The 100 Greatest “New Wave” songs 1. Everybody Wants to Rule the World-Tears for Fears (2 Viewers)

odds that i bumped into you at Pier Platters are looking kinda solid.

the Elysian was a den of debauchery, and thise back room blues jams were legendary ... it's a bistro now
Yes - I know Pier Platters well. I was there a little after the time frame you listed but close enough.

The blues bands at Elysian were awesome. There were a few nights we'd push all the tables against the walls for more dance room.

If you've seen the movie Sleepers the scene where the shoot Kevin Bacon takes place in the bar area and then in the backroom (which they have set up in the movie as a dining area).

45. “Don’t Change” INXS (1982, from Shabooh Shoobah

https://youtu.be/sLm3Khusq_8

This is another band that kind of annoyed me, particularly their later material in the decade- “What You Need”, “Listen Like Thieves”, etc. But I did like the early stuff, especially this song. Still do.
My manager was also a part time DJ who influenced me and others to follow his footsteps.  He had an early copy of the album Shabooh Shoobah and also had Men At Work's Business As Usual both Australian bands.  He said Men At Work would be the bigger band and I told him it would be INXS.

The One Thing (INXS - Shabooh Shoobah - 01 The one Thing (Lyrics) ) was the single in the US that was charting but didn't approach how hot Men At Work with Business As Usual and chart topper singles like Down Under.

I knew INXS would break out but had to wait till 1987 when Kick came out.

Good call with Don't Change.

yep, with Janice Soprano (Aida Turturro) stuffin' her face and gettin' all hysterical on the 2 glasses of wine 🍷

i used to work at U.S. Testing circa that era ('88-'91), was located right before the Willow Ave. bridge into Weehaken (the one over El Pico & Dykes Lumber) ... custodian from there used to also bartend down the Elks and the Elysian ... tipped a few pints with some of the town's down and dirtiest - and that Elk has the biggest set of brass balls this side of Blake (Glengarry).

the old Maxwells, Kelly's, Lady Jane's, Brauhaus, the Wilton, Mario's ... great lil' drinking town.

oh, and the music scene was killer.   saw more bands over there than i can swing a dead cat at  - the best show was Babes in Toyland (Kat Bjelland  ).

YLT was pretty damn solid any time we did catch 'em.
[look at me]

My band opened for YLT at Maxwell's back in the early 90s.

[/look at me]

:)

LOOK AT ME

I played with The Ramones at CBGBs

Not played after them or before them, WITH them

(well CJ Ramone at least)

One of my all time favorite videos with the band's entrance, arriving and jumping out out of the back of a pickup truck, and then jumping back and leaving as the song is ending.

INXS’ Live Baby Live concert video at Wembley is amazing. If you’re a fan, I highly recommend it.
this band was tight, energetic, talented and wrote kick ### songs, full stop.

and, yes, they went from a  New Wave to a Pop band, and that's ok. :)

there was some talk in another thread about the Audience Channel going away (or moving to yet another paid service - the new HBO Plus or something like that).

Anyway, a 90s (I think) INXS concert was on it recently - may still be able to catch them.  They ran the commercial for it 100s of times.

Yup. Saw it on the Audience Channel and on the big screen.

Seemed to me like there was no way they would come back without Hutchence imo. Very sad.
Brooke whatshername looked great though. Wife and I had a fall down drunk drinking game for that where every time she said "rocker" we had to drink. Liver damage every episode.

44. “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” Simple Minds (1984, from The Breakfast Club

https://youtu.be/CdqoNKCCt7A

Obviously an iconic selection. I liked this guy’s voice but the song itself never did much for me. It does work as the opening of the movie very well, though. I had to put it in the top 50 but this is about as high as I could bear.

Like this song and the band. Can you believe Billy Idol passed on it? It’s the reason why it’s the last song on his greatest hits album. They’re still pretty good live. This song is a truly iconic 80s song. Not my favorite by a lot though (no surprise to most here).

Recording history of this song is fascinating.

