The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s #1 Aliens (4 Viewers)

I like Die Hard…..but not even in my top 25 for the 80’s.

High quality action yarn for sure. Die Hard Part 2 might even be better….that’s debatable.

But not this high. It’s all subjective.

Do The Right Thing not even in my top 50…..again all subjective.

I think my favorite part is now the exchange between Hans and Ellis:

"You're amazing. You've figured this all out already."

:lmao:
I think the Hans v Holly Gennero one is good too:

Holly Gennero: I have a request.
Hans Gruber: What idiot put you in charge?
Holly Gennero: You did.
[Hans looks at her]
Holly Gennero: When you murdered my boss. Now everybody's looking to me. Personally, I'd pass on the job. I don't enjoy being this close to you.
[long pause]
Hans Gruber : Go on.

So many of these interchanges with Gruber that were awesome. Totally changed the way villain's are portrayed. Should have been the #1 villian on the movie draft awhile back. We got screwed.

The bad guys in Die Hard 2 don't hold a candle to the bad guys in the original for starters. So no, Die Hard 2 is not better than the original.

Watched both over the holidays with the 15 year old as Christmas movies - he liked the original quite a bit.
I enjoyed Die Harder but agree its not as good. Better than "A Good Day to Die Hard" though.

My Ranking:
Die Hard, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, A Good Day to Die Hard

DTRT... Great movie. Beautifully filmed and telling the story/idea that needed telling at the time. Spikes movies are themes more than stories though, and while there are a massive amount of fun characters here (and in his other movies) I feel like they're there more to support the theme than inhabit the movie in a Fully fleshed way. So for me, this- as good as it is- is held back some.

Roger Ebert and I disagree with you.
sometimes people are wrong

We watch Die Hard every Christmas. It's the perfect Bruce Willis flick, which puts high up as the perfect 80's flick. Love the banter between McClane and Argyle with a cassette of Christmas in Hollis(one of my favorite Christmas songs) playing. Great opening scene!

5. Raging Bull (1980)

Directed by: Martin Scorsese

Starring: Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty

Synopsis:
The sad and tragic life of middleweight boxing champion Jake LaMotta

And though I’m no Olivier, if he fought Sugar Ray he’ would say, that the thing ain’t the ring it’s the play - Robert DeNiro as Jake LaMotta

Perhaps the most extraordinary acting I have ever seen in a movie. This probably remains Robert DeNiro’s finest moment. It is Martin Scorcese’s second finest film IMO (I like Goodfellas slightly better) but I wouldn’t argue the point. Both Pesci and Moriarty were unknowns prior to this movie and they are both amazing as well.
A lot of folks regard this as the greatest sports movie of all time but I’m not sure because the boxing is almost a sideshow to the main theme of a man’s obsession, jealousy and downfall. The scene at the end which includes the quote I chose (for which DeNiro famously gained all that weight) might be the saddest moment in a film I can ever remember; it’s almost too painful to watch.

Yeah, really bizarre comparing a sequel to the original.
Whoa, brother. Relative quality/ranking comparison... What people have been doing by saying 2 is better than 1. Seems like you missed that point?

Dude, your words:

"Strange to me to hear people even compare the two, let alone out it over DH1".

Why is it strange for people to compare a sequel to the original?
sigh. so yes, the point wasn't clear enough for you. or you really love part 2 and are offended. or you're in a mood to argue semantics. or all of the above. party on, gm.

Then make your point crystal clear so I can understand it. No need to be pompous.

Yes, I think DH2 is better than DH. It's a subjective opinion shared by others.

You made the statement that comparing the 2 movies was strange which I found bizarre.

And here we are. Sigh!

Brilliant. It's a sports movie that isn't a "sports movie." It's a character study of someone who happens to play a sport.

:penalty:

Not an 80's movie.

;)

Not a Scorsese movie fan. The cinematography for the fight scenes is interesting, but I found the movie to be disapppointing. I didn't learn a thing about LaMotta, probably because he didn't learn anything about himself. I could have done that in ten minutes.
I appreciate it more than like it. I think I rated in the 30s when KP and I did our 80s movie list. Even today, I think I would drop it a bit more.

It didn't do that well in the TimDraft where I rated movie performances about real people.

Michael McKean has one of the more interesting career arcs. From Lenny on Laverne & Shirley to Spinal Tap to playing Saul's brother Chuck on Better Call Saul.
Also briefly played with the '60s band Left Banke. Played guitar on this song
Also played in the band "the Barbusters" in Light of Day. He played bass in that band.
The movie with Michael J Fox and Joan Jett as brother and sister?
Yes.

I never saw the villain draft but hopefully Darth Vader won. The Sith lord was the best villain ever. How many others have action figures and costumes and many other items on the market for them?

Well, Hans has the action figures covered. As for costumes - I put on my business suit and bad guy beard...

Guys, can't we all just get along? Everyone knows the best movie in The Die Hard franchise is "A Good Day to Die Hard", right?

I was a big boxing fan around the time Raging Bull came out and didn't know older fighters like LaMotta. He was a beast and pulverized the opponent his wife said was good looking. I thought it was a great movie.
Speaking of his wife, Vikki, I remember she gained fame from the film and appeared at age 51 in a certain men's magazine.
