The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

I step away from my computer for a full day and look what I miss. A damn tethering program for my laptop. Guess I'm gonna have to jailbreak my phone to make this work. I'll keep my eyes peeled, but I doubt another tethering option comes along.
How exactly does one jailbreak it, and what are the benefits?

You use software available on the internet to jailbreak your phone, which allows you to install 3rd party apps not approved by Apple, or other apps approved by apple but circumventing itunes store. I'm not sure there's a general release for jailbreaking 2.0, but I'm on the lookout.

So I was fiddling around a bit, and I'm putting on this plastic protector thingy on the face of my new iPhone. And, remembering what the guy in the store told me, about using a flat edge to make sure there are no bubbles left, I take out a credit card and try to force a few air pockets out and stuff.Well, it didn't turn out right, I end up ripping the plastic thing off in disgust and what's left is a damaged screen, with scratches and blemishes on it. I must have been pressing way too hard. ####!So do I take it back? I did buy one of those extended AppleCare plans, maybe that will cover it. ### ####it.
So are they gonna let me return it or not?

I would suggest that if you ever might have an interest in using your iPhone as a mobile or emergency internet connection for your laptop, you may want to consider buying this app while it is still available. It's entirely possible it could disappear again. :

Or, follow the story as it breaks here in the comments sections of the NetShare stories on the front page.
can AT&T detect if you are tethering a laptop?
No. I tether with my blackjack 2 all the time with just the $30/mo unlimited data plan. Had to do a small hack to enable it, but after that it was gold.

Still have my original Iphone - 2 issues ive been having

1. Apps are not working - DL and pd for Texas Holdem and updated to recent upgrade and still does not work - hit the icon and nothing. Radio apps are really slow and skip - is that Edge? Any suggestions?

2. Phone is only 5 months old but battery level is already bad - I have manual emial retrieve and push turned off - still goes down quick. Does it hurt the battery to have it connected and plugged into charged speaker system all day? Do I need a new battery already? Whats that process entail? Trying to hold out for the next upgrade...

thanks

This may go back to my question, which was never answered: can the iphone be docked with an in-car or home stereo ipod docking system? If not, that may be a total dealbreaker for me.

There is a universal adaptor you can use that I think will let you connect it to anything with the universal port. Not 100% certain, but I think you could use the adaptor to use with other things like an fm tuner. I am lucky to have an aux. jack in my car so connecting the iphone to the stereo is a non-issue. Here is the link to the adaptor. HTH.

It can be docked, but currently, it won't charge. Old iphone solutions in cars would charge iphone 1 and play over radio.Same attachments will still play over radio, but no longer charge. So to have both charging and audio-playback, a new solution is necessary, but just to play, old ones work. At least all old ones i've tried.

Hi Kiddnets,1. Delete it, then re-download it. (you won't be charged again)2. Make sure your brightness is down at least under the half mark. Also, I like to turn off my 3G when I'm not using it.I get a day and a half out of every full charge if I'm not using apps much.

Also be aware that once you start playing Holdem it sucks up a lot of battery power. Worth it though.

Cool, thanks for the info.At least it plays, but lack of charging is teh suck. :thumbdown:Just to summarize, if I buy a new iphone, will I need to buy something separate if I want it to dock with home and/or car stereo?I am thinking the docking, even without charging, is enough to put me over the top here and get one. I guess you are just screwed on long trips, though. :(

i've noticed the thing being laggy a little. i'll go clear everything out of the cache, etc. and when in doot, reboot.

i thought this was interesting. not sure wtf point of it is, though.

Report: iPhone Nano to ring in the holidays

Posted by Steven Musil 7 comments

You can expect an iPhone Nano to be on the shelves in time for the holiday shopping season, according to a report on the U.K.'s Daily Mail Web site Sunday.

The report, which cited "an industry source," said the product would launch in the U.K. by mobile phone operator O2 for the pay-as-you-go market, but offered no clue when or if it would be launched in the United States.

The report seems to indicate the iPhone Nano would be a dumb-down version of the current iPhone 3G.

