The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s # 9. The Terminator (12 Viewers)

21. Raising Arizona (1987)

Directed by: Joel and Ethan Coen

Starring: Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, William Forsythe

Synopsis:
A couple desperate for a baby kidnap a quintuplet.

Edwina’s insides were a rocky place where my seed could find no purchase- Nicholas Cage as H.L.

Classic Coen brothers movie. Been years since I’ve seen it and I really need to watch it again. As I recall it’s one of the funniest films of the entire decade and the two leads are absolutely tremendous. It may be my favorite Nicholas Cage role.

Cage was something before he went koo-koo.

Top 3 comedy for me.

Loooooove this movie.

It would be totally tubular if we see an earlier movie of his ahead.

23. The Princess Bride (1987)

Directed by: Rob Reiner

Starring: Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, Robin Wright, Andre the Giant

I don't know anybody who doesn't like this movie. Timeless classic.

:oldunsure:

:oldunsure::oldunsure:

Never seen it. Never could keep my interest, really. I don't (don't hate me @BLOCKED_PUNT ) really like the fantasy realm of things, especially movies. Never dug Lord of the Rings or anything even remotely depicting a feudal state of affairs. I just do not get the Medieval Times or foreign imaginary worlds thing.

Sci-fi I'm a little better with but not by much.

Just read the synopsis of The Princess Bride and while it sounds charming and cool, I'll probably never see it. It is indeed one of the most quoted movies of Gen X's generation, I would say.

I think for me, I didn't see it right when it came out, was probably 7-8 years later when I was in college. I thought it somewhat humorous, but nothing near the accolades it gets. And I can't stand Elwes.
But at least he died in the movie (mostly).

The True Grit remake was good, Big Lebowski is pretty good. I don't think its as good as it gets hailed as. Liked Barton Fink. Never seen Hudsucker Proxy but I think its supposed to be pretty good.

21. Raising Arizona (1987)
All I remember about it is enough mindless screaming to make me watch something else.
Just couldn't watch this. Or really any Coen Brothers movie. I managed to get through Fargo. I laughed twice.
It's not exactly a comedy. It has dark humor elements, but it's really an absurdist drama.

Anyway, this is one of my all time favorite dialog exchanges

Parole Board chairman: They've got a name for people like you H.I. That name is called "recidivism."

Parole Board member: Repeat offender!

Parole Board chairman: Not a pretty name, is it H.I.?

H.I.: No, sir. That's one bonehead name, but that ain't me any more.

Parole Board chairman: You're not just telling us what we want to hear?

H.I.: No, sir, no way.

Parole Board member: 'Cause we just want to hear the truth.

H.I.: Well, then I guess I am telling you what you want to hear.

Parole Board chairman: Boy, didn't we just tell you not to do that?

H.I.: Yes, sir.

Parole Board chairman: Okay, then.

Don't forget boxer Tex Cobb as bounty hunter Leonard Smalls. That was great casting.

I have a great respect for the Coen's, their movies, and their process. Safe to say I don't get or click with their humor much though, so I don't end up liking many of their movies.

My memory of this movie is just laughing out loud until my guts hurt.

20. Blade Runner (1982)

Directed by: Ridley Scott

Starring: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos

Synopsis:
In a future dystopian Los Angeles, a police officer hunts down rebellious androids.

Quite an experience to live in fear isn’t it? Thats what it’s like to be a slave. - Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty

One of the most visually striking science fiction films of all time. Scott was heavily influenced by the 1929 Fritz Lang classic Metropolis and he and the scriptwriters fleshed out the Philip K. **** short story to offer a movie filled with ideas and stunning to watch.

I appreciate the quote, but how can you not go with the iconic death speech?

“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die”.

Arguably the best sci-fi movie ever. I'd have this higher.

(Sorry, doing a drop in drive by just to say the above, I'll shut up now)

Including Blade Runner there are 5 scifi movies in my top 20, so I guess I have to take issue. But not too much.

For the 80s? There were definitely some good ones. I still strongly prefer Blade Runner but:

The Terminator, E.T., Aliens, Back to the Future, and especially The Empire Strikes Back are all worthy movies.
