The AAF and XFL (1 Viewer)

so why did the AAF fail so epicly?

Serious question... idk why it collapsed so quickly
In a word: Arrogance.

Basically, they just assumed that all you needed was a TV deal, and everything else would fall into place. They got a bunch of semi-rich owners who lacked the kind of DEEEEP pockets necessary to withstand years of losses, and those owners started panicking after just a few weeks.

Yeah, all that above.  Also, they counted on the NFL helping them and figured once the league started, they couldn't say no.  They said no.

The XFL has something like enough money to run at a loss for 3 years.  So this should go 3 years regardless.  But they also have a lot more going for it.  They have practice facilities.  And good ones, at that.  They have money to pay the players for three years.  They have ESPN/ABC and FoxSports on board.  So you'll see them wanting this league to succeed.

Honestly, the AAF put all their eggs in the basket of "get the product out a year before the XFL."  They thought if they could beat them to the market, they could own the marketshare of spring football.  It was just poorly run from top to bottom.

Knowing how important game day revenue is to start up leagues, it will be interesting to see how long the XFL can survive renting out stadiums.

MLS barely stayed afloat until they started to build their own stadiums and reap the massive financial benefit of revenue control.

If y'all haven't seen WWE since Vince turned senile, you guys are in for a real treat.

8th Round pick Defensive End Corey Vereen quits XFL after learning he's only guaranteed $27,000.

It's $27,000 base salary, plus, per-game active bonuses of $1,685 and weekly win bonuses of $2,222. If he plays in 10 games, that's an extra $16,850, and if they win half, he'd get $11,110 more, bringing pay for the "average" player who plays all 10 games to $54,960.

Vereen claims he was quoted higher pay rates at the combine.
It's a minor league.  What was he expecting?  The point is prove yourself here and then make real money in the NFL.

Hmmm. I thought it was like 65 a player. Still for 3-4 months that’s ok pay.

So when he left, the reporter asked him if others would be following now that they saw how much money they'd make and he said, "Most definitely!"  Since then, exactly zero other people have backed out.

He'll be regretting that when he's working at Qwiki-Mart for $8 an hour

I think he already had a pretty high paying job and a promising career but go off.

most of these guys will have to play because it’s their last chance to improve and get noticed by the nfl. It makes sense if you have a career going already to just move on though.

Gotta say I am very stoked for this, but purely from a fantasy aspect.

Is there any word on a platform where we will be able to utilize, draft and play fantasy on this XFL league?

I'm pretty certain it will not be offered (well, maybe not year one anyway) on yahoo or ESPN, but one would think MFL or some other smaller site would jump on board with this to help get some publicity for their product.

I have a pretty massive post I have been waiting to drop about some basic league set-ups and possible roster restrictions and limits. Just a few kick around ideas anyway.

Its a given we won't be able to have "big leagues" like 10 or 12 teamers, there just won't be enough starting players it seems...... but a 6 team league could be easily doable, as long as we cut starting requirements back a bit. (Think maybe 1 QB, 1 RB, 2-3 WRs etc etc)

I have 2 other guys here locally that are willing to try a $50 or $100 per team type league, thats half of a 6 team league right there. :football:

I'd have to look back at the schedule, but I vaguely remember there being 10 weeks then 2 weeks playoffs/championship.  So a "regular season" of 8 weeks then a 2 week playoff structure for fantasy could be done with ease.

Any input on this is appreciated.

I don't think he had a high paying job, but he did have a good degree and had a promising career possibility.  I think he was saying he COULD go out and get a job with his degree that would pay more.  I could be wrong.

But yes, you are right.  This is kind of like a last chance to prove yourself to get into the NFL and make big bucks.  And while $54k isn't huge, that's pretty decent to play a game for 5 months in a year.

Uniforms are out.  I have to say, I'm impressed.  Nothing too ridiculous or over the top.  But still sleek and cool.

Not that I don't like "over the top."  I was a HUGE fan of the Orlando Thunder back in the day.  And I loved when the Rockies and Marlins entered baseball and picked unique colors.  So there's nothing wrong with that.  But in the XFL 2.0, it's probably best to stay subtle.  At least to start.

So I bought a Houston Roughnecks hat.  I'm a hat guy.  Not because I'm bald or anything, but because without product in my hair, my hair likes to stick straight up.  Not curly or like a Jew-fro.  But like I've stuck my finger in a light socket.  So on the weekends, if I'm not worrying about styling my hair, I will just throw a ball cap on.  Anyway, it's a pretty sweet hat.  All black.

Honestly, I really like the Dallas ones but as a fan of Philly and Houston, not a chance in hell I'd be caught dead wearing a hat from that town.

Dragons and Renegades = Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans.

Any word on fantasy leagues, and potential sites that will host leagues for us sickos?