"The iPhone 3G has been the fastest-selling phone ever in the U.K., but it is too expensive to be a realistic proposition in the pay-as-you-go market," the source told the newspaper. "However, a cut down version, with the candy bar shape of iPod Nano music players, would be a huge hit as a Christmas gift."

The newspaper suggests that the new iPhone Nano could have a touch wheel interface on one side and a screen on the other, meaning that calls would be dialed from behind and lack full Internet browsing functionality.

If this all sounds a bit familiar, it's because this rumor was floating around last year. Considering the wild success of the iPhone and Apple's plans for a family of iPhones, a move like this certainly makes sense. Whether Apple is ready to do it soon seems to be a bigger question.

One of the more-recent rumors has the iPod Nano getting a slimmed-down makeover. iLounge reports that Apple plans to bring back the thinner iPod Nano design of years past but in a taller package that's a nod to the screen size of today's "fat" iPod Nano.

Apple has held a September iPod event the last several years, and we're pretty sure they'll have another one on tap this year, with a revamped iPod Touch likely to accompany a new iPod Nano. In support of that suspicion, AppleInsider is reporting that resellers have been told to expect shortages of iPods and Macbooks in the coming weeks

2. Apple will allegedly announce a problem with its batteries, one that is so serious that the company is considering a massive product recall. Additionally, it is rumored that AT&T (T - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) will be awarded another year to be the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.S. and that Apple will be refreshing its notebook line in time for the back-to-school season.

So I just went in to see what was up. It was interesting, what happened. The iPhone actually comes with a protective cover already on it. And I'm not talking about the one that fits loosely over the whole phone. There is a very strong adhesive cover that is almost impossible to detect, but it's there. So that is what I "damaged", which was great news for me. They weren't scratches, but marks on the protector. The chick pulled it off (wasn't easy) and everything's fine now. Actually, the screen looks better/brighter and more clear without it. Also, it appears it's easier to clean/wipe off prints -- a nice plus. Problem is, most will probably want some protection if they are harder on their phones. Fine. But I'm thinking I'm gonna go without it. Does anybody know how easy/difficult it is to scratch/mark up the unprotected screen? How durable is it?

Lastly, and I thought this was very interesting. The fact the people at AT & T really push the $10 screen protectors, which end up totally unnecessary, really got me. They don't tell you that you are adding ANOTHER protector?! Those things cost nothing to make. You get 3 of them. Perfect price point. Who isn't gonna add in another 10 bucks on their bill to "protect" their investment? Meanwhile, all you are doing is putting another protector over the top of the one it comes with. Total BS. I wonder if Apple stores are running the same kind of racket...

What's more, is when adding the protector, it's very difficult to do it without blemishes. So you go through them quickly. Obviously, I messed up my first one. And my buddy went through all three of his, with no success (which was actually pretty funny)...

Just got mine. New AT and T cust. So my questions are mostly with service. Ive noticed my bars bouncing all over the place..outside it would go from like full bars to one. Common AT&T thing? Also I had my number port forwarded. How long till I can recieve incoming calls, i can make outgoing ones, but I still come up as a Verizon wireless user on caller IDs? Do I have to call Verizon for anything?

They (AT&T) told me it would take around 3 hrs before the completion of the port. It ended up being around 5-6hrs. It wasn't a biggie to me. As for the Verizon thing, you don't have to do anything. I got a letter shortly after from Verizon, telling me that they were notified of my decision to switch carriers. They also made sure to tell me that I was leaving the "most reliable network, blah, blah, blah..." My final bill will be sent to my address.I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with AT&T's coverage here in the Cincy area. I've not had any problems in terms of dropped calls, or bad coverage. As for the phone, it's one of the best purchases I've made. Definitely worth the wait.

What's the best board for iPhone fixes, questions, etc?

iLounge.com seems to be pretty good for anything iApple...which is why I'm there right now. I'm getting an error when I try to download the recent update.

EDIT: Tried the download again, and it worked this time. :P

Might wanna blame the record companies, not Apple.
Do You Have A License for that Ringtone?

