The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

Mobileme is the new .mac site for email, calendar, etc....

www.me.com

Problem is it only supports Safari and Firefox....this is ridiculous!

A lot of is corporate users only have IE 6 at work, and can't change browsers....poor decision by Apple. Hope they fix it!

From Apple site...

For your PC: Safari 3, Mozilla Firefox 2 or 3, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. Note: Internet Explorer 7 is not fully supported. Internet Explorer 7 has known compatibility issues with modern web standards that affect web 2.0 applications, such as MobileMe. You can use Internet Explorer 7, but you will not have access to all MobileMe features and will experience slower performance.
Apple doesn't have to "fix" anything; MS has to fix their browsers.Eventually I'm sure Apple will do what everyone else does and eventually add a bunch of hacks and workarounds to me.com to get around the IE compliance issues.

Anyone have a me.com account? I'd love the push email but don't know if it's really worth $99/yr or whatever the fee is.

evidently i just turned my phone into a brick updating to 2.0. lovely.
Is it just waiting to be activated or what? Why do call it a brick?I ask, because a lot of people were saying their iphone was a brick on Friday, when they bought it but were unable to activate it. Bricked iphones are something entirely different. Odds are though, at this point, if you can't activate it, its' not a good sign and may truly be bricked. There are quite a few people who have that issue, and I bet if you searched around some, you might be able to find a fix for it.
i went home at lunch and did the update. it didn't finish in the hour that i was home. so i remoted into my pc at home and it said something about a failure. now itunes doesn't recognize that there's an iphone even connected.
I know a couple of people who "jacked" their phones (or whatever the term is, can't remember right now. Edit - jailbreak. Just remembered. ) and now their phone is useless. This is unrelated to the server issue from Friday. I believe that if you are trying to update a V1 phone to V2 and it's failing, you may have done something to your phone outside the service agreement.
i didn't jailbreak it. was too scared to do that. i tried once, but i just revirginized it.

Ouch. have you tried searching other iphone forums for help on how to fix it?
nah. i restarted and it came back up. like i said, i'm not at home with the phone in front of me. so it's hard for me to tell what's going on. i sent a bunch of apps to it. i guess i'll see when i get home. just relieved that it's not completely jacked.

So what color 16GB did you iPhone 3G owners (or soon to be owners) go with? I'm having a hard time deciding between the black or white.

What does the FFA recommend?

The white looks pretty sick, but with a mandatory 3yr contract I thought the black was safer.

If I were to buy one (and I'm tempted) it would be white -- the cool new color, and much more Apple looking...

I'm totally in love with pandora. :hot:
I love Pandora as well but find myself listening to KROQ2 on AOL radio all the time.I"m either buying a head unit with ipod controls or a fm transmitter type controller for the car
I'm particularly impressed with the iphone pandora combo. I listen to it at work, on the coorporate wifi, and as I walk out, it transitions seamlessly to 3G and I don't miss a beat. Get home, hop onto my personal wifi, again, no beat missed - quite literally.Pretty impressive. Can't wait to see what future iphone programs are coming.

3 yr contract? Why'd you have to get a 3 yr contract?Oh, and white is the way to go.
That's how it works in Canada. :bs:

No problem. You can use up the contract while waiting to see a doctor. :X

Another reason to consider an iPhone:

iPhoneAlley notes that AT&T has once again posted information on their website indicating that all iPhone customers have free access to their more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots access across the U.S., including Starbucks locations:

AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi hotspot network with more than 17,000 hotspots, including Starbucks*. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail and web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location.

AT&T provides an online tool to find a Wi-Fi spot near you.

We had first reported on this topic back in April when AT&T had turned the feature on at hotspot locations across the U.S. This was quickly disabled just a few days later. Another week after that, AT&T advertised the new feature on their iPhone website, and again quickly removed it. When the service was active, AT&T simply required you to enter your current iPhone phone number as authentication.

There was some speculation that the delay was due to the fact that they had not yet completed their Wi-Fi deployment at Starbucks. AT&T had won the Starbucks contract from T-Mobile in February and is already offering free Wi-Fi access for their DSL and business customers.

Ahhh, sucky deal. Is that common in Canada or just specific to this phone?

For all of you iPhone users, how is it as an actual phone? I am at the end of my Verizon contract, need another phone, am not enamored with the selections from Verizon and was thinking about getting an iPhone. I have been following this thread and it's just swaying me more and more in that direction but since I tend to travel a good bit for work, I am going to need a decent phone much of the time.

Everything the iPhone does makes it sound like a no-brainer but I haven't really heard anyone comment on it's primary(?) function, being a phone.

It really varies based on location.I'm in a top 100 market, but bottom half. Just got 3G recently, and the reception is excellent. The phone is improved over the first gen, speakerphone is better, sounds clearer. And my reception is improved on 3G as I get it in areas where before I wouldn't get reception. But again, that's just my area.

