Ghostbusters is still better, though. Mr Staypuft is an icon. The last third of Stripes when they go to Europe is mostly dreadful. But the first two-thirds are so great that I can forgive it.

Unfortunately, Color Purple and Lucas are sandwiched inbetweenStripes and Platoon back to back is fitting I suppose.
The death of Sgt Elias was cinema at its finest.64. Platoon (1986)
Directed by: Oliver Stone
Starring: Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen
Synopsis: U.S. infantry soldiers try to survive in Vietnam.
Somebody once wrote, “Hell is the impossibility of reason”. That’s what this place feels like. - Charlie Sheen as Chris Taylor
This is a great war movie. It’s also dark and depressing. I’m not sure I would ever watch it again but it remains strong in my memory for its terrific acting and script. Dafoe was especially memorable.

How in the holy hell is Stripes higher than Ghostbusters?

He always is. I have yet to see him in anything that he didn't absolutely nail.Dafoe was especially memorable.
How about Good Morning, Vietnam? (And yes, I know there's a spoiler problem.)64. Platoon (1986)
Directed by: Oliver Stone
Of all the movies during the "coming to grips with Vietnam" movie era, this one always struck a chord with me. Not the most entertaining, I'd probably give that to Rambo, band of brothers or full metal jacket.
Great line. And from when he was a cabbie ditching his customer on a bridge, "Oh, it's not the speed really so much, I just wish I hadn't drunk all that cough syrup this morning."No, we're not homosexual, but we are willing to learn. I’ve often quoted a line from the opening (or very early) breakup scene
You can’t go!! All the plants are gonna die!
Since when is Bill Murray funny? How in the holy hell is Stripes higher than Ghostbusters?
Because it's a smarter, more funny movie?
The way Goose dies makes no sense.63. Top Gun (1986)
Directed by: Tony Scott
Starring: Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt
Synopsis: A navy pilot tries to live up to his father’s reputation.
I feel the need…the need for speed! - Tom Cruise as Maverick
About as opposite a movie to Platoon as can be imagined; ironic that they came out in the same year. Top Gun is a jingoistic celebration of the military in comic book fashion, yet for all that it’s a very compelling and enjoyable film. Cruise is a cocky SOB but still likable. Every woman I’ve ever known loves the volleyball scene.
???? The sheer force of being ejected from the cockpit of F16 fighter is pretty intense and he slammed his head onto the canopy glass top that did not clear away upon ejection. He broke his neck and he died instantly. The way Goose dies makes no sense.63. Top Gun (1986)

Deaths (at least in the US military in this period) from ejection were rare. I believe they would have been using a Martin Baker seat. The canopy thing is so unlikely. The writers could have picked some more likely death scenario during ejection than that. I failed my saving throw at that point.???? I think this post is supposed to be ironic. Or quixotic. Or spasmodic. Or something? Can't tell if it's an attempt at dry humor or not... which makes it kinda funnier to me.Deaths (at least in the US military in this period) from ejection were rare. I love Top Gun…..but I loved Maverick even more.
Platoon is a great movie. Gut wrenching.

You got a problem with James Garner, bub?Maverick is less than that
I'm on team Andy for this one. Sweaty, oiled up, shirtless, high fiving, homoerotic, team Andy."I know I'm late to your place on our first date but I'm kinda sweaty, so is it cool if I hop in your shower?"
Top Gun is just an okay movie. Maverick is less than that

Nah, nothing gay about Top Gun.
And there was something vaguely familiar about the concept of the approach will not being easy where they are required to maneuver straight down a trench and skim the surface to a difficultly accessible point where he target area is only two meters wide - similar to a small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system and a precise hit will start a chain reaction which should destroy the station. Only a precise hit will set off a chain reaction. The shaft is ray-shielded, so they have to use proton torpedoes.I enjoyed Maverick but what’s with them bombing Lake Tahoe? And what’s with them just happening to find an abandoned fully gassed plane to steal…in Lake Tahoe?
Superior in every way to it’s predecessor.I love Top Gun, but can admit in my old age its not a good movie. I will fight Andy on Maverick though. It corrected a lot of the issues i have with the first and the action is as good as a movie can look.

Two of the most overrated movies of all-time, imo."I know I'm late to your place on our first date but I'm kinda sweaty, so is it cool if I hop in your shower?"

Yeah, college was a crazy time for all of us.op Gun reminds me of collge. We watched the double feature of that and Days of Thunder all the time.
