The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s #1 Aliens (3 Viewers)

95. Re-Animator (1985)

Directed by: Stuart Gordon

Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, Barbara Crampton

Synopsis:
Medical students discover a serum that re-animates dead bodies

Who’s going to believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow. - Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Herbert West

One of the better horror-comedies of the era. Based on an HP Lovecraft short story. Combs is terrific as Dr. Herbert West. This whole movie is gross and hilarious.
CLASSIC.

94. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

Directed by: Stephen Herek

Starring: Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, George Carlin

Synopsis:
Bill and Ted time travel to collect historical figures for a school project.

Hey Genghis Khan, want a Twinkie? - Alex Winter as Bill.

Very silly but very fun classic. Go-Go Jane Wiedlin as Joan of Arc is pretty hot as I recall. San Dimas High School is a real place.

Its a movie that aged horribly. I caught bits of it the other day and it was horrible. Absolutely horrible. Ha ha. At the time, this movie was epic and part of our culture.

Yep. We all had a small stretch of time where air guitar was what we did. Ha ha

Keanu's role in this and Parenthood are the only times I've found his "acting" performances believable.

93. Less Than Zero (1989)

Directed by: Marek Kanievska

Starring: Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, Robert Downey Jr.

Synopsis:
Studies the lives of rich druggie college students in Los Angeles.

Do I look like I’m ready for homework? - Robert Downey Jr as Julian

I described this film to my daughter as a sort of 1980s movie version of the current TV show Euphoria- same basic theme. It was supposedly based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel of the same name, but it has almost nothing in common with that expressionist novel with no plot (which gets its title from the Elvis Costello song with which it also has nothing in common.) This movie DOES have a plot, and even somewhat of a Hollywood happy ending as the three friends somehow manage to rescue Julian from a dire fate and kick their cocaine habits. As unrealistic as that and the rest of the film is, it’s rather mesmerizing and it made Robert Downey Jr a star. And he’s terrific in this role, though he appears to be playing himself.

ETA Almost forgot to mention that this film features one of my favorite Bangles’ tunes: their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter”. Love that opening guitar riff.

I’ve seen this movie more times than I can count. Not that I think it’s a great movie, but Downey and Spader kill it (not surprisingly). And Jami Gertz never looked better, with the possible exception of The Lost Boys.

Agree. Surprised Tim didn't list Spader as a star of the film.

92. Red Dawn (1984)

Directed by: John Milius

Starring: Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey, Powers Booth

Synopsis:
The Soviet Union invades the United States. A group of Midwest high school students take to the hills and stage guerilla warfare.

You think you’re tough for eating beans every day? A hallf a million scarecrows in Denver would give anything for one mouthful of what you got. - Powers Booth as Colonel Andy Tanner

A thoroughly cheesy but extremely enjoyable dystopian what-if film. The teenagers get to blow up a lot of ****, shout “Wolverines!”, visit their families in re-education camps, etc. The whole thing is awesome.

How did you get shot down, Colonel?

It was five to one. I got four.
Yeah Powers Booth got all the best lines in this one.

Erica: You American?

Col. Andy Tanner : Red-blooded.

Erica : What's the capital of Texas?

Col. Andy Tanner : Austin.

Erica : Wrong, commie! It's Houston.

Lea Thompson was in so many 80s teen flicks

There was a love scene shot between her & Powers but it got cut. One of many bad choices made for this film.

As much as loathed it when it was released, like many Patrick Swayze movies it became a guilty pleasure in tv reruns.

94. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure - holds up pretty well for me, but I'm sure the younger generations hate it
93. Less Than Zero - would be way higher on my list, love the soundtrack
92. Red Dawn - way higher on my list, kind of like a brat pack movie for me, but the B team brat pack

Less Than Zero is kinda meh for me. Great soundtrack, but the story was meh. Hollywood ending too....kinda.

Red Dawn is awesome sauce. I love this movie and loved it then. Just a time capsule of our teen years in a nutshell with the cold war. The remake sucked ***.

the shot of Robert taking on the Russian helo on his own with an RPG is one of those things that will always stick in my brain. such a cool shot, with the rah-rah music playing.

I have seen 1 of these.

That's odd, in the Less Than Zero film I saw, the Julian character died in the Corvette while in the presence of his two friends, after performing sex acts to pay off his drug debt.

I musta missed the Hollywood ending

Is that what happened? Listen dude it’s been 30 years since I saw it, I don’t remember. Oh well.

91. Purple Rain (1984)

Directed by: Albert Magnoli

Starring: Prince, Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day

Synopsis:
A musician known as The Kid displays his talents in a Minneapolis nightclub.

Your lips would make a lollipop too happy- Morris Day as Morris

Dig if you will a picture…of Prince in 1984 with a showcase movie of his most famous album, (one of the greatest albums of the decade for sure.) Apollonia, Wendy and Lisa are all here, along with Morris Day and the Time (love “Jungle Love”). Oh no let’s go!

Greatest albums of the decade? No, one of the greatest albums of all time, any decade. The movie was kind of bad but at least it gave us a chance to see Prince performing the music.

90. Fandango (1985)

Directed by: Kevin Reynolds

Starring: Kevin Costner, Judd Nelson, Sam Robards

Synopsis:
During the Vietnam War, a group of friends in Texas head to the Mexican border to dig up a bottle of champagne.

There’s nothing wrong with going nowhere, son. - Kevin Costner as Gardner

A forgotten classic, and one of my personal favorites on this list. (I learned upon reading the Wiki page that it is also one of Quentin Tarantino’s all time favorite films.) Costner, who will have a prominent place in this countdown, shines in his debut role. The parachute school sequence remains fixed in my memory- so good.

Dom!

I feel like nobody knows this movie. One of my favorites. And yes, the laundry/parachute scene is incredible. Love the pilot character.

This is one of a handful of coming of age, post-college movies that came out this decade that really struck a cord with me at the time.

I thought this might be a biopic about Clem Fandango. Any Matt Berry fans here? https://youtu.be/B87M6_kwPpI?si=f83RVKeK_vT1Jztd
