God I wish.So we usually host or go to my parents. Due to a variety of things we are considering having dinner with just my wife, daughter and myself.
Anyone else just do the single family?
We are. We usually head up to New Hampshire but we lost all motivation to do anything this year. We probably won't even make a Turkey. So we usually host or go to my parents. Due to a variety of things we are considering having dinner with just my wife, daughter and myself.

We've done a family vacation the past couple years. Don't get many opportunities where the whole family can escape for a full week. Last year we did Tulum, MX, this year we're doing the carrib side of Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo, where the jungle meets the beach. Riding horses on the beach, surfing lessons, canopy zip-line, SUP tour, fishing ,snorkeling, lobstering, etc. Place is dirt cheap too. Two bedroom beach side cabana with pool and full breakfast for about $100/nt.Anyone else just do the single family?

We'll eat a turkey dinner the weekend after we get back with my in-laws.
I'll bring the Stove Top.Gonna have about 6-14 family members over...depending who says yes.
Best holiday evah
My family would always have a huge get together but since a cousin of mine passed away things never were exactly the same. All the families kinda do their own thing. Now all the cousins have in laws and kids and pretty hard to host something so big.
Will probably also extend invitation to other family to come for evening coffee/food/booze get together
whoa! I spent a week there in college in the 80s... one of my favorite vacations ever- just beautiful. didn't have any of the things you're mentioning... just gorgeous, empty beaches and the jungle. bought weed by the fistful for peanunts and was asked to buy a plot of land near the beach for 10k.E-Z Glider said:We've done a family vacation the past couple years. Wow, you were ahead the times! Sounds like its still a pretty remote/uncrowded vacation destination due to the difficulties of getting there and a somewhat unsavory reputation (though its supposedly gotten much better over the last couple of years). There are so many awesome things/activites/tours to do in that area, I dont even know where to start. I was "thisclose" to pulling the trigger on an overnight tour to stay with an indigenous tribe in the mountains where you take an hour-long ride up some river in a canoe made out of a tree and they do tribal dances/rituals at night around a fire. My family finally stepped in and made me stop planning things.whoa! oddly enough, the wife was talking about CR just last night and I brought puerta viejo up- she's researching now for feb break. how are you getting there? fly to san jose and car rental your way over there?
can't wait to hear about your trip!
one of my buddies was a surfer- his friends had found a surf break near punta uva, IIRC. just googling it now.... we stayed in a spot on playa negra, just outside puerta viejo. rooms with bunks, bathrooms down the "hall" (outdoors)... basically outhouses. if we payed $20/night, I'd be surprised. the guy who owned the place was awesome- took us on a couple of excursions- jungle hike, and river raft where we just swam into panama for s&gs. they also had a bit of a wildlife/monkey refuge there too (mostly just random animals they had saved along the way). also provided that weed... ended up with so much of it, I unknowingly brought some back with me onto the plane in my pocket!... got busted at customs not for that, but for bringing a ziplock bag of the black sand from playa negra. I didn't find the weed in my pocket until I got back home. *phew*!Wow, you were ahead the times! We are flying into San Jose and taking a 4-5 hour bus ride to Puerto Viejo ($10 one way). They offer a shuttle service for $245, but I kinda like the adventure of public transportation in foreign countries. Ive been told there is no need for a car once in PV. Walking and biking are the primary means of transportation.
Fistfuls, you say?
Mission accomplishedSIL and her husband live about a block away. We'll walk over there, I'll have a bottle of scotch in hand, my wife a bottle of wine. thank you gifts for having us over. I'll then proceed to drink about 1/2 of that bottle of scotch and stumble back home.
