The 50 Greatest Hair Albums EVER. (3 Viewers)

great list!

kinda thought we might have seen something from:

Bang Tango

Babylon AD

Ozzy (maybe not "hair" enough?)

Dio (if Ozzy had made it, he should too)

Shark Island

Salty Dog (personal favorite)

Extreme

Love/Hate

Night Ranger

*eta - Killer Dwarfs

Good job!

While I obviously am not a big fan of the genre, I only owned about 4 on the list, I do remember most of the bands and it was fun reliving the time period.

...and my hatred of the songs. ;)
Just out of curiosity which bands were you into around this time?

I sided more with the thrash side so me liking any of this stuff was always frowned upon by certain friends but I was just into good music and some of the "hair' bands actually did produce some really good stuff if you can get past the image they were throwing out.
Early 80's were the typical bands like Priest, Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy, Dio, Scorpions, Accept, Twisted Sister. Queensryche into the mid-80's with Megadeth, Slayer, Suicidal, Metallica, Overkill, Exodus, Voivod, then into heavier and/or more obscure stuff like Sepultura, Vio-Lence, Carnivore, Death, Death Angel, Candlemass, Sacred Reich, St. Vitus, Leeway, Dream Death, Sabbat, Type O. I was always drawn more to the death and doom style than speed.

I would have tossed in Badlands first album as well as Y&T(In Rock We Trust)into the mix and maybe even some Loudness-Lightning Strikes. Also might throw a bone to Lita Ford.
Absolutely agree with Badlands. The only way they don't make a top 50 is if you don't consider them hair. Love Y&T but I liked Earthshaker, Mean Streak and Black Tiger better (although IRWT is a good one too).

Others I would add to my list are:

White Lion - Pride

Fastway - Fastway

Riot - Fire Down Under (very under rated)

P.S. I have 46 of the 50 so yeah...I like the list.

Thanks, buddy. Merry Christmas.

I currently own 34 of these 50 CD's so it looks like I might need to do some shopping.

As a service to future generations for the past year or so I've been buying my 17 y/o daughter "my music" CD's. Along with the mandatory Pink Floyd, Doors, Zeppelin, Nirvana I've introduced her to hair bands as well:

Appetite For Destruction

Slippery When Wet

Pyromania

Out Of The Cellar

1984

Mechanical Resonance

She loves it all. Since that experiment worked, for Christmas this year she's getting the heavier stuff like Iron Maiden and Megadeth. That might be a little too much for her, but I'm crossing my fingers.
To me, Maiden was always different than the others. More melodic and literate. Really like them.

Get her Powerslave.

Have her read the backstory first. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancient_Mariner

Then play Rime of the Ancient Mariner / read along w/ the liner notes.

She'll be sold.

Queensryche
Never got into the "speed" or "death" side of metal.. But..

I own everything Priest put out with Halford.. all time favorite band.. no one even comes close.. :headbang:

I own a bunch of CD's from the others on your list I quoted.. Not to mention all but 12 of the "Hair Albums" in his list..

80's Metal/Hair is still the best IMO...

I side a little more with what you are into but went more for the thrash/speed metal stuff more often.I followed Paul Gilbert from his days with Racer X(did some really great stuff) into Mr Big and then on with his solo career. One thing about metal(choose whichever genre)the musicians were always really good.

I like every band he listed (way more than the hair bands in fact), but I also liked hair metal, speed metal, punk. Anything with an edge and some attitude.

Great work W, and good trip down memory lane. Can't complain much about the top 10. Maybe for my personal tastes, Def Leppard would have been knocked out of the top 10 (no need for 3 albums of theirs) and Dokken and Queensryche would have been in there.

I think my personal top 5 would have been Back for the Attack, Shout at the Devil, Out of the Cellar, Night Songs, and Pyromania. (not sure I include Mindcrime and Appetite in the hair metal umbrella, but if so, they would be 1 and 2).

Thanks again for a great thread!

