A.J. McCarron has a "great shot" to open the season as the team's No. 2 quarterback, according to Bengals.com.

The team has yet to sign a replacement for Jason Campbell, the No. 2 last season. McCarron has changed his mechanics while working with Dr. Tom House this offseason, claiming to have a "somewhat brand new" throwing motion.

Serious question: Has anyone ever undergone an overhaul of their throwing motion and succeeded after a period where the old throwing motion was a disaster?

Not sure if it fits what you're specifically asking, but Rodgers underwent some mechanics changes sitting behind Favre I believe, pretty drastic in fact.

Nice article, hadn't read that before.

I think it's largely impractical in today's NFL, all highly talented or drafted QB's are expected to start pretty early, if not immediately.

Unless you're truly talking about a developmental QB sitting behind an unquestioned starter with a stable coaching staff. Aaron Rodgers had three years to alter his muscle memory and make the new mechanics the norm for his body. He also obviously mastered the mental game in those three years which lead to him thinking less while on the field, always a positive where ingrained, repetitive physical motions in athletics are concerned.

Now, it's intriguing because McCarron kind of meets my specifications: he's a legit developmental pick with no expectations. He was drafted by one of the most stable franchises in the NFL, and is sitting behind an unspectacular but fairly unquestioned top-15 NFL QB.

That doesn't mean McCarron will ever develop into anything more than a decent backup, but it does mean that his new and improved mechanics could actually have a chance to stick.

There are apparently "rumors" that McCarron could push Andy Dalton, but that's skipping pretty far ahead considering McCarron has never so much as thrown a preseason pass. McCarron does look to have a comfortable lead on Josh Johnson and Terrelle Pryor. McCarron was a fifth-round pick in the 2014 draft.

If we're talking NFL, it's interesting that the Bengals may have groomed themselves a real backup for a pretty solid roster. Strictly fantasy, he's almost definitely a long-term backup on a very average offense.

What's going on in Cincy? BDalton looks bad and is hurt, and AJ has put together a solid preseason.

Andy was 6/6 with a touchdown on Saturday night.

His job. McCarron will be back up. They'll roster only two - maybe throw Wenning on the practice squad.

Devil's in the details. . . While factually accurate (he's got 3 rings), it's not like he was slinging the ball around when they won the one his redshirt/freshman season.

He was fine today. Wasn't asked to do too much but more importantly I think he didn't TRY to do too much (no interceptions). The long throws were really good in fact. Hopefully Green will be 100% next week and we'll have Eifert back. Much bigger test next week.

The Bengals are preparing as if A.J. McCarron will start Saturday's Wild Card game.

Andy Dalton (broken thumb) has shed his cast, but has yet to resume throwing. He'll undoubtedly be given every chance to prove he's ready to return in practice, but it appears unlikely. If the Bengals can sneak by the Steelers, it sounds like Dalton would be a go for the Divisional Round.

Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official website believes owner Mike Brown would consider trading A.J. McCarron to the Browns for the "right price."
Hobson hints the Bengals could send McCarron and their No. 9 overall pick to the Browns in exchange for picks 12 and 33. The Bengals, along with most teams outside of the top five, want to move down in the first round and accumulate more selections. McCarron is probably a distant Plan B for the Browns, as they figure to make at least one more run at Jimmy Garoppolo.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Bengals want a first-round pick "at least" for A.J. McCarron.

In other words, the Bengals do not want to trade A.J. McCarron. Scheduled to be a restricted free agent (pending arbitration) after this season, McCarron is under cheap team control for the next two years, so the Bengals have zero incentive to move him for anything less than their price. He will sit behind Andy Dalton for at least another season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns have "touched base" with the Bengals about QB A.J. McCarron.
Rapsheet is hearing that Cincinnati's asking price for McCarron is "high," which explains why talks haven't gotten very far. Cleveland did well to land Myles Garrett with the No. 1 pick, but that obviously doesn't solve the team's quarterback conundrum. The Bengals don't have much incentive to move McCarron, who is under contract through 2018. The Browns also checked in on Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo but were told he's not available.

The Broncos strongly denied a 104.3 Denver report from Sandy Clough that the team is "aggressively pursuing a trade" for A.J. McCarron.

"Sandy Clough" sounds like a movie character. We'd never even heard of the guy before a half hour ago. But the rumor had been circulating Twitter before Broncos GM John Elway labeled it "irresponsible, fake news," while another team source called it "150 percent false." Elway says the team is happy with Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. Though that may not be entirely true, it doesn't exactly make sense for a contending Bengals team to trade an above-average backup that is under team control for two more seasons when Andy Dalton has missed games in recent years.
