The 1972 Song Draft ... (23 Viewers)

6.09 Stevie Wonder---You Are The Sunshine Of My Life

I don't draft many ballads, but I love this song---I played this to my 9 year old daughter as I drove her home after a lengthy hospital stay for spinal surgery---scary stuff.

I know, I know  I don't care.
Does anyone know the story behind this song? Why does Stevie have some unidentified singers open the song, only to disappear as soon as he starts singing?

Identified by allmusic: It's unusual in that the first vocals heard are not those of Wonder, but those of singers Jim Gilstrap ( "Swing Your Daddy") and Gloria Barley.

Wildbill picks....

Steely Dan - "Dirty Work"
Not Steely Dan's best known song, but it's probably my favorite. And I love singing it to the wife when I'm doing chores around the house.
I was waiting to pounce on "Dirty Work" towards the end. Nice grab, I say.

Can I pick? In the chamber?
It looks to me like Print, pat, and Doug are in the chamber. If Doug picks, wildbill will take his place. After wildbill picks, you'll be in the chamber ... that is, if I understand all of this #### correctly.

I`m not up for a while, I picked the Ding-A-Ling song earlier.
Ah ... that one's not on the front page.Since I'm in the chamber ... and Big Star has been broken out:

7.08 - Big Star, "In the Street"

I do tend to apply the clock as necessary in conjunction with the chamber rule. Ne'er shall there be three people in the chamber, none of whom are around.Simey... thanks for makin my picks.

i have to sign off now. i won't be on until 3 pm tomorrow, and Fair Warning told me he was off tomorrow, and will do my picks so i sent him a couple. if those picks are taken, or it gets back to me after them, skip me and i will make them up at 3.

Wildbill picks...

7 - Danny O'Keefe - "Goodtime Charlie's Got The Blues"
Man that;s a great song.I have be very derelict toward my partner so far, but I just sent him aboot 50 songs.

 PM received, some nice ones there.
You forgot to tell him about the sucky ones that you PMed me about.

I never knew they did that song until I bought their latest GH. I thought it might have been CS+N. Nice song, really fits the era.

I heard this song for the first time just a few years ago. It was at a time when things weren't going so well for me, and this was one of those songs that made me feel better by making me feel sad. Some's gotta win, some's gotta lose.

Many don't think it's Steely Dan, since they had a different lead singer on that song (David Palmer) as opposed to Donald Fagen.

Unless I missed a pick, looks like Marco went last. Next three up:

7.11 Nigel Tufnel

7.12 JuniorNB

7.13 Tremendous Upside

Not sure what time Nige gets online.I'll wait for him. It'll be slow going anyway while the different time zones all start their days.

The Edgar Winter Group- Frankenstein
Man, I even looked this song up on a certain site and it said '73; then, when I saw you picked it, I looked it up again, on another site, and it said '72.
I saw the same thing. "They Only Come Out At Night" album was released in very late '72, but "Frankenstein" charted in March 1973, hitting #1 in May 1973. This pick really pushes the envelope, but I guess it has to be counted since it's been so long. They Only Come Out At Night

Nige should probably be on in an hour or so, unless he checks in before work.Looks doubtful that we'll finish this thing today.

For DCThunder:

5.18 The O’Jays - "Back Stabbers"

6.01 Luther Ingram - "If Loving You is Wrong, I Don’t Want to Be Right"
My man! I know this board is rock-oriented (though lots of "other" music has been going in this draft :banned: ), but I'm shocked that "Back Stabbers" lasted this long. One of my all-time faves, this song has a great piano opening that just oozes paranoia & dread. The lead vocals - as with just about any O'Jays record - are fantastic on the verses. And the chorus has an almost-speaking-in-tongues sound:They smile in your face.........

allthetimetheywannatakeyourplace (sung as if it's all one word)

Philly soul at, IMO its finest - my only gripe being that the song is too short; there should be another verse

Hey Uruk, you should really try to get in one of these drafts. You'd be a solid addition with your knowledge base.

I would have loved to, zam (esp. the '69 & '72 drafts), but my days get so whacky that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up. Maybe the next old-timers draft.......Is there a schedule of upcoming years? :D

You don't have to be around - PMing songs works just as well. You'll have to clear it with the commishes though. ;) I think the next one is going to be early 90s. After that TBD.

Interesting tidbit from "This Day In Music"....

On this date in 1963, just months before they hit the big time in England, the Rolling Stones played a gig in a British hotel. They were paid $41.00. That's total, not per man. The audience consisted of 66 people.

Today's birthdays:

Paul Jones (lead singer, Manfred Mann)

Rupert Holmes (Pina Colada song)

and

Michelle Shocked

A late '70's "height of Disco" draft would be fun too. Kind of a Studio 54 vibe.:linegreenpolyesterleisuresuit:

Very interesting. They each probably make more than that per second these days.

That would work, although I was thinking more like '75 to split the difference between '72 and '79 that we've done.

There's still a touch of resentment towards my mom because of it.

I've gone to great lengths to keep those pictures from everyone I know. You have a better chance of me posting nude pictures of my wife than ever seeing any pictures of me with acne and an afro.

whats a good first ojays record to buy?

also does anyone have steve winwoods about time?

i have the walking on tune from that album from a bonnaroo sampler and love it.

At what point do we move on and let Nige make-up his pick when he gets here?
Not sure - I don't want to usurp his authority. Maybe if we go ahead and someone winds up taking his pick, we can agree for that person to select another one.