Are we sure GNR belong on this list. I don't know much, only owning two albums on the list. I went to pick up some sushi for dinner and turned on hair nation. Here were the songs that came on. Tora tora-walking shoes, BulletBoys-rock hard, enuff Z nuff- fly high Michelle, tesla- little suzi and GNR- Welcome to the Jungle.

One of these is not like the others

Amazingly, I have only four of those on CD. Had quite a few more on cassette back in the 80s. Once I graduated to CDs, bands like Whitesnake, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, etc. were greatest hits kinda bands. The four I have had on CD:

1984

Slippery When Wet

Damn Yankees

Operation: Mindcrime

Very solid list - brought back some great memories.

IMO Operation Mindcrime is Top 3 All time.

It's not considered weird if all I listen to is Heavy Metal from the 80's is it? Doubt that will ever change.

The story behind it all- I was born in 1980 and when I was 3 we got cable television. My parents went to work and my babysitter, we'll call her tootsie, let me watch MTV for years. I do love other genres, but hair bands are my mother-####er.

what were the two big metal mags? I can't... wait... Circus? Circus aaaaand, I want to say Thrasher but that was the skate one... then I want to say Club or Swank but, that's not it

Could be...and I'd :boxing: you over it

One song, Photograph. Maybe Rock of Ages, after that drivel. They had a lot of potential and even corralled some of it with Pour Some Sugar On Me on Hysteria but Pyromania was waaay over rated imo compared to everything out there during that time period.

Thanks Warsteinner! This thread carried me through the last week of a cold Canadian winter and way too many trips to the mall. It sure was nice to come home and lose myself in this thread and the never ending YouTube searches that came with it.

Well said. I'm nowhere near the hair metal afficianado many of y'all in this thread are, but I had a blast tracking this thread. Thanks to my family being an early adopter of MTV I had at least heard of just about every band in the countdown, but there were many bands where I couldn't name more than one or two songs, much less have an opinion on their albums.

ETA: if you shared a story in this thread about a hair metal ex-girlfriend, hair metal concert, hair metal stripper, or just some funny #### that happened with hair metal as the soundtrack.... If you didn't get a Like from me, it's because I was out of them for the day.

Pretty good list, love the top 10.

Although Out of the Cellar would make my top 25, I do feel like the Ratt love is a bit over the top here in this forum.

Thanks for the list. Not sure my order would be the same as yours but most of the albums would be on the list. Would have added Lita Ford and probably a KISS album (after makeup removal) probably "Lick It Up" or "Animalize" but that is also probably more sentimental as KISS with Ted Nugent on the Crazy Nights Tour in 1988 was my first hair metal/metal concert.

Thank you for the great thread Wars. I love any excuse to think about my music. Have a wonderful Holiday.

I have all the albums listed except for Savage Amusement, Danger Danger, Mr Big and Hyteria. I still listen to hair bands daily. Hysteria should not be on the list. It is garbage.

I would have put Scorpions Blackout in place of Savage Amusement.

Not sure if it is a hair band and they are not as mainstream as most bands listed but Dirty Looks Cool From The Wire is a top 20 album on my list. It was released in 1987 and it fell into that genre to me. Then again, I was into bands that were not hair like Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, QR, and others. It was all just hard rock to me and my friends.

Blackout was an incredible album. As I said, I wouldn't consider them in this category.

I saw Lita Ford and Ratt open up for Twisted Sister at Pier 84 in NYC. I saw Sister so many times. I think that was the last one. Dee Snider was one of the best frontmen ever.

one song?

Rock Rock Til You Drop is a great tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7PF-rrxsxU

Too Late For Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02QjLszgz5k

Billys Got a Gun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BDBVszev5E

Comin Under Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuCJ5nRP6d0

these are all above and beyond Rock of Ages, Photograph, Foolin'. Like I said, I don't mind people preferring High N Dry, but don't talk like Pyromania wasn't a great album. Hysteria sucked and was the end of Def Leppard but those 2nd and 3rd albums were as good as any of the era

Dirty Looks had the guy who sounded a little like Bon Scott on vocals.Pretty solid album for sure.
