*** The Amazing Race 24: All Stars; Sunday Feb. 23 *** (2 Viewers)

Watched this today. Like others I am glad to see one of the annoying/whiny teams go home.

Really seems like this race is the Cowboys or the Afganimals to lose.

So I take it this show is often pushed late due to sports + 60 Minutes? DVR didn't record the last 10/12 minutes. And CBS' website player seems a bit changed from when I last used it (to watch Survivor), and it would not let me skip ahead to the end. I wouldn't have cared if it put all the commercials in (although that would be greedy) as long as they let you skip ahead. I know it sometimes works, because it did let me skip ahead part of a section, just not all the way to the part I missed.

I actually have a 90 minute padding for this show. Shouldn't need that much for this spring season, but definitely comes in handy during football season.

I don't hate Luke and his mom nearly as much as the rest of you. I can't fault him for his handicap. Sure he's a little over the top, but his mom pretty much rocks. Nowhere near as annoying as the Twinnies, Bloggers or Brenchel. I put them in the same boat as the Afghanimals, who I find extremely annoying from time to time, but strangely likable.
I agreed with you until you compared them to the Afghanimals. I find nothing likable about the Afghanimals.

I hated them the first half of last season, but they grew on me. Especially after they started calling the doctors on their hypocrisy.

I don't think anyone hates him for being deaf. The dislike for him seems to be that if he can't get something on the first try, he breaks down and cries for mommy.

Not a fan of Afghanimals either. They're not quite on the Twinnies/Youtubers level but they're close.

Yeah, that's what I mean by "over the top" - but at the same time, if he didn't have his handicap, would his 'tantrum' be less obvious? I think so. I give him a little clearance for that. And again, his mom is awesome.

He really should have done that challenge.

I don't think so. Pretty sure we've ragged on hearing enabled racers before for doing the same thing.

How did they get that chick from Kentucky to replace Bopper so quickly? Do they keep an extra team on standby just in case something like this happens?

(by the way, how funny was it that Phil is in the room with the doctor, when the dude is finds out he has 2 months to live?)

That's the only thing I can think of. Part of me wonders if Bopper knew that it might be a problem so AR planned ahead and brought another team just in case.

I believe both Amazing Race and Survivor have additional players on standby at the start of each season. The potential impact of not having a team ready is huge... expensive delays and possibly missing the airdates. IIRC, same thing happened at the start of the last season of Survivor, where Candace and her husband were last-minute additions to the cast, which led to her being voted out first since none of the other returning players knew her that well.

Amazing Race also keeps racing the eliminated teams toward the end of the season. Although we only see the "final 3" competing for the prize in the last episode, the previous 2 or 3 eliminated teams keep racing on a 12 hour offset (at least one team 12 hours ahead, one 12 hours behind) to throw off anyone who might see a camera crew in an airport and post spoilers before they're even done filming.

That's interesting, that some teams keep racing after being philiminated. I didn't know that.

I've always wondered how much of the roadblocks/detours they make the eliminated teams do. Honestly, if I was eliminated and had to keep on racing, and then got the task of "carry a dead cow to booth in a crowded market 5 miles away" I would just say "#### it." and move on.

Yeah, unless the roadblock/detour was "sit at a local bar and drink a bunch of beer" then I would be taking an awful lot of skip-the-task penalties if they made me do them when I was eliminated. I might do some of the cool zipline, hang gliding, etc. sort of task.

I think they only have to do the running around from one location to another, and the flying from city to city. Once they're out of sight of the general public, they're not needed. The show is mostly worried about people in the US seeing them on the last leg or two once they're close to the finish line, and the tasks near the end tend to be in closed-off locations anyway where the general public can't spot them. Closed parks, airstrips, etc.

I don't hate Luke and his mom nearly as much as the rest of you. I can't fault him for his handicap. Sure he's a little over the top, but his mom pretty much rocks. I think they really loaded up on annoying teams for this round.

I don't like the Afghanaimals. I actually think a lot of what they do is Shick to tv. And it gets them noticed.

For casting an All Stars season, I like the idea of getting teams that were eliminated early. It would be great to watch them stumble and bumble through the tasks and challenges. Even better if we get lots of eye candy, which is lacking. We got the Twinnies for half of the all girls teams.

