XFL tweaks the football rulebook
Highlights:
- running game clock except during last 2 minutes of half. I don't like this one.
I don't like it either because tradition and I appreciate good clock management, although I could possibly grow to like it - it could make games more fast paced and enjoyable to watch.
- 3-tier options for PAT (1 point/2 point/3 point). I predict that no one ever goes for 1 unless it's the end of the game and the score is tied.
I like this one a lot... hopefully the distances are well chosen.
- "shootout overtime" (each team gets 5 single plays from the 5-yard line).
I'll reserve judgement on this one to see how it plays out, but it will definitely be fun to watch.
- two forward passes are allowed on the same play, if the first one was behind the line of scrimmage.
Man, instinctively I'm against it, but it will be a differentiator with the NFL and will create a lot of new interesting play opportunities.
- only need 1 foot inbounds for a catch.
I really like this one... it should lead to some spectacular catches. It will be interesting to see if it leads to a noticeable increase in sideline passes.
- kickoffs are from 30-yard line to encourage runbacks (but touchbacks are at 35-yard-line, which kind of defeats the purpose).
I like it... it gives a team that needs to gamble the choice/opportunity to go for a run back, or teams with a good returner a chance to use that weapon.
- punt team can't leave line of scrimmage until ball is kicked
I like this as well... should be lots more punt returns now vs. fair catches.
