The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #81. Mulan (9 Viewers)

I've seen 1 of 4 movies so far. Always heard that while Kilmer's performance in The Doors was good, the movie itself was...meh. Roger Ebert's review includes this great line, "Watching the movie is like being stuck in a bar with an obnoxious drunk, when you’re not drinking."
yeah watching it sober is not fun
I watched it on shrooms and it wasn't much better. Kilmer was great in it, though.

I really liked both of the Oliver Stone submissions listed and would likely have them a "little" higher. (no pun intended)

96. The Waterboy (1998)

Directed by: Frank Coraci

Starring: Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates, Fairuza Balk, Henry Winkler

Synopsis:
Stuttering waterboy Bobby Boucher becomes a star linebacker.

My mama says that alligators are ornery because they got all them teeth and no toothbrush - Adam Sandler as Bobby Boucher

Adam Sandler, upon graduating from SNL, became a movie star in the 90s with a bunch of hit films which are all uneven IMO: Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, The Waterboy. They all have really funny moments and a whole lot of filler. I think this one is the best of the bunch, which is why it makes the list and the others narrowly miss out. For my money it’s the most consistently entertaining.

And I'm glad to see that JFK won't be here - that movie is just awful.
That’s more or less how I felt about this movie. It’s all about Kilmer’s portrayal of Morrison, everyone else is a side character that doesn’t have a whole lot interesting to do.

I mean.... Waterboy's inclusion is all good, but to omit Happy Gilmore from the 100 seems a little short-sighted, JMHO. HG is kind of a cult classic. Maybe not even "cult"...

Billy Madison gave us the “I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul” scene. Deserves to be in the top 100 for that alone.

To me, Sandler movies had diminishing returns after that.

I like his chemistry with Barrymore, so I still really like those two movies. That still leaves a lot of crap like Little Nicky and Zohan type movies to trudge through.

Somethings wrong with Tim’s medula oblongata. Travesty if true. Happy Gilmore is the best golf movie ever

Ive really enjoyed 3 of the 5 to date that ive seen.
Showgirls, Any Given Sunday and The Waterboy.

We are gonna get tons of snooty drama Oscar bait tripe arent we?

Only 1 Sandler movie seems a mistake. Im not the biggest fan, but one seems to a gross under

96. The Waterboy (1998)
I doubt I'd include The Waterboy as I think Sandler's speaking schtick wears thin in this film, and Henry Winkler is absolutely atrocious in it, but can't argue too much about #96 and it's not terrible or anything. No Happy Gilmore seems like a real oversight, though - one of the best comedies of the 90s. I also think the Wedding Singer is decent and significantly better than The Waterboy.

Looking forward to the list though.

I really liked The Doors. thought it did a great job telling their story in a compelling way- driection and especially acting by Val (agree about favorite role by him), but also Mclaughlan. Stone is hit or miss for me, but thought this one was solid.
Yeah Mclaughlan was perfect as Ray Manzerick. Kevin Dillon was also great as their dummer.
The sidelining of the other members is why you can't remember John Densmore's name!!!!!!!!

50 First Dates is really funny and very sweet. You’re right about their chemistry.

I’m the weirdo that thinks Punch Drunk Love is Sandlers best movie though.

PDL is a movie with Adam Sandler in it but isn't really an "Adam Sandler movie," if you get my drift.

I didn't really consider that or others like Uncut Gems when posting the above, for that reason.

Funny People is another that i like but is not his usual shtick.

Funny People would have been a great 90-minute movie. Unfortunately it was an hour longer than that.

I don't disagree there either. That is basically every Apatow movie.

Dude has Peter Jackson-level editing abilities.

That one with the space spider was surprisingly good. Really like punch drunk love too

It’s happy Gilmore or Billy Madison for his best though and it’s not close

Gilmore>Madison>Big Daddy>Waterboy

Airheads was pretty good too.

Didn't really care for The Wedding Singer and never seen Punch Drunk Love but I'll fix that.

Happy Gilmore
That’s My Boy
The Wedding Singer
Big Daddy
Grown Up’s

My top 5.

And I really like Uncut Gems as his non “Sandler” kinda movie.

95. Army of Darkness (1993)

Directed by: Sam Raimi

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davitz

Synopsis:
Ash must save the Middle Ages from a horde of undead.

All right you primitive screw heads listen up! You see this? This is my BOOMSTICK! The 12 gauge double barreled Remington. - Bruce Campbell as Ash.

This is the third and best film of the “Evil Dead” trilogy, mainly because it introduces a “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” element. The dialogue is silly (almost Monty Pythonish), the special effects pretty awful, but the overall effect is about as fun as any movie from the decade. This is great stuff.

94. Les Miserables (1998)

Directed by: Billie August

Starring: Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, Claire Danes, Uma Thurman

Synopsis:
Film adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel.

I am the man you want. I am Jean Valjean. - Liam Neeson as Jean ValJean

There have been so many adaptations of this story, including the Broadway musical and the recent film of the Broadway musical. Even more recently I watched a TV miniseries version starring Dominic West and Lily Collins and it was fine. But of all the versions I’ve seen I think this one is the best. A big part of the reason is Geoffrey Rush who seemed born to play the role of Inapector Javert. But the whole cast is excellent. Well scripted as well by the novelist Rafael Yglesias. Just a superb period film.

In that rare moment where a broken clock finds a nut, I agree 100% with Tim's comments on this one. I really enjoyed the story this way.
