The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

Anyone have any experience with a bike handlebar mount for your iPhone (in case) that you would recommend?
I will dig the name and such of mine up, but a while ago I bought a speaker that mounted on your handlebars. They are Bluetooth and have a mic. The idea being that you really shouldn't do to much with the telephone while you are moving, the same as a car. I haven't hooked it up to a bike, since I haven't had one for a really long time until this last weekend.

Edit: The brand is CyFi and when I looked it up on Amazon where I bought it, it was significantly more expensive than what I paid for it (~$200) - I wouldn't have paid that much for it.)

Also, when is the new phone coming out, I'm ready to upgrade but am getting tired of waiting (I have a 4S).
The latest rumors are the "5S" has been pushed back past the original Sep/Oct date to change the screen size...

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-17/apple-may-delay-introduction-of-iphone-5s-commercial-times-says.html

... which seems like a completely bizarre rumor but if the rumors that the retina-display-ipad-mini won't launch until after the holidays then anything might be true. Also, they supposedly went on a recent hiring spree to work on the iwatch that everyone thought was just around the corner...

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57593675-37/apple-reportedly-aggressively-hiring-talent-for-iwatch-project/
That is bizarre. I can't imagine a scenario where they have decided to change the screen size. That isn't a small adjustment and would likely require a reconfiguration of everything inside and would be a multi-month process. Remember, the 5 was in design before the 4S was released...the design cycle and fitting the factory isn't something that can be changed over the weekend.

Complete phone moron here.

We're with T-Mobile and my oldest son wants an iPhone. I'm not gonna drop $600 for an iPhone 5. What are my options here? Can I get an older version that'll work with T-mobile?

TIA

you can get an unlocked 4s in the 300 range these days. Maybe less by now. I haven't really looked into it in awhile.

I just broke the back glass of my iP4. Anyone have a website they recommend for replacement glass?
I bought the brushed metal back from this web site:http://iphone4parts.com/shop/verizon-back-panels-c-97_141.html?osCsid=91aff2d20d5e0b0d15718498c149fea4

And ordered the tool kit as well to get out the two tiny screws at the base of the phone to be able to slide out the old glass.

Literally takes a total of 1 minute to swap.
Thanks

you could swap for a custom one. They make some pretty cool ones. imo the clear ones are the best

So just a heads up for anyone that has an iPhone 5. My speaker died, from what I have been reading online this is becoming a common occurrence. If you plan on using your phone for more than a year, I'd suggest picking up the Apple care starting your second year (first year I think most everything is covered). I use the speaker on my phone (speaker phone) quite a bit, probably 8-10 hours per week on business calls. I'm not sure if this is what caused it to burn out. The speaker was not completely dead, but it got to the point where it was not reliable. The speaker replacement would have cost me $59 if it wasn't still under the 1 year warranty. This wasn't due to water damage, they checked for that first.

I just tried to replace the front glass in mine. Right as I was putting everything back together, I broke one of the cables that is attached to the new front screen. Probably the most frustrating experience I've had in recent memory. I'm just going to buy a new phone rather than try and do that again - not a simple process.

Tried searching the thread but it became too cumbersome. Any recommendations on a basic/cheap/reliable case to protect the 4S? Just want something that is relatively slim to prevent it from minor drops and bumps. Already have a screen protector.

Any solid rumors on the 5c specs yet?

I've seen photos of the case and to looks small, light, and plastic so I might make the switch if the price is right. I'm tired of waiting for the price on the MAXX android phones to come down. Battery life and price are my #1a/1b concerns in a phone. Size/Weight closely follow. Couldn't care less about the screen and have no idea why so many people obsess about it unless it's your only computer and you only use a phone for internet(I do know a few people like that).

My contract is up in another year, so I hope Apple increases the screen size, but not up to the stupid Samsung Mega or the other mega displays. The size of the HTC One and the build seems cool to me (I'm on a GS3), although I haven't had a hands on yet.

If Apple's next iPhone is the same size as the iPhone 5... Apple walked into the stupid fan. The only reason I have not switched yet is because the alternative phone is too expensive. The next phone better be as big as the new Samsung S4 otherwise people are going to jump ship by the thousands if not worse.

