The 100 Greatest “New Wave” songs 1. Everybody Wants to Rule the World-Tears for Fears (2 Viewers)

OK, so I have a student teacher and he has taken over my class. So I have a little extra time during the day now

Inspired by Tim and Krista, I have decided to come up with a list of my top 100 hardcore songs. I know that is not in everyones wheelhouse and some might not ever click the thread, but it was an interesting undertaking.

I will wait for Tim to be done before I fire up the thread.

I think it's great that you're going to rise above any potential competition here.

Always good to go in a different direction. I'm fairly sure nobody else is going to beat me to my eventual list of top 100 Throbbing Gristle songs.

Fingers crossed for "Puttin' on the Ritz".

To be clear, I don’t think London Calling is bad: it’s a solid record with a handful of good tunes. But when I see talk of it being one of the best albums of the 80’s, or the best like in that RS article, I can’t help but chuckle at how overrated critics have made it.
Maybe you under-rate it? It's all subjective really. If you named 10 better records from the 80s, what would make them better?

Not a fan of the Femmes at all (they “headlined” with Sugarcubes, PiL, and New Order way back when in Milwaukee). I mute their songs every time they come on First Wave. I do appreciate their taste in other music based on a recent Lust for Lists they did.

23. “Blister In the Sun” Violent Femmes (1983, from Violent Femmes

https://youtu.be/8YdQBkxf4kU

My girlfriend she’s at the end, she is starting to cry

what are the “big hands” anyhow?
GREAT song. Quinessential "new wave" band in terms of stretching what that genre even means. To me, "new wave" really just means "alternative music from the early 80s". It was a (wait for it) New Wave of music pouring in from England, that some US bands and others jumped on the bandwagon of. New Wave doesn't have to mean "synths" and doesn't need to mean "not popular" or "obscure".

Violent Femme's first album is one of my favorites of all time. Nice pick.

I always liked the violent femmes tunes, but never loved them.

That said, blister is iconic and worthy of most lists imo. Doesn't help wash the bad karma taste out, but ....

Not A Fan .   Next.
I used to feel that way too. Later in life I realized it was because in junior high, the kind of hot young male English teacher would play his guitar and sing that song (first time i heard it) and all the girls I liked would swoon. Once I realized that, I overcame it and ended up loving the song.

Maybe you had a hot young male ELA teacher who played guitar too?

No, my 8th grade english teacher, Mrs Brakesman, was in Playboy the year before.  My memories are better than yours.

The Femmes and The Police pretty much sum up my freshman year in college.  1992-1993.  Man, those were the days.

Since #40, there are only three I don't like.  Timmy's going to Tim and that's OK.  Each of our Top 25's would be vastly different.
True, but I question how many here, if any, would include "Do They Know It's Christmas" or "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" on their 100 Greatest New Wave Songs list?

Don't get me wrong, I think "Wake Me Up" is a great pop song, which was what it was intended to be. But the fact that even if you classify Wham as a New Wave band (doubtful but arguable based on their earlier stuff) that doesn't make them doing this turn it into a New Wave song. Andrew Ridgley (who really was the brains of the band) determined they wouldn't be a success continuing the teenage angst theme of "Young Guns" and "Bad Boys" so they switched to lightweight pop and as they say, the rest is history.

22. “Boys Don’t Cry” The Cure (1980, from Boys Don’t Cry

https://youtu.be/Q460cEwJgCI

The title song to a pretty incredible album. It didn’t really become a radio staple until about 5 years later after the band was known for a few other songs. But this remains one of their best, and one of the finest pop songs of the era.

Saw them for the first time almost four years ago.  Great show.   Wasn't into them much back in the day. Am now. Like about a dozen more of their songs over this one. This one, a surprise to me, was the encore song.

After some recent missteps, an excellent choice.

Not sure I would call it a pop song exactly, but I would imagine that most of The Cure fans would list as their favorite or close to it, although oddly in a Rolling Stone readers poll of their top 10 it was voted only #10 (?).

I think it is safe to list of one of my favorites of theirs which shouldn't make your list, the quirky, almost novelty sounding "The Love Cats". Here is a fun TV appearance in 1984 taken from a rather weird german TV Show "Bananas"

Thank you for not choosing Just Like Heaven (I guess the door is still open) with this pick. Big fan. I’ve never seen them live, but would love to. Not gonna list my favorites bc there are many.

WTF is that? Wow that’s odd.

Expecting Just Like Heaven to be top 20 now.

this song could've been anywhere from #22 to #1 and I would've been happy.

Perfectly succinct, energetic song (and album) from my tied-for-1st-favorite band of this era (tied with the Smiths and Tears For Fears)

Both early Cure, and the Violent Femmes, could be called post-punk but, not surprisingly, I'd claim that the Venn Diagram of New Wave and Post-Punk overlaps MASSIVELY.

Once you admit the school board fired you for that, we can get to the root of the matter.

My sophomore year Sadie Hawkins Dance date would later appear in Playboy so I made up for it later.

Wait a sec... He included wake me up on this?

As far as I'm concerned, there are a ton of Cure songs he could go with...including Boys don't cry- great song, great band. And only saw them live once recently, at the RnRoll hall of fame ceremony. They were by far the best live band of the night.

Sad but true. :(

93. “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” Wham!