Engagdet did a poll. http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/17/poll-ho...e-3g-reception/

Check some iphone forums for your area, or areas you travel to most often.

Also, just know it doesn't have voice dialing...tha'ts a biggie for many who travel a lot for work...but an app might be released soon that supplies that functionality.

Have you looked at the LG Dare? I'll probably end up getting this instead of the IPhone because Verizon's coverage is so much better where I am. Anyway, I've played around with the Dare a little and read a lot of reviews, and I think I'd be happy with it.

I am aware of it, but haven't looked into it too much because I have been sucked in by all the iPhone coverage. I get great coverage through Verizon and wouldn't want to lose that but I haven't been happy with the options to replace my current phone. I did just get something in the mail from Verizon offering the Dare at $99.99 so I may have to take a closer look. It just seems to be an also-ran when compared to all the cool #### that the iPhone offers, especially the apps.

Maybe so, but the Dare seems to be the best of the also-rans out there. It also has a few features that Iphone doesn't, such as the voice commands, a better camera, and a battery you can replace yourself. I think the phone itself is getting higher marks as well. That's not to say it's better piece of hardware than the Iphone - the nav system and browser aren't as good, and I like the way Iphone zooms better. And yeah, those apps are pretty sweet. But it's another option, all depending on what features are most important. I only bring it up because I didn't know if you had any further information that might discourage me from getting one before I sign anything. Sorry for the hijack.

So does anyone know if this is possible?

When I work remotely I (BT) pair my blackberry phone with my laptop so that I have (3G) internet access. As calls come in I can accept calls (but not surf while talking).

Does the iphone allow simultaneous PAM + Voice? PAM = (phone as a modem)

Does any phone allow this or do I need another cell phone so I can be on a conference call and see a webex presentation at the same time?

I don't think you can tether the iphone at all, at this point, so I'd say no.

 . If that's what you need it for, it's not for you. Can't sync over bluetooth either. Doesn't have stereo bluetooth either. No voice dialing. No copy/paste. It's not ideal for everyone.

It's shiny as well, so yes, you could use it as a man vanity mirror. It also picks up fingerprints like magnets attract metal.

If you suspected someone of being a fugitive from justice, just hand them the iphone to look at it, then run the prints at your nearest crime lab and you could be a hero.

It's very useful for CSI teams, yet another undocumented feature. iBust

Got my 3G (16GB black) on Friday. The difference in mail/surf speed is as pronounced as I was expecting.

The manager of my local AT&T store told me I was one of the lucky ones as they were getting almost random fulfullment of the phones. The first batch of backordered phones the store received included the phones for both her first and last customer to backorder on release day and both were 16GB black, the most popular model they sold.

where did you get one? I've been checking daily at the AT&T store on Hacks Cross @ Winchester and they haven't had any.

I went by the one in Cordova (north Germantown Parkway) on release day. I didn't get there until after 10 because I had a first gen in hand and didn't feel like waiting in line. The phones were long gone by the time I got there but they were taking backorders that day, so I went ahead and placed a backorder and paid for the phone. Apparently, once you're on the backorder list, the orders are fulfilled by AT&T corporate, but in no particular order. The store manager told me that her store got an initial shipment of 20(!) phones. I can guarantee because of the location this would have been one of the more heavy-volume iPhone selling stores in town. At the same time, she said, the Apple Store in Saddle Creek received somewhere around 2,000(!) phones, and they were still selling through them until early Sunday afternoon following release day, but with long lines all the way through the sell-out. She said that there are still a ton of people that backordered from her store on release day that have not received theirs yet.

I went to the Apple Store this weekend to pick up a case and screen shield for the phone and they have a prominent sign right by the entrance saying that they are sold out of iPhones. You can check this link: http://www.apple.com/retail/saddlecreek/ each night after 9:00 PM to see if any iPhones are scheduled to go on sale there the following morning. I'm thinking that would be the best bet for the next couple of weeks.

Apple announcing earnings within the next hour. Stock dumped earlier today, and has rebounded to be slightly up for the day (~ .80).

Any predictions?

Doesn't include iphone information, but I still expect earnings to be up above estimates.Their notebook market share has risen, as have their imac market shares. Dunno if it's already priced in yet, but I can't imagine the success of the itunes store and the demand for the iphone 3G has been efficiently factored in to their current price. These things are flying off the shelves and the itunes store is selling things left and right.

so you say apple is a buy at 166, right before close and earnings.we'll see. :)

I'm guessing earnings to be down slightly. iPhone v.1 was in short supply/unavailable for a few months before the 3G release.

I'm guessing earnings to be down slightly. iPhone v.1 was in short supply/unavailable for a few months before the 3G release.
True, but those earnings are reported, for the iphone at least, spread out over a 2 year period, so even a moderate downtick for a short period of time, the loss would be reduced by about 1 or 2 out of 24. At least, that's according to my understanding of how they're putting their profits for the iphone on their books. The laptops and desktops and ipods on the other hand, are a different story.
