Hey spotlighting! Tim is only at #14 on the countdown.Much less Class of 1984 - Oscar caliber performance by Salami. It's no Slumdog Millionaireit also may be the greatest film about high school of all time- certainly it would have to be at or near the top of any such list.
Also, the guy who played Carl also played the "bo-hunk" that Sam's older sister was marrying in Sixteen Candles.Speaking of Carl, it took many watches before I caught this at the beginning.Truth be told, Carl the janitor was the only person who commanded respect in the flick.Because when you get older you realize what punks high school kids can be. It had to be satisfying to watch when it happened IRL too. This is not the best movie of the decade. But it might be, with one exception coming up a little later, the most satisfying to watch.
Everyone I know loves this movie. I find it terrible and it was tough to watch it until the end, but I did. I didn’t buy anything about it as far as the relationships Hackman had with the woman or the team. It seemed so contrived.13. Hoosiers (1986)
Directed by: David Anspaugh
Starring: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper
Synopsis: Small town high school basketball team competes for the Indiana state championship.
My practices aren’t designed for your enjoyment. - Gene Hackman as Coach Norman Dale
Simply put, one of the greatest sports movies of all time. A joy to watch no matter how many times I see it. The characters are great, Gene Hackman is great, Dennis Hopper steals every scene he’s in (even scenes where he doesn’t say anything- for instance when he’s watching the first game and Hackman decides to go with 4 on the court to teach his players a lesson- Hopper just grins and it’s a great moment.)
This is not the best movie of the decade. But it might be, with one exception coming up a little later, the most satisfying to watch.
I am told that it was. My mother-in-law was from the next town over and attended the semifinal game. I know it’s just me, obviously since so many love it but I don’t get this movie.
That’s not to say it doesn’t deserve to be up there. As I said everyone I know loves it.
What part do you think was contrived?I have never seen it because everything I read about it made it seem like it was contrived.
This is an odd movie for me to judge. I'm the target demographic for it. I have no problem with romantic storylines, but I never bought the Hackman/Hershey pairing. Hopper's great and steals the show.13. Hoosiers (1986)

I didn’t see it. But from what I could glean, basically everything. Inspirational underdog sports stories are generally not interesting to me.What part do you think was contrived?I have never seen it because everything I read about it made it seem like it was contrived.

I dislike most sports movies for this reason.
I just wanted to be whatever character got with Molly Ringwald in the movies.Man, we thought Judd Nelson's character was the epitome of cool. We all wanted to be him.
This movie is one that was the backdrop to my MS years. Probably watched it a dozen times at least.
So many guys had a thing for her, but I wasn’t one of them. Probably more Team Ally Sheedy, mainly in War Games and Bad Boys.I just wanted to be whatever character got with Molly Ringwald in the movies.Man, we thought Judd Nelson's character was the epitome of cool. We all wanted to be him.

I was a sucker for the red hair. One of my earliest tv crushes was when we watched Anne of Green Gables in school. So many guys had a thing for her, but I wasn’t one of them. In real life, that underdog Milan High School team beat Oscar Robertson’s Crispus Attucks High School during the state playoffs and I think that was in the state semifinals.I am told that it was. My mother-in-law was from the next town over and attended the semifinal game. She still talks about it.

IIRC Ally Sheedy almost got the Claire part instead. We wouldn’t have known the difference if she had, but just seems strange to think of Ally in that role.So many guys had a thing for her, but I wasn’t one of them. Yup. Never ever did nor ever will understand the love for Molly Ringwald. Always felt like we were being forced to find her beautiful. Team Ally for me too.
IMO the only misstep is the silliness that is Emilio's dance routine.Maybe I needed to see it back in the day, because I somehow never saw Hoosiers until around 10 years ago or so and thought it was solid, but nothing special.
The Breakfast Club, on the other hand, is all kinds of great. This is THE classic dramedy, a perfect symmetry of comedy and drama.

To be clear when I used “contrived” I wasnt talking about any of the basketball game moments. I didn’t feel any chemistry between Hackman and Hershey and how they fell in love so quick (in the movie no idea if that’s exactly how it happened in real life) and the relationship he had with the team. It seemed like they bought in for no real reason.Hoosiers is one of my top 10 all time.
The actors can actually play basketball, the acting is superb up and down and it's inspiring.
And for you cynics, it's loosely based on a true story so not quite as contrived as you'd think.
That whole sequence is rather bizarre and a bit odd, but it was the 80s, so you just had to go with it.IMO the only misstep is the silliness that is Emilio's dance routine.Maybe I needed to see it back in the day, because I somehow never saw Hoosiers until around 10 years ago or so and thought it was solid, but nothing special.

samethought it was solid, but nothing special.
Her Claire in Breakfast Club is actually a better character for being imperfect . It makes her insecurity more believable.Never ever did nor ever will understand the love for Molly Ringwald. Always felt like we were being forced to find her beautiful

I'm concerned about you. That’s not to say it doesn’t deserve to be up there. As I said everyone I know loves it.
No, I'm with you, Dr.8...I re-watched it with my older boys a few years ago and it's not that great.
It's not nearly as bad as Rudy, though, which I think is a steaming pile of elephant manure.

Two surprising things about this movie. 1) Michael J Fox is in it (credits show him as Michael Fox)Much less Class of 1984 - Oscar caliber performance by Salami. It's no Slumdog Millionaireit also may be the greatest film about high school of all time- certainly it would have to be at or near the top of any such list.
Good call - that was Fox’s acting debut IIRC. As for the highish rating, it’s kind of a cult classic, so that’s probably why it scores well. Some good kill scenes too, which draws in the horror crowd.