Recording history

The song was written and composed by producer Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff while scoring The Breakfast Club. Both were Simple Minds fans and wrote the song with the band in mind. Forsey played a demo for the band's label, A&M Records, who invited him to meet the band backstage after one of their "Tour du Monde" shows in the U.S. However, A&M did not notify Simple Minds that Forsey would appear, and the band declined the offer of the song despite Forsey's enthusiasm for them.[2]

Forsey next offered "Don't You (Forget About Me)" to Bryan Ferry, then to Billy Idol, whom Forsey was producing at the time, but both declined.[2][a] The record company suggested Corey Hart, who had a hit at the time with "Sunglasses at Night", but Forsey did not think Hart would be the right singer for the song.[3] Fixx lead singer Cy Curnin also passed.

According to Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr, the band was reluctant to record the song, as they felt they should only record their own material. "We are Simple Minds - we don't do songs that sound like Simple Minds. We are Simple Minds. We do our own songs," he recalled to the BBC in 2018. The band was also were frustrated that their attempts to find success in the U.S. market had not succeeded in getting them significant radio airplay, and did not see how recording the song would turn out any better.[2]

The band relented after persuasion from A&M and from Chrissie Hynde, Kerr's wife at the time, and after receiving a phone call from Forsey in which he reiterated his admiration for the band.[4] According to one account, the band "rearranged and recorded 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' in three hours in the north London studio and promptly forgot about it,"[5] believing that it would be a throwaway song on the soundtrack to a forgettable movie.[2]

In the process of recording, Simple Minds added such as Kerr's "la lala" vocal fills. They then resumed work on Once Upon a Time, their next album. However, some of the band members had realized they had recorded something with genuine commercial potential.[2]

I know a lot of the early Simple Minds fans hated the commercial nature of it, but Don't You (Forget About Me) is a really good tune.

I didn't really pay attention to INXS until the release of Kick, which made me a fan for life, but I eventually went back and got into some of the early stuff.  Don't Change, in particular, is a helluva tune, as is Original Sin.

It’s one of the first songs I think of when recalling 80s pop songs. I still like it.

It was me and my college gf's favorite song before starting an 8 hr road trip to LA. By the time we got there we were sick of it. It was overplayed that much, but yeah, good tune.

I don't remember ever seeing this video, it's great, the song is pure 80s, beautiful. Trying to figure out who Hutchence looks like with the shorter hair; I always think of him with the shoulder length wavy. He looks like someone else besides him.

Great, great tune but I think it actually would've been better if Billy Idol had done it  :kicksrock:

Speaking of Billy Idol.

He was in NYC leading a campaign to not idle your car

Billy doesnt idle was being chanted at city hall. Sure, we all saw that coming

Personally, I would put a Billy sung song at number 1 on this list.

Can you believe we have not seen a single song by Billy Idol, the Jam, Talk Talk, or Big Audio Dynamite with over half this list complete? 😠

43. “Hungry Like the Wolf” Duran Duran (1982, from Rio

https://youtu.be/oJL-lCzEXgI

Dark in the city, night is a wire. Seen from the subway, Earth is afire. Or something like that. I wrote it from memory so excuse me if I missed a lyric. But what does it even mean? And why is he hungry like THE wolf, rather than A wolf?

How many can the house name? We got Phil Collins, and ...

- Don Henley
- Kelly Keagy, Night Ranger
- Levon Helm
- Sheila E
Mickey Dolenz

Also Karen Carpenter - great drummer, although I don't think she sang/drummed concurrently very often.

I heard the campaign on the radio on my drive home last night - hysterical.

Mike Levine - Triumph. Sang lead on some songs.
Actually it was Gil Moore, but yeah 🍁
Yup. Read Wikipedia too quickly! Personally I like more of the songs that Rik sings, but there are few bands that have multiple singers that can hold a lead. Triumph is an underrated Canadian Trio, :headbang: but they were definitely NOT New Wave! ;)  .

Big fan of Triumph.  I still listen to their tunes.  It has held up well for me but I’m a metal head and have a questionable taste in music.

Always thought that overall music-wise Rush was better, but Rik had a far better voice than Geddy. Magic Power is one of my favorite songs of all time.

I'll have to check it out, I was never a big INXS fan but loved this song https://youtu.be/fydm01xmeqk (heaven sent) from a surf video and it was only years later that I realized that it was INXS that sang it. Since then I've been a fan and am still catching up on all their early stuff.

Don't say a prayer for me now. Save it 'til the morning after.