It wasn't until watching the episode that I really knew who some of the teams were, and I forgot how annoying some of them are. Am thrilled about the Twinnies being gone.

I'd be happy if any of the following won: Connor/Dad (achilles heel), Leo and Jamal (I like them for some reason), Cowboys, Globetrotters

I'd be happy if I never saw any of the following again: Mother/Deaf Son, Youtubers, Twinnies

I don't really care one way or the other: Country Singers, Mark/Mallory (though she went to my alma mater so I should probably cheer her on), Mark and Mallory, Brenchel (I must have missed their first season because I've never heard of them, but if they named themselves "Brenchel", I want to punch them both in the neck).
You never watched Big Brother?

Not YSR, but same here. Only ever watched a few episodes of the first season of Big Brother. Thought it was pretty bad, Benchel seems to confirm that opinion.

Bummer... was hoping for more from them.

Odd but good use of the express pass. Still, those last two teams should have gone and not the last one.

Margie is a monster. At first I was ticked off as usual at Luke for making his mom do all the hard stuff... seems like he just wants to be dragged around on the race... but then she blew through that task and they made it out second. Hell of a deal. He could have handled coming in second better as well.

While I get Mallory's viewpoint that going back for the backkpack would cost them the game (though had they been more skilled at hackeycock or perhaps did the other detour, they would've survived) there's almost always a leg that takes place in a cold weather climate. Not realistic for him to survive in cargo pants and a t-shirt.

Kind of my thoughts as well. If they end up in the snow he would have been screwed. The sad thing is that if Bopper had been with him and he said he needed to go back, rather than an argument he would have just gotten "ok buddy, let's do that then."

I don't understand why they didn't go back as soon as they noticed the bag was missing.

I think it was a smart move for the Cowboys to give the express pass away to the country singers, however it kind of sucks for everyone else. The country singers probably would of still been putting the car together when the others got to the pit stop. Nice for the cowboys to get it out of the way though.

Seems that giving away the express pass early is the way to go. Don't allow a few legs of angst and anger to build up against them.

they couldn't go back after the leg check-in?

Pretty sure that this is not allowed.

I'd like to know the rule. I see teams all the time leaving their pack somewhere and racing to the finish line. Maybe it's best that team lost since they don't know each other and I was getting the feeling Mark wanted to wring her neck or something.

From what I've gather over the years, if a team drops their packs on the grounds of the pit stop to make that final dash, they can go get them. However, anything left beyond the grounds of the pit stop can not be retrieved. (One season, a player left their shoes at a roadblock and could not get them. He ended up buying new shoes at the airport.)

I don't know if the full rulebook is on survivorsucks, but the general consensus opinion seems to be that a team goes straight from the pit stop location to the hotel and can't leave the area during the rest period. Can't go out sightseeing or make calls home, I think, during the downtime. Also, can't beg for money or supplies in the off-hours, everything has to happen during the running of the leg. So if they drop the bags in the run to the mat, within visual sight of the pit stop, that's within the pit stop location and they can pick the bag back up before leaving it. But they can't go anywhere else between there and the hotel.

Maybe, they could have left the backpack there and then at the start of the next leg driven by and seen if it survived overnight. But there's a lot of risk in that.

Hope you vets don't mind some more noob questions - do the teams get a set amount of cash for each leg, or are they paying for taxis/etc. on their own dime? (My assumption is that there is some sort of "allowance" so each team has equal chances money-wise, but wasn't sure). Obviously the players are on their own as far as clothing/supplies beyond what is provided during the game. What about travel, like the plane tickets in the beginning episode, the tickets are paid for? I saw a part of a flashback about someone in an earlier season somehow getting on an earlier flight, that just by negotiating with the airlines, or can they alter their travel arrangements however they can in order to try to get an advantage?

Also, I noticed no one has a cell phone/GPS...are those not allowed or is it just that they don't work because they are in a different country? ( i can completely understand why they couldn't have their personal phones, but seems like a smartphone would be extraordinarily helpful. (Gamebreaking so?)

I was going to ask about what happens at the end of one leg before the start of another, but that was literally just answered last post (whisked away to a hotel/lodging until the next leg starts.)

Good questions.

