The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s #1 Aliens (1 Viewer)

Because when you get older you realize what punks high school kids can be. Guy was only doing his job.
Truth be told, Carl the janitor was the only person who commanded respect in the flick.
Speaking of Carl, it took many watches before I caught this at the beginning.
Also, the guy who played Carl also played the "bo-hunk" that Sam's older sister was marrying in Sixteen Candles.

13. Hoosiers (1986)

Directed by: David Anspaugh

Starring: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper

Synopsis:
Small town high school basketball team competes for the Indiana state championship.

My practices aren’t designed for your enjoyment. - Gene Hackman as Coach Norman Dale

Simply put, one of the greatest sports movies of all time. A joy to watch no matter how many times I see it. The characters are great, Gene Hackman is great, Dennis Hopper steals every scene he’s in (even scenes where he doesn’t say anything- for instance when he’s watching the first game and Hackman decides to go with 4 on the court to teach his players a lesson- Hopper just grins and it’s a great moment.)

This is not the best movie of the decade. But it might be, with one exception coming up a little later, the most satisfying to watch.

Everyone I know loves this movie. I find it terrible and it was tough to watch it until the end, but I did. I didn’t buy anything about it as far as the relationships Hackman had with the woman or the team. It seemed so contrived.

I know it’s just me, obviously since so many love it but I don’t get this movie.

I have never seen it because everything I read about it made it seem like it was contrived.

I dislike most sports movies for this reason.

This is an odd movie for me to judge. I'm the target demographic for it. I have no problem with romantic storylines, but I never bought the Hackman/Hershey pairing. Hopper's great and steals the show.

I love watching most sports, I love watching movies, but I dislike watching sports movies.

Man, we thought Judd Nelson's character was the epitome of cool. We all wanted to be him.

This movie is one that was the backdrop to my MS years. Probably watched it a dozen times at least.
I just wanted to be whatever character got with Molly Ringwald in the movies.
So many guys had a thing for her, but I wasn’t one of them. Probably more Team Ally Sheedy, mainly in War Games and Bad Boys.

I was a sucker for the red hair. One of my earliest tv crushes was when we watched Anne of Green Gables in school.

I am told that it was. My mother-in-law was from the next town over and attended the semifinal game. She still talks about it.
In real life, that underdog Milan High School team beat Oscar Robertson’s Crispus Attucks High School during the state playoffs and I think that was in the state semifinals.

Yes, THAT Oscar Robertson. A future NBA Hall of Famer plus the Chess Club was probably a solid state title contender. Knocking out Attucks was a big deal.

The real life Milan team was more skilled than the Hickory High team in the movie. They had multiple sharpshooters who were lethal from mid-range, and thus were difficult to defend by doubling any one player. It is true that Milan team was thin — I think the roster was only seven or eight guys.

Yup. Never ever did nor ever will understand the love for Molly Ringwald. Always felt like we were being forced to find her beautiful. Team Ally for me too.

IIRC Ally Sheedy almost got the Claire part instead. We wouldn’t have known the difference if she had, but just seems strange to think of Ally in that role.

Maybe I needed to see it back in the day, because I somehow never saw Hoosiers until around 10 years ago or so and thought it was solid, but nothing special.

The Breakfast Club, on the other hand, is all kinds of great. This is THE classic dramedy, a perfect symmetry of comedy and drama.
IMO the only misstep is the silliness that is Emilio's dance routine.

Hoosiers is one of my top 10 all time.

The actors can actually play basketball, the acting is superb up and down and it's inspiring.

And for you cynics, it's loosely based on a true story so not quite as contrived as you'd think.
To be clear when I used “contrived” I wasnt talking about any of the basketball game moments. I didn’t feel any chemistry between Hackman and Hershey and how they fell in love so quick (in the movie no idea if that’s exactly how it happened in real life) and the relationship he had with the team. It seemed like they bought in for no real reason.

I’m not calling it a bad movie at all, but I saw it late after it was hyped up and I just didn’t “get it”.

That whole sequence is rather bizarre and a bit odd, but it was the 80s, so you just had to go with it.

Yeah, I know, grandma. There was a period of time where translucent pale redheads were painted by Frenchmen as the zenith of pulchritude but by the mid 1980s, most males evolved to find beauty in tanned, toned lasses who didn't look like they'd miss a week of school with the sniffles.

For the record, I love the movie. But Bill Simmons wrote a column once in which he counted up the attempts and makes for Jimmy in the movie, and it was something ridiculous, like 84/85 or something silly. I mean, unless you think Jimmy is twice as good as Steph Curry...

it also may be the greatest film about high school of all time- certainly it would have to be at or near the top of any such list.
It's no Slumdog Millionaire
Much less Class of 1984 - Oscar caliber performance by Salami.
Two surprising things about this movie. 1) Michael J Fox is in it (credits show him as Michael Fox)
2) It rates at 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. How?????
Good call - that was Fox’s acting debut IIRC. As for the highish rating, it’s kind of a cult classic, so that’s probably why it scores well. Some good kill scenes too, which draws in the horror crowd. And Alice Cooper 👍

His feature film debut was in something called Midnight Madness. He was on a Canadian TV show called Leo and Me before that.