In addition to carefully watching every performance in order to catch any playback of any bit of music that was not paid for with the appropriate license, music industry also monitors Apple to make sure it does not confer any suggestion that users might use the labels’ music in ways that might leave money on the table. When they saw that Apple might allow users to put songs on phones, they flipped a nut and sent in lawyers to iron out a contract covering iPhone ringtones.

Apple negotiated a far lower price than any other ringtone distributor, but the labels are worried that consumers might figure out how to create their own ringtones, just as they were able to figure out how to put music from CDs onto computers and MP3 players, a practice that got out of hand and resulted in more music being handed around for free than legally paid for.

Nek added, “The iPhone is a hardware product which Apple derives substantial profits from, ringtones are something people want but the current state of copyright law in the states makes much more unfair than it should be.”

Many ways to create free ringtones, easiest one is if you have a mac. Use garageband. Plenty of websites detail that process.

Yep -- it's a monster file (250MB) so when it's first released, the download site can get swamped. It usually clears up within a few hours.

You need to Jailbreak your iPhone to install free ringtones? LMAO. That coupled with the rumors about the defective battery and no tethering...wow Apple got themselves a bunch of suckers to buy into the hype.

Got a question. The voice plan for the iPhone includes unlimited roaming on AT&T's partner carriers or whatever. Is this even possible on the iPhone? Can I set it so it roams onto other carriers or can I just get AT&T service. I ask because there are a few spots I driver through frequently that have no AT&T service.

Putting on these static cling screen protectors is a pain in the ### without getting dust particles stuck to it. Any better options or is this the most widely used one?

For those of you who may not know -- there has been a huge stir going on in the last 24 hours about NetShare, an App Store app released by NullRiver which effectively allows you to "tether" your unjailbroken iPhone to your computer, allowing it to use your iPhone's connection to the internet. The app appeared on the iTunes app store last night but was available for only about 20 minutes before being pulled offline by Apple for reasons that are still not entirely clear.
Still unavailable? Any workaround?

From Nullriver's website:

August 4th, 2008NetShare status report 2 We've finally gotten in contact with Apple. Looks like the lack of communication was due to automated e-mail systems being employed on both ends, which resulted in e-mails being lost in transit. We're working with Apple to get NetShare back up on the AppStore.

nah I didn't want to buy an iPhone, I have a BB and suits me fine without APPL's limitations of tethering or replaceable battery. If I want to listen to music I use my iPod.

HELLO, why can't I get a pix message? It's like I don't have enough apple/tech cred to get acknowledged in here. Sheesh! ;)
The iphone does not allow pics to be sent in text messages. This is not new, it has been since inception. Just have super hot asian send the same pic from her phone to your email instead. Apple thinks that is the way things will be going in the future

Well I'll be damned. That sucks.Thanks.

What the heck is tethering?
Tethering is using your phone as a wireless modem with your laptop. Tethering allows you to leverage the wireless data connection on your phone to surf the web on your laptop. With most smartphones (iPhone excluded) you can tether with your laptop via USB or Bluetooth.

For those of you who may not know -- there has been a huge stir going on in the last 24 hours about NetShare, an App Store app released by NullRiver which effectively allows you to "tether" your unjailbroken iPhone to your computer, allowing it to use your iPhone's connection to the internet. No movement yet, it's still unavailable in any country. It's good to hear that they're in contact with Apple to get things cleared up but no one seems to be letting on what the real issue is or how long it might take to clear up.If NetShare does come back online, look for a flood of these type of applications to be released. There are plenty of open source proxy servers out there and porting them to the iPhone would not be terribly difficult for an experienced developer.

Get ready to laugh but...why the f can't I open a pix message from this pretty hot asian chick I want to bang? It sends me to some website that sucks...that sucks!
Yeah, I haven't been able to get picture messages either. It says to go to a site, and I tried it once to no avail. Haven't bothered trying again, so who knows.
You need to pay APPL to unlock that technology for you. :lmao:

Be patient. I think MMS (picture messaging) is a feature that is coming in a software update but just hasn't been implemented yet - like copy/paste. Lots of rumors surrounding it.Link

And as mentioned before, there is a work-around. You can email pics to user phonenumber@provider and they'll receive it through their text app. Here's more info:
