Tennis - Sinner accepts three month ban - won't miss Roland Garros (1 Viewer)

From the collarbone down, Nick Kyrgios is practically a perfect tennis player. I think he's the best athlete who ever chose tennis, better than Sampras or even Lew Hoad. But his head is full of eels, and it's his neck's job to hold that still so he can play.

Of course, none of that matters to Djokerbot. Djokerbot take trophy.

he was 2-0 vs Joker previously.
Long time ago, I don’t know how Kyrgios was back then but a guy that out of control presently couldn’t beat a guy like Joker. He’s over there yelling at his family and telling them to stand up and screaming about a fan and whatever other nonsense is distracting him and Joker just goes about his business. Night and day.

Again I think Kyrgios is misunderstood.  We all find motivation in different ways... Kyrgios has always been the black hat, the underdog, the scapegoat.

Fairly obvious now, over the years - he uses that.  Not even debateable that that is a chip he uses.

Couldn't beat a guy like Joker?  I don't know, maybe.  Maybe he couldn't have reached a Wimbledon final without it.

If I recall, Joker broke Kyrgios in the second and the third down 0-40 in each game. That's a Kyrgios collapse. Cost him the match.

You can say that his chirping and screaming is part of his game. Fine. He needs to evolve. A little bit of a tighter mental game and this match may have played out differently. Funny thing is, dude seems pretty together in post game commentary. Body language is a mess. But he's very self aware.

If you played tennis or any sport, this is a tale old as time.

He is talented as anyone... but perhaps not suited mentally for consistent greatness.  Today, more than ever, you see the difference maker being the professional/mature/consistent mind.

Kyrgios seems comfortable in that skin so who am I?  The handshake at the end speaks volumes.

Yeah I thought his post-match comments and the way he handled himself was great and demonstrated that he's self-aware. Just seems to lack the ability in a tense moment to rein it in but he does seem capable of getting over it.

Currently ranked 605th in the world; did not play between Wimbledon 2021 (first round loss) and the 2022 Championships (also 1R L.) Since then - 1R loss in Cincinnati, 2R loss in Montreal.

In 2021 she reached the Semifinals of Australia and the round of of 16 at Roland Garros. She was ranked 8th in July 2021, then fell all the way to 1204th after 50 weeks off before she started this last hurrah.

If she wins tonight she’ll be the 4th woman to win in her teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. She is already the only lady with GS match wins in four different decades.

Semi finalist at the 2020 US Open but it’s doubtful she’ll make week 2 of the fortnight this year. But fans love it, she’s enormously popular at Flushing Meadow. I only saw Billie Jean, Martina, and Steffi on the small screen. Serena is the best woman’s player I’ve seen in person.

ETA: last GS title was the 2017 Australian

Serena’s final US Open about to begin
floppinha and I went to watch the final round of the qualifiers on Friday... total blast- and free. next year we'll try to go earlier in the week and pick somebody to follow... and also look at the schedule of practices for the better players who were all walking around to get to their practice courts (that were open to the public to watch).

we saw a little of jeanjean (who lost to Coco today) and another frenchie who we'll be keeping an eye on tomrrow.

Serena hopefully can finish this one out without burning too much energy. she looks slower- which makes sense- but I don't see how she'll be able to advance too far in this with he diminished mobility. don't get me wrong- still hits the hell out of the ball and looking good... but a better player will get on the offensive and make her work more than this woman has.

she's the best that's ever been... so you got to see the GOAT.

plus she's playing doubles with her sister, so who knows?

BL's post reminding me that I got to see John Mac's first ever pro tournament live when I was a kid (something in SF in the 70s? or early 80s). already yelling so loud we could hear him in the cheap seats.

woop- and Serena just won pretty easily.

Moment far too big for Kontaveit.

Serena is the best female player ever. She's also impossible to root for, so I'll be glad when she gets beat.

I love her. so... slightly possible to root for.

loved her response to "you just beat the #2 player in the world- how did you manage that?"... "well... I'm pretty good too...?"

I thought she'd fall apart against a quality player who would move her around. she looked so static in the first round match- not even trying to get to stuff she used to gobble up. but wow- she was moving around the court pretty damn well- especially for somebody in their 60s.

Yep, unquestionably the goat. How can you love her? Do you remember when she stole the spotlight from Naomi Osaka and scarred that girl forever? She has an ugly personality on the court. She is a bully to line judges.

I know people who love Tiger too (including my own mother :) ) so if you just love greatness and ignore behavior I guess I get that. But I hate bullies, so....yeah.

Burel was the woman we watched win her qualifier in a tie-break (after a decent sized rain delay). She beat the 25th ranked player in straight sets yesterday... so we'll make a point of watching her again. decent player, but with the softest 2nd serve I've ever seen in the pro game.

Floppinha is a big Coco fan (got to do a NB press related thing with her before last years' open)- so hopefully she'll make a good run. feel like she's been regularly going pretty deep in tourneys over the last bunch of months. Coco vs Serena would be all kinds of awesome.

Floppinha has her 2nd 12u L7 tourney this weekend after aging out of 10u. lost in the 2nd round to a crusher of a 9yo in her 1st 12u tournament a few weeks ago.

this is the thing people tend to hang their hatred on... I don't know much about it. I thought Naomi herself disavowed that take though.... ? I cuold be wrong.

I love her ability for sure. I love her confidence- I mean, she designs and dresses herself to look like the homeless crazy woman who sings loudly to herself in the median of our street... and clearly dgaf. she doesn't defer to anybody... I admire that, even if she'll bristle some feathers by being harsh towards those around her getting in her way.

I hope my daughter can take some of that with her (she's way too conscientious to people around her- letting herself get steamrolled in various situations). I tend to be that way too...while my wife is in the "don't care about the world's feelings" camp. I think you can ride the line and take both.

Probably the difference between NYC and rural America. I see a bully, you see confidence. Agree to disagree, and that's ok.

Serena is a bit like Michael Jordan in that the thing that made them so good at their sport is also the thing that seems to make them pretty unlikable off the court. I never had much of an opinion one way or the other about Serena until the Osaka match where she acted like a toddler. The best part about that is that she screamed 1834 times at the umpire that she wasn't being coached, and then when interviewed right after the match, her coach admitted that he was coaching her. LOL

Tomljanovic has been incredible from what I have seen. Great mental toughness, considering someone yells out Serena seemingly every other serve of hers right before she starts it. I guess the ump is too afraid to tell the crowd to follow proper etiquette and not yell when a player is beginning their serve.

Gusty win by Tomljanovic, overcoming the elements and the crowd.

Williams was done in by the second set. Had she put it away early after going up 4-0, she might have had a better shot in the third set, but the second set took it out of her. She was on fumes most of that last set.

Great match. Tomijanovich definitely deserved that W.

It's clear her game plan as the match wore on was to keep points going long to wear Williams out. Gusty effort by Williams, but her age caught up to her.

What did you expect the crowd was going to do? It was one of - if not the - greatest player of all time's last match. An American. In New York.

Yea they were loud. But so what? Adversity to deal with.

I get. I am just saying, it was a gutsy effort by Tomljanovic. A lot of players would have crumbled under those circumstances.

I realize Serena has lost her fastball and doesn't move very well these days, but how is Tomljanovic not ranked higher? She looked fantastic tonight.

3:00 is unusual on the women's side of the draw. Very entertaining.