Supposedly starts a week after the Super Bowl, and it will cut down our off season dramatically. (roughly 2 months)

Looking forward to a small league of  this when the time comes.

XFL tweaks the football rulebook

Highlights:

- running game clock except during last 2 minutes of half. I don't like this one.

- 3-tier options for PAT (1 point/2 point/3 point). I predict that no one ever goes for 1 unless it's the end of the game and the score is tied.

- "shootout overtime" (each team gets 5 single plays from the 5-yard line).

- two forward passes are allowed on the same play, if the first one was behind the line of scrimmage.

- only need 1 foot inbounds for a catch.

- kickoffs are from 30-yard line to encourage runbacks (but touchbacks are at 35-yard-line, which kind of defeats the purpose).

- punt team can't leave line of scrimmage until ball is kicked

I don't like it either because tradition and I appreciate good clock management, although I could possibly grow to like it - it could make games more fast paced and enjoyable to watch.

I like this one a lot... hopefully the distances are well chosen.

- "shootout overtime" (each team gets 5 single plays from the 5-yard line).

I'll reserve judgement on this one to see how it plays out, but it will definitely be fun to watch.

- two forward passes are allowed on the same play, if the first one was behind the line of scrimmage.

Man, instinctively I'm against it, but it will be a differentiator with the NFL and will create a lot of new interesting play opportunities.

- only need 1 foot inbounds for a catch.

I really like this one... it should lead to some spectacular catches.  It will be interesting to see if it leads to a noticeable increase in sideline passes.

- kickoffs are from 30-yard line to encourage runbacks (but touchbacks are at 35-yard-line, which kind of defeats the purpose).

I like it... it gives a team that needs to gamble the choice/opportunity to go for a run back, or teams with a good returner a chance to use that weapon.

- punt team can't leave line of scrimmage until ball is kicked

I like this as well... should be lots more punt returns now vs. fair catches.

I like the running game clock and 25-second play clock. Should speed up the tempo of the games.

I really like the PAT options: 1 pt from the 2, 2 pts from the 5, and 3 pts from the 10. I hope someone on each coaching staff has done some analytics on success rates from these distances in the NFL. It will be interesting to see which distance becomes the norm.

I'm skeptical about the shootout. Hopefully it will make it more interesting than the NFL's overtime.

If the running clock can cut down on commercials, I am all for it.  I would be fine with a 2.75 hour game if that is the goal.

The 2 point play is from the 3 according to the article

=============================

Three options after scoring a touchdown: a 1-point play from the 2-yard line, a 2-point play from the 3-yard line or a 3-point play from the 10-yard line.

Is this like throwing a screen pass, the catcher makes a 10 yard gain and then can throw it any where he wants on the field?

Yep, exactly. This was actually the rule for high school football until 2005.

Kickoff rules are more interesting than I've seen reported:

The kicker kicks from the 25-yard line and must kick the ball in the air and in play between the opponent’s 20-yard line and the end zone.

The coverage team lines up on the return side 35-yard line and the return team lines up on the 30-yard line. Each team must have exactly 3 players outside the hash marks on both sides of the ball and cannot move until the ball is caught by the returner.

Out of bounds kicks and kicks that fall short of the 20-yard line will result in an illegal procedure penalty, taking the ball all the way out to the kicking team’s 45 yard line.

Players can move when the ball is touched by the returner or 3 seconds after the ball touches the ground (when the official waves his hand down).

If the ball is kicked into the end zone and is downed it is a “Major” touchback and the ball is placed at the return side 35-yard line.

If the ball bounces in bounds and then out of the end zone or is downed in the end zone, the ball is placed at the return side 15-yard line.

If a player on the return team touches the ball and it goes out of bounds, the ball is spotted where it went out of bounds.

If a team wishes to run an onside kick, it must indicate this to the official before the play and the two teams will be permitted to line up using traditional NFL rules (i.e. 10 yards apart from the kicking team). There will be no surprise onside kicks.

They should treat out of bounds like a WWE lumberjack match.  Opposition guy goes out of bounds and the team can rough him up a bit before throwing him back in bounds.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think pretty much all of those rules are fantastic and would welcome them into the NFL immediately.

The XFL homepage does a great job talking about all of the rules.  They break down each rule, show the NFL rule, the college rule and then explain why they have the rule they have.

agreed. those video clips explaining the 2nd forward pass, the kickoff and punt rules, etc. are all very well done and short & sweet.

In the context of how they’re actually trying to implement it, I see nothing wrong with it.
Yeah, honestly, I kind of want to see what kind of plays will come out of this.  Something tells me either this will be something that you see once a season, or you see every team doing every game.  Could go either way.  But right now, I'm thinking each team might have one trick play with this.  And that's about it.