I don't disagree with you that it could stand to be bigger. I like my 5 just fine but would be totally cool with the screen stretching out another 3/8 or 1/2 an inch.

But i don't know it it will cause people to leave the platform if they keep it the same.

The new Nokia has a 4.5" screen

The Samsung S4 has a 5" screen

The iPhone 5 has a 4" screen

Apple's "refusal" to grow it is costing them their customers who tend to be younger. The innovation is all but gone. Don't know if 5" is the right size or not but it is a definite improvement. Reading on the phone is not a welcome but a larger screen would make an iBooks app great plus the web browsing.

I will say, if you go to Macrumors.com, they have a mockup of a 12" iPad. Not sure how much that would be but that thing is freaking huge. I think the current size of the iPad is pretty good although I think they should update it with widescreen instead of a "square".

I'm an old fart and all, but I really don't understand the recent obsession with bigger devices. I ####### hate having #### in my pockets, so my phone should be the perfect blend of size and legibility/viewability. I would totally try the S4 if it wasn't the size of a ### ####ed boombox.

Agree 100%. And a phone is not a fashion accessory that goes on your belt. Love the guys that have a Samsung s4 on their belt, looks like a fanny bag just turned on their hip.

I disagree.

IMO what has cost apple phone customers hasn't been their refusal to chase android in terms of screen size(they'll never "catch up" in that battle, there are simply too many phones being launched all the time) it's the fact their hasn't been enough new features to drive people to pay the premium price for an upgrade. That's why the 4 and 4s are still selling so well. There is now a phone launching with 48 hour battery life.. the average iphone user I know would rather be able to get through a FULL day with heavy use and not have to worry about the battery at all. I think that requires 20+ hours battery life which has been knocking around the market for more than a year from the M and older MAXX phones. The M isn't even an expensive phone. A 20 hour iphone5 at a reasonable price(made of plastic is fine as it's lighter) and I would make the switch and I know several iphone users that would upgrade as well.

Maybe my use case is unique but I don't read many books or even web browse on my phone all that often. If I need to do that the latest Nexus 7 is impossible to beat, not just an iphone but any phone imo. At $230(no contract) it's perfect for reading/browsing. My phone is used 95% of the time for clock/communications/audio/gps/maps/directions. Again, the only thing more silly than a 5+" screen in my pocket is a 1080p screen in my pocket.

BTW I would absolutely love a 12"+ tablet, or actually even a 13.3"+ tablet but it would need to replace my laptop. I have an 10" Asus Prime that leaves the house with me much more often than a full blown laptop but a 13.3" surface pro(w/10+ battery life) would definitely be better. I think there is a market out there for a larger productivity type tablet.

I think all three types of devices specialize in certain areas and prices are dropping to the point most of us will own at least two of these:

- ~4"phone, never leave home without, mostly audio/texts/clock/camera

- ~7"tablet, mostly used around the house or on trips when in a seat for extended times, for reading/browsing/short videos

- ~13"tablet, best used at a desk, for doing actual work and watching extended video like movies

Trying to use a phone that is all things to all people is like cooking a Thanksgiving dinner with a swiss army pocket knife 'cos that's your knife for all things. The galaxy devices are trying to do just that and the biggest mistake apple could make is chasing samsung down that rabbit hole. The only reason I'd suggest anyone get a galaxy phone is if that was going to be the only computer they own.

Circle Sept. 10 on Your Calendar for Apple’s Big iPhone Event
AUGUST 10, 2013 AT 4:22 PM PT

Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone at a special event on Sept. 10, sources toldAllThingsD.

D: All Things Digital
The launch comes at an important time for Apple, which continues to make a lot of money from the iPhone but has seen its global market share dip amid a growing wave of lower-cost Android devices as well as an intense battle with archrival Samsung.

One of the key questions is whether Apple adopts a new tactic to address the mid-range of the smartphone market. Historically, Apple has gone after those customers by offering its year-old and two-year-old models for $100 and $200 less than a new iPhone. However, there has been a great deal of talk that the company will debut a new lower-cost iPhone alongside whatever update it has in store for the current iPhone 5.

