big if MPHs is all that makes a big server.  Aces aren't all there is to it.  Guy scrapes a racket on it, it's an unreturnable and not an ace but just as good.  Get them out wide so your second shot has the whole open court, that's a point won by the serve still.

An all Williams Final would be cool at this stage of their careers, likely never happen again.
i hate those matches, I hope it doesn't happen... I think the girls themselves even hate those matches.

What venus has done is downright amazing given her age and health and results over the past several seasons...   I was among those suggesting she should have retired years ago because she was damaging her legacy with poor results.

Sure, that's completely true...  aces are an overrated stat...  % of un-returned serves is a far more valuable stat.

And I think I've seen something similar from you on previous Williams posts. I understand folks think they don't get a real match but in fact I think you do and Venus beating her sister in the Finals and then announcing her retirement would be really sweet or both of them at the same time.

If Venus were to beat Serena in the Final, an announced retirement might actually be the worst thing she can do.  Huge spotlight on the did they or didn't they have predetermined winners.  People who doubted it was happening but could be swayed could certainly be swayed by that.

Best thing for Venus to win and walk away is for Serena to lose her SF.

I haven't seen him play enough to form my own opinion, but every time I do, the commentator is always saying how disappointing Berdych's serve is for a man his size.  He never seems to take over a set on his serve like Raonic can.  I really hope Raonic can take the next step and beat Federer Friday.  He had a real chance in Australia, but fell apart after his injury.

Some of the worst body language, expressions, demeanor on court of anyone.

If you're going to sulk, at least be a cool basspole McEnroe style....    what Murray does wins him no fans and doesn't seem to accomplish anything for him.
I was watching the Murray/Kygrios match and the commentator referred to Murray as "calmness personified."  I had a good laugh.  It doesn't bother me at all, and I enjoy watching Murray play, but I'm not even sure he's calm relative to Kygrios.

Jerk move by Raonic to do that to Federer... he should've wilted after the 3rd set.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure Murray should win this final.. and although I hate him personally, I'm rooting for him to win over the Raonic jerk

Murray is 2-8 in slam finals vs Djokavic(7), Fed(3) and Nadal(0).  But he's 7-6 in Masters 1000 tourney finals against the same three guys.  Rough time to be an all-time great instead of a GOAT candidate.

He's a week younger than Djokavic too, so it's not like he'll even have a solid run at the top after Djoker falls off unless they age differently.

Wow...you almost forget how dominant Steffi Graf was...

Hearing Serena just tied her brought back some of that memory.

I'd still put Navratilova ahead of all though.  She was a beast...and that's with one of the greatest ever, Chris Evert, as competition.

Or forgot how much damage a stab wound could do

Close score but Murray was in firm control the whole way.  Got the chance to add to his major total as the heavy favorite for a change and got the job done.

Djokovic is still way out ahead in the rankings but if you look at the race for the year, Murray just indeed made it a race.  I think Djokovic goes up to 8040 but Murray will get to 7225.

:lmao:  One full match before Djokovic gets another retirement.  Though this time it was after 2 sets instead of a half.  9.5 sets for 5 wins.  Monfils next who is at least playing his best and most controlled tennis in his career.  Easy win today over a guy who had 3 straight 5 setters.

Murray gets Nishikori followed by either Del Potro/Wawrinka.  Tough road for whomever makes the final.

Nadal could never win another match and it doesn't matter, he's got a permanent residence in the head of super fedfans for owning him.

Murray-Nishikori going 5.  Murray led 2 sets to 1 and looking for an early break in 4th set.  During a break point a gong like sound comes and the umpire calls a let (neither player stopped or reacted to the sound until the umpire called let).  Murray hasn't looked good since.  Murray said umpire told them they would keep playing if that sound came again (heard first set) and the umpire's response was that one wasn't as loud.  Weak excuse or not Murray needs to get his head on straight.
