The 1972 Song Draft ... (1 Viewer)

Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile) / Van Morrison

This song just makes me feel great. Whenever I hear it I sing it in my head for days.

Sorry been out all day and will be out all night.

I'll break the Flack barrier

Roberta Flack - The first time I ever blah blah ..... you know the one

and not sure if this qualifies but saw it on a list. If not I'll catch up tomorrow.

Elton John - Crocodile Rock
I'm almost sure this is 1973. I don't have this on any of my lists.
I saw a couple of references that said it was released as a single in '72 and peaked in '73. It was also on the album "Don't Shoot Me" - released in Jan. '73.Think it's kosh . . .
I have the single charting on 2/3/73 for the first time. Single was released in 73. link

I was just hoping it would slide. No more ringers in here.

Off that sight, it was released as a promo (listed after the UK and French singles) so its a go. :hot:

I'm really bummed that this is only going 12 rounds.

(I know, get over it).

There are 2 studio albums in particular that no one has touched yet

(they're kind of sneaky and have probably avoided detection, but would be fairly popular if certain individuals realized that they came out in '72).

Also, another VERY famous live album has not been touched.

Has some MEGA hits on it.

Still another live album came out that is kind of along the lines of Nige's Cream Live II choice.

Recorded a few years before, but released in '72.

(Didn't realize either existed until this week).

Also, can't believe the amount of KILLER jazz that came out in '72.

Probably should have devoted more space for it, but am only taking 1 pick (Round 12 obviously).

Could easily have filled half my draft.

Oh well.

Couldn't pass on Iron Man.

11.10 Townes Van Zandt---To Live Is To Fly
ive been wanting to check townes out since I love Gillian Welch and every time I see her she does anywhere from 1 to 3 of his tunes. What cd should I pick up first?

I only own 3 of his albums, including this one---High, Low and In Between, which is my favorite. I doubt you could go wrong, but I'd start with this one. Gillian is great too.

For his R12 pick, Fair Warning takes

Alice Cooper - Elected
If FW took his 12th I assume I can take my 11th at 12th? I'm a bit lost.I had 3 songs from an artist I've already chosen, (no, not Carly Simon - bite me) another one, but I can't decide, so I'll take two off the radar songs.

11.12 Wayne Newton - "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" (if any of you listened to Glen Beck, you'll understand this one)

Screw it, I'm going to take one of the 3 from Stevie Wonder.

12.06 Stevie Wonder - "Maybe Your Baby" (listen to this one and you know where Michael Jackson got his "heh - heh")

Normally I'd agree, but this draft seemed to come to a screeching halt yesterday. Maybe it's best to let it go at 12, and post the just-missed ones.

I took my 12th as I was one of the three in the chamber.

My last pick. The theme from All In The Family.

Carrol O'Connor and Jean Stapleton - Those Were The Days

Boy, the way Glenn Miller played

Songs that made the Hit Parade

Guys like us we had it made

Those were the days

And you knew who you were then

Girls were girls and men were men

Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again

Didn't need no welfare state

Everybody pulled his weight

Gee, our old LaSalle ran great

Those were the days!

Mkay, since many are already posting their 12th and last picks, here goes. This wasn't my initial intention, but just found this little gem from one of my all-time favorite children's movies:

Sammy Davis, Jr. - "The Candy Man"

FairWarnings 1972 Draft:

1.17 FairWarning - War - "Cisco Kid"

2.02 FairWarning - Rolling Stones - "Tumbling Dice"

3.17 FairWarning - Ricky Nelson - "Garden Party"

4.02 FairWarning - The Who - "Join Together"

5.17 FairWarning - Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen - "Hot Rod Lincoln"

6.02 FairWarning - Moody Blues - "Story in Your Eyes"

7.17 FairWarning - Faces - "Stay With Me"

8.02 FairWarning - The Main Ingredient - "Everybody Plays the Fool"

9.17 FairWarning - Grand Funk Railroad - "Rock & Roll Soul"

10.02 FairWarning - Three Dog Night - "Old Fashioned Love Song"

11.17 FairWarning - Loggins & Messina - Angry Eyes

12.1 FairWarning - Alice Cooper - Elected

To me, one of the harder years to draft. Not many powerhouse acts and the ones didn't put out their best works. Not much in the way of rock so it went early. Everyone focused on one-hit acts (out of necessity).

11.18--Carole King--"Sweet Seasons"

and

12.01--Helen Reddy--"I Am Woman"

I'll close out with one of the biggest pop stars of the early 70s, Carole King. This isn't from her Tapestry albumn, but its become a soft rock perennial and was very popular back in the day.

And you can't ignore Helen Reddy's feminist opus just because you might not agree with the politics of it. Not a great song, but a cultural touchstone of the times, I Am Woman helped get the Equal Rights Amendment almost passed. You still hear it played for feminist causes and candidates.

I think I started strong, but then faded...

1.16 Hov34 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

2.03 Hov34 - Chicago - "Saturday in the Park"

3.16 Hov34 - The Hollies - "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)"

4.03 Hov34 - Paul Simon – "Mother and Child Reunion"

5.16 Hov34 - Carly Simon - "You're So Vain"

6.03 Hov34 - The Temptations - "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone"

7.16 Hov34 - Jim Croce - "You Don't Mess Around With Jim"

8.03 Hov34 - Bill Withers - "Use Me"

9.16 Hov34 - Billy Preston - "Outa Space"

10.03 Hov34 - Carly Simon - "Anticipation"

11.12 Hov34 Wayne Newton - "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast"

12.06 Hov34 Stevie Wonder - "Maybe Your Baby"

11- Waylon Jennings (w/ Willie Nelson) - "Good Hearted Woman"
Simey, I saw that you chose Good Hearted Woman by Waylon and Willie. This version didn't come out until 1976 with the release of Wanted: The Outlaws. The version that came out in '72 was just Waylon, no Willie. You just need to clarify which version you want.I might be able to find a link to this, but I know this from the liner notes of the Wanted: The Outlaws. (also, the version w/ Waylon and Willie, is actually not live)