Much of the speculation there has centered on the usual kinds of camera and processor enhancements, as well as the likelihood of a fingerprint sensor. That has been expected ever since Apple acquired Authentec last year.

Naturally, any new phones will be running iOS 7, which has been in testing since its announcement at Apple’s developer conference in June. The new software includes aradical redesign of the overall look of the iPhone’s menus and icons, but the other new features are largely incremental updates, such as improved notifications, better photo-organizing abilities and additional capabilities for developers.

This has become something of a pattern for Apple, which typically debuts its software update at its June developer conference, tests it for a couple months, then shows the new hardware a couple weeks ahead of the new phone’s availability. The iOS update is also available for older models. Apple has already said that iOS 7 will work on many recent iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices.

Apple is also expected to formally launch the next version of Mac OS X, known as Mavericks, in the coming weeks, though that is not expected at the Sept. 10 event.

An Apple representative declined to comment on the timing of any upcoming events.

Consumers, investors (and reportedly board members as well) have been pressing Apple for a more rapid pace of innovation.

The company has long been rumored to also be working on television and watch projects, though there is no indication either of those are close to debuting.

ive been playing blood & honor lately its a free risk game you can play online. let me know if anyone else gets hooked

A larger tablet would be awesome. Using one for music charts would be one great reason for me to purchase a larger tablet alone, especially with stylus support.

I think I hate my iPhone5. It's sluggish and freezes way more than my 4 did. Also, it actually is too thin. The slight difference in thickness has really made it much more difficult for me to type on it or to hold it in in vertical position. My next phone will need to be bigger. It's much more slippery and easier to drop or mishandle as well.

Get the otterbox defender. I love my case, much less bulkier than previous version, but still pretty thin. I think otterbox hit the sweet spot on the 5 case with size and still keeping it safe (my kids have dropped it a ton).

The only thing I don't like about the 5 is that it seems like the battery is much worse than the 4S I used to have. Other than that, it is way better than the 4S, which was a slight step up from the 4. I don't have any freezing issues, but with my kids, I tend to shut down applications running in the background every once in a while.

Why not get a battery Case (boost case is great) that not only protects the phone like the otterbox, but also more than doubles the battery life. Boom. Best of both worlds.

Can someone explain the icould to me like I am a 4th grader

My basic understanding is that my files, contacts, pictures etc are backed up to some server in the cloud.

What I dont understand is what else is being backed up

When I had the free 5GB, I got a message saying my cloud was full and I needed to upgrade. The cost was not much so I did. Now I get the same message. Im backing up my ipad and iphone 4.

I have already turned off every app that was being backed up. The way I read it all I am backing up now is my contacts (maybe 120) and pictures. How is the taking up 15GB

Any help figuring this out would be appreciated. Im not upgrading again and the message every time I connect to power is annoying

Is it backing up music as well?

you could just go to icloud.com and see what is there

So, testing bigger screens... um, finally. What size or sizes will be settled on?

Not sure if people will want a 6" screen unless there is no bezel on the thing. Samsung may have found the sweet spot with the current Galaxy. Maybe a little thicker for build purposes (with the thought that an Otter Box type cover may be needed) or for components and such. They need this model quick though.

Check to see if you have some large attachments in your email, although seems odd that you would have 15GBs of attachments.

I have so many thousands of pics plus music, etc. that I don't even bother backing up on iCloud. 5 gb on 64 gb devices? Yeah that helps.

I remember when there was easily 100 people in this thread an hour before an Apple keynote. Now its just me

I think I might upgrade from the 4 to the new one if I can keep my unlimited. If I cant, not sure

I have a 4 with the unlimited thru Verizon. I have passed my 2 year. I am thinking of upgrading too.

It is comforting to know you have unlimited. But I don't think I go anywhere near 2G each month, how high do you go?

I go high because my son watches netflix ALL the time. I have never checked to see though.

Gazelle has $315 for good condition 5 right now.

Not planning on getting the new one but they might reel me in.

Also, gazelle for 3GS is $10 American.
