The 1972 Song Draft ... (1 Viewer)

I do own the whole 25-cd set of Have A Nice Day (all 70's one and two hit artists).  Put out by Rhino.  Some really good stuff, but some real bad stuff.  '72 was one of those years.
I have about 20 of the 25.
Somewhere in my mother's house, I think we still have Hustle '76 - on 8-track. :bag:
When Van McCoy put out "The Hustle" in '75 or '76, it really reinvigorated pop music. It was a fresh sound and it was played everywhere. There were some other good songs on that album too, IIRC.

Off the top of my head, I also remember "Sky High" (Pilot), "Run Joey Run" (David Geddes?), "Poetry Man" (Phoebe Snow), "Jackie Blue" (Ozark Mountain Daredevils) and "Convoy" (forget who did it).

"Convoy" was the signature song of CW McCall, the pseudonym of an advertizing man. Google that name and you'll be amazed what comes up. The absolute height of the CB radio craze, good buddy.

Is it me or is 1972 one of the worst years of the 70's for music?
I think it's pretty decent. However, a lot of BIG artists essentially took the year off.
Not much staying power in the 1971-1974 era IMO
I don't know - that's a pretty good 4 year period IMO........The Stones released arguably their best album (Exile), not to mention the criminally underrated Goats Head Soup. The Who were at the top of their game too with Who's Next & Quadrophenia, which usually finish 1, 2, or 3 in any list of best Who albums. Zep released ZoSo & Houses. Elton John had a run of hit singles & albums the likes of which has rarely been seen. Some of the second tier white rockers also enjoyed some pretty decent success too - BTO, Grand Funk, Humble Pie, T-Rex, Edgar Winter. For metalheads, your music was pretty much defined during these years with Sabbath, Alice Cooper, & Deep Purple etching their names on Mount Riffmore. David Bowie became a huge star during this period. There was also a period of great creativity in black music during this time, similar to what white rock went through in '66-'68. What's Going On, There's A Riot Goin On, Innervisions, all of Funkadelic's early stuff, the beginnings of funk (Ohio Players and Kool & The Gang were hot then)....

I think the early 70s get a bad rap sometimes, similar to the early 60s (you know, when music was "dead"). But I think this draft shows that even a supposedly bad year like '72, when really looked at, doesn't have to hang it's head in comparison with any other year (well, maybe '65).

Does this guy know his stuff, or what.

OK, these won't get me any cred with the rock snobs around here, but one of the biggest songs of 1972 had to do with depression and suicide, all around a kind of catchy pop tune. LIsten to the lyrics of this song closely.

7.18--Gilbert O'Sullivan--"Alone Again (Naturally)"

and

8.01 Michael Jackson--"Ben"

This is one of Michael's first songs without the rest of the Jacksons and gives a preview of his pop ballad style that in the next 10 years would make him the King of Pop. These aren't great rockers, but they are typical 1972 songs. The O'Sullivan one may not stand up 33 years later, but IMHO, Ben really does.

Good calls. "Ben" specifically was on my radar screen. I just don't like rats (Michael and rodents).

Second song, by my count, by a pedophile drafted.

Gary Glitter was the other one, I suppose. You can make it three if you factor in the Who.

is this the same song that Aaron Neville sang years later?

I believe so. The lead singer on the original was Cuba Gooding, Sr

Lyrics for Alone Again by Gilbert O'Sullivan:

In a little while from now,

If I'm not feeling any less sour

I promised myself to treat myself

And visit a nearby tower,

And climbing to the top,

Will throw myself off

In an effort to make it clear to who

Ever what it's like when your shattered

Left standing in the lurch, at a church

Where people 're saying,

"My God that's tough, she stood him up!

No point in us remaining.

May as well go home."

As I did on my own,

Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday,

I was cheerful, bright and gay,

Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,

The role I was about to play

But as if to knock me down,

Reality came around

And without so much as a mere touch,

Cut me into little pieces

Leaving me to doubt,

All about God and His mercy

For if He really does exist

Why did He desert me

In my hour of need?

I truly am indeed,

Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that

There are more hearts

Broken in the world

That can't be mended

Left unattended

What do we do? What do we do?

(instrumental break)

Now looking back over the years,

And what ever else that appears

I remember I cried when my father died

Never wishing to have cried the tears

And at sixty-five years old,

My mother, God rest her soul,

Couldn't understand, why the only man

She had ever loved had been taken

Leaving her to start with a heart

So badly broken

Despite encouragement from me

No words were ever spoken

And when she passed away

I cried and cried all day

Alone again, naturally

Alone again, naturally

Question regarding someone's PM...

If someone gives you three choices for round seven

and three choices for round eight...

Would his 8th round pick be his first 8th round choice or his second seventh round choice?

Uncle sometimes divides them up like that. Are the two sevenths the same artist?

When I send a PM, I just list a few songs in order of preference (irrespective of round). Simplifies things.

Since they specified, I would do ONLY those songs in the 7th (unless all taken. THEN I would take the 8th rounder).

The lyrics are even more depressing when you read them, but it was still a VERY big song back then.

Anyone ever hear the parody of this song about the Rocky movies?Hilarious.

Reverting back to the songwriter route of '72, this artist IMHO was one of the best (irrespective of one's views about his religious/political leanings).

8.05 Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) - "Morning Has Broken"

You don't tug on Superman's cape

You don't spit into the wind

You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger

And you don't mess around with Jim

7.16 Jim Croce - "You Don't Mess Around With Jim"