They get a set amount of money for each leg, and when they tear open their initial clues for the leg, it says how much and (I believe) the clue envelope contains the cash. (If not, someone from production promptly hands it to them.) The airline tickets are not paid for in advance - - that comes out of the "leg budget." It hasn't happened yet this season, I don't think, but often the producers will make sure that one team opening the initial clue reads the amount of cash for the benefit of the audience.

They're not allowed to have cell phones during the race.

They stay in pretty decent hotels between pit stops. Occasionally they'll show one of the rooms.

Aerial Assualt is right about the allowance, each leg all teams are given a set amount in US dollars to get them started. The money can roll over from one leg to another, and teams can amass cash. Cash is used for taxis or other transportation or for whatever comes up during the game. If they get hungry during a layover at an airport, they'll have to use that cash to eat. Some legs they get $0 and must rely on whatever they've stockpiled. If they run out of cash, they can beg or negotiate lower fares. They cannot sell any belongings for money. They allowed it in the past, but after one team made it a habit once and started bringing items along to sell later, they've put a stop to it. Producers did not want to open the floodgates where well-off contestants would wear a Rolex or something and hope to trade it for a giant advantage near the finish line.

The only thing cash doesn't cover is airline tickets. Those are paid for via credit card that each team has. The show picks up that bill, and the racers must buy four tickets, two for them plus camera & sound guy. There must be room for all four or they can't get on the flight. If there's time, they will refilm the purchase with the travel agent or airline rep to record the team asking for two tickets, but it's always been four. The show will only pay for coach/economy fare. Racers can only sit in another class (first/business) if the upgrade is free, and for all four tickets.

Sometimes the "earlier flight" thing comes up a few different ways. Sometimes a team will be willing to risk a short (less than 1 hour) layover to connect on a different flight that other teams don't want to risk. Sometimes they will be willing to fly standby. Other times teams are just better at searching for other options, especially with layovers and connections, that airline agents don't see. Like, a team flying from Frankfurt to Dubai might get a 8-hour layover in Cairo offered to them by the travel agent, where another team might work the timetables harder and find a trip like Frankfurt, flying the other direction to London, express to Moscow, and then Dubai and get in an hour or more before. Other times, the reward for completing a task first is a guaranteed ticket on an "earlier flight" than the teams that don't get it.

They can buy as many coach tickets as they want, as long as they're coach... I believe in one season a team booked a tight connection, and figuring they might miss it, had the foresight to book the next flight out just in case. Another time a team bought two flights out of the airport just in case they either arrived late or one might have had a chance of not taking off on time because of where the plane was coming in from. Something like that.

No one can bring a personal phone. They are allowed to try and talk a local into using his for them.

If a player can buy shoes at an airport, then Mark should be able to buy clothes. As much as the other racers love Mark, I think they would have found a way to get him a new backpack and clothes.
They've had that happen before and those people always got what they needed. Sometimes they had to "work" for money, but they always got what they needed. They should have gone back right away if they were going to do it. The taxi driver would have known exactly where to go back to and the bag was there. Maybe they don't lose if they don't **** around.

That said, after watching it to the end last night (I came in during the middle while my son watched it) and watching the beginning, while it was Mallory's fault, she did bring the bag all the way out to where they were waiting for the taxi. She didn't leave it at the roadblock itself. I would lay equal blame on both for not checking. She shouldn't have assumed he would grab it himself since he was putting the car in the taxi and he shouldn't have assumed she would grab it for him since she put it down next to the car when they got to the taxis.

All contestants should locate their bags before leaving anywhere, so in that sense he should have checked and known. But, IMO, she was responsible for his bag until she turned over responsibility to him. You don't just drop a bag at someone's feet, it has to include verbal communication and acknowledgement.

Agreed, which is why I put equal blame on them. They never raced together, so no assumptions if you want to win.

so many mistakes in this show just because teams won't SLOW DOWN and breathe. Misread clues, left-behind passports, bad flight choices, etc.

Like Rachel just tearing away from the starting line in this leg, and Brendan says "where are you going?" and she's just running randomly away.

Just to add on to the plane discussion. Pretty sure the show blacklists certain carriers and in some legs, restricts teams to certain airlines/flight #'s so the teams don't find a much quicker route. Also, teams aren't allowed to buy up empty seats anymore. I think they used to use cash and some teams would buy up any extra tickets but this is no longer available.
