Its a movie that aged horribly. I caught bits of it the other day and it was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Ha ha. At the time, this movie was epic and part of our culture.

Keanu's role in this and Parenthood are the only times I've found his "acting" performances believable.

Synopsis: Studies the lives of rich druggie college students in Los Angeles.

Do I look like I’m ready for homework? - Robert Downey Jr as Julian

I described this film to my daughter as a sort of 1980s movie version of the current TV show Euphoria- same basic theme. It was supposedly based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name, but it has almost nothing in common with that expressionist novel with no plot (which gets its title from the Elvis Costello song with which it also has nothing in common.) This movie DOES have a plot, and even somewhat of a Hollywood happy ending as the three friends somehow manage to rescue Julian from a dire fate and kick their cocaine habits. As unrealistic as that and the rest of the film is, it’s rather mesmerizing and it made Robert Downey Jr a star. And he’s terrific in this role, though he appears to be playing himself.

ETA Almost forgot to mention that this film features one of my favorite Bangles’ tunes: their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter”. Love that opening guitar riff.

I’ve seen this movie more times than I can count. Not that I think it’s a great movie, but Downey and Spader kill it (not surprisingly). And Jami Gertz never looked better, with the possible exception of The Lost Boys.

Agree. Surprised Tim didn't list Spader as a star of the film.

A thoroughly cheesy but extremely enjoyable dystopian what-if film. The teenagers get to blow up a lot of ****, shout “Wolverines!”, visit their families in re-education camps, etc. The whole thing is awesome.

Lea Thompson was in so many 80s teen flicks

There was a love scene shot between her & Powers but it got cut. One of many bad choices made for this film.

As much as loathed it when it was released, like many Patrick Swayze movies it became a guilty pleasure in tv reruns.

Less Than Zero is kinda meh for me. Great soundtrack, but the story was meh. Hollywood ending too....kinda.

Red Dawn is awesome sauce. I love this movie and loved it then. Just a time capsule of our teen years in a nutshell with the cold war. The remake sucked ***.
 
the shot of Robert taking on the Russian helo on his own with an RPG is one of those things that will always stick in my brain. such a cool shot, with the rah-rah music playing.

That's odd, in the Less Than Zero film I saw, the Julian character died in the Corvette while in the presence of his two friends, after performing sex acts to pay off his drug debt.

I musta missed the Hollywood ending

Dig if you will a picture…of Prince in 1984 with a showcase movie of his most famous album, (one of the greatest albums of the decade for sure.) Apollonia, Wendy and Lisa are all here, along with Morris Day and the Time (love “Jungle Love”). Oh no let’s go!

Greatest albums of the decade? No, one of the greatest albums of all time, any decade. The movie was kind of bad but at least it gave us a chance to see Prince performing the music.

A forgotten classic, and one of my personal favorites on this list. (I learned upon reading the Wiki page that it is also one of Quentin Tarantino’s all time favorite films.) Costner, who will have a prominent place in this countdown, shines in his debut role. The parachute school sequence remains fixed in my memory- so good.

I feel like nobody knows this movie. One of my favorites. And yes, the laundry/parachute scene is incredible. Love the pilot character.

This is one of a handful of coming of age, post-college movies that came out this decade that really struck a cord with me at the time.
