Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (6 Viewers)

I just commented he looks like a bad 80s villain from an eastern European B movie.

every tennis coach I talked to this week (and I talked to a bunch trying to get floppinha set up for the fall)...to a person, hates him.

Kinda funny since he had a cameo in the Expandables 2 that was cut.

I've always been a Nadal fan but I also like Djokovic's game.

Excited to watch both finals.

19yo Fernandez (just turned 19 this week) playing 18yo Radacunu in the US Open final is pretty freaking cool
I think it's awful.  Just another meaningless champion in women's tennis like an ostapenko.  Women's game is full of these 1 or 2 hit wonders.. The top players are not really that great.   It's pathetic and should get record low ratings... Though maybe not as bad as that all Italian final where the gal retired after the match

who pooped on your chest?

dentist?

Maybe you get your wish. Typical Joker brain farts to close out a match.

No idea what you're talking about.

Do you mean Novak's record in 5 setters vs Nadal (2-1) and Federer (4-0).  How is that "brainfarting" to close out matches, especially the ones that really matter?

He's 4-1 vs Stan in 5 setters, btw, and 2-1 vs Murray, so that puts him at 12--3 against the best.

"At the moment if we analyze all the matches in which Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have reached the fifth set, the statistics tell us that the Serb has won 31 times and lost 10 times with an average victory equal to 76%."  Nadal was at 65% and Fed's at 58%.

Novak's 31 wins in 5 set matches  already were the most in history, with only 10 losses (as of last June.)  I believe he's gone at least 5-0 since so he's at aprox 37-10 now or almost 80%.  Nobody's close to that.

The choking to close out matches could not be further from the truth.

If they weren't 18 & 19 I'd agree with you.

As it is, there's a non-trivial chance that one of them (Raducanu IMO) will be the next real deal.

I’ll forever be a Fed #fanboy, but hard to argue with Joker at least being on same level as GOAT.  I’ll make excuses and say things like his (Novak) competition last few years has been subpar compared to Fed and Rafa at their height, but quietly concede you still have to win regardless and that’s what Novak has been doing.

It’s still so odd, I remember when he first came on tour and looked so awkward with his Curious George looking hair, robotic style of play yet somehow not in control of his body either.  Goofy, that’s really all I came away with.  And now he’s one match away from history.  Might as well root for it as he deserves respect for his play

sure. if it was a couple of no-name 20-somethings, who cares.

but to everyone but mr nattering nabob above, an 18yo qualifier not losing a single set en route to the finals playing against another 18yo (I'm not counting 3 days of being 19) who beat 3 top 5 players in the world along the way... yeah- a real yawner. AWFUL.

thank you.

I went to bed after Bronco's post and figured Joker had lost based on it... not running away with the 5th set.

Once Novak was broken in the 4th set, finally, and with Zverev serving out of his mind, Djokovic was better off going for more shots while saving energy for a 5th set against a much younger foe.  That's why you didn't see the rallies we saw in that pivotal 3rd set, one of which consisted of 53 SHOTS -- the most in the entire tournament for ANY match.

So one could say Joker's "brain farts" in the 4th actually were key in him steam-rolling Zverev in the 5th -- like he's done more than anyone in the history of the sport.

It was smart.  If Federer had done something similar, "brain farts" would've been interpreted as genius instead.

Also a fed fanboy for life, but if he wins tomorrow... or wins another major sometime next year (likely),  there will be no statistical argument that backs Roger or Ralph as the GOAT.    He'll have everything you need...   he just doesn't have the fan support or the class...  but he's the GOAT.    What will be interesting is..  if he wins tomorrow... and thus has nothing more to chase... will he still come strong next year or will he step off the gas?    I mean something tells me he'd want to add a buffer one or 2 in case Ralph recovers and can nab another FO

A shame this doesn’t get more pub..

Raducanu looking on point.🏸

Sad that Novak has to go up against Week 1 NFL tomorrow.

This is like watching Ali, Gretzky, MJ at their best..He’s just built different, glad to watch him play...Undeniable GOAT after tomorrow .

That was a lovely soft overhead from Raducanu there.  Great touch

ETA:  All credit to Raducanu.  She dictated play more than Fernandez did today.  From qualifier to US Open champ without losing a set.  Amazing.

this is the fourth time I've watched Fernandez this Open...and she was (understandably) at her tightest and most error prone. She had been consistent and icy in the other matches.

but wow Raducanu...amazing run and well played final. and a bit of a looker too, which is going to help with the endorsements.

I mean I'd be willing to wager that Raducanu never wins another major... even though she just won the whole effing thing without losing a set after qualifying to get in..  which is absurd.     Trust me... another Ostapenko...    she'll lose in the first round next year.

so?

didn't make this any less amazing- even if the actual tennis was a bit nervy and not tip top.

It's so impressive that it makes me think the entire wta must have been on their period this week and this gal is new to the tour and thus not in sync so she felt good and crushed

so instead of explaining it, you minimize and denigrate the achievements of two young women by invoking menstruation. huh.

Look I'll eat my words if this gal is the real deal and has a nice career.  But if what is far more likely to happen happens, which is her disappearing and never getting to another major final like so many wta one hit wonders then I'll stand by my statement that she just caught lightning for 2.5 weeks weeks in a week field.    That said, she made monster money this week. You can't take that away, that victory is forever.. good for her. Hope she saves most of the money

Women younger than Raducanu when they won their first major:

Graf, Serena Williams, Sanchez Vicario, Sharapova, Austin, Seles, Hingis.

All of them won at least one more, and all but Austin won at least three more.

Next two youngest after Raducanu were Mandlikova (4) and Kuznetsova (2).

I'm taking the over.

Every year I am stunned they put their final up against week 1 of the nfl. Just incredible to me.
I will never get it.  Idiotic.  Tennis thinks they are still in the 80's.  Or that it's coming back.

Who doesn't know basic marketing at that level?

So dumb.  Move it up ONE week, geniuses.

I thought the women's final was superb and the quality of play was very, very high.  Raducanu appears to be the real deal.

I don't care if both of the women's finalists are one-offs. It made the tournament more interesting having both of these kids advancing all the way to the finals, each in their own manner and they each played great tennis along the way. Watching something historic like this is great, especially when the quality is still high.

Part of it was driven by having bet (and won) on Raducanu from the round of 32 on.  But I was generally interested in the final, and I'm a little smitten by Emma.  I watched the entire final, flipping to college football during commercials.  Never though I would say that.  What a run by Emma and Leylah was a princess in her post match interview.

Maybe.    But I'm going with dream 2 weeks....  and even if she never wins again she'll always have that run and hopefully that money and some endorsement cash since she's attractive.

Loses in first round at Indian Wells to #100 in straight sets, was never competitive

Let's check back in a couple years and see.

And it seems like you have a lot riding on her failure for some reason.
Yeah I've got a grand on "never wins another major".   I got so mad at people proclaiming her the next big thing when the entire wta for years now has been full of these flukes

Mad? Whoa. Why would you care what happens with her career or what other people think might happen with it...especially to take a negative- and from the outside, bordering nasty- stance on it?
