The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

I messed around with my niece's Samsung Instinct the other day and decided I'm going to go to a touchscreen phone next. It's just too cool. So, my notion of getting a Curve is gone. THen I reviewed the Instinct and the iPhone and it appears the iPhone browser is significantly better of an experience. Toss in the app store and I'm sold. I wish the 3G version had the original form factor (so it would lay flat on a table) and had the silver back instead of black(which I will likely choose). Otherwise...can't wait to get one.
Nice Abe, I love my white iP3G, but I'm with you on the Silver/Black part. I loved the look and feel. Also... I haven't noticed anything weird with it not being flat. The new iP3G doesn't rock when you set it down or anything.

Yeah, my girl has an instinct. She likes it. Browsing on iphone is the best on any mobile phone, and it's not even close. The instinct isn't too bad though.

Found this link today while scanning the tech news sites. Four sites seemingly unaffiliated with Apple that provide reviews and, in some cases, usage stats for iPhone apps.

4 Great iPhone App Review Sites

Written by Corvida / August 16, 2008 11:45 AM

The iTunes App Store is a bit of a big deal these days. Several new applications pop up in the iTunes store every day. With hundreds of apps to download from it can be time consuming to sort through them all. Unfortunately, there is no try before you buy option for any of the iTunes apps. So, if you happen to see one that looks interesting, but requires you to shell out your hard earned cash, app reviews really come in handy. While the iTunes App Store features reviews from others, sometimes you just want a second opinion. Today, ReadWriteWeb brings you 4 iPhone/iPod app review sites.

What's On iPhone?

What'soniphone is not only a great iTunes apps review site, but also a great web apps review site. With a team of engineers, writers, medical professionals, culinary artists, home makers, What's on iPhone will help anyone decide on an app. Reviews start off with an overview of the application and follows up with their personal take on the app, a mini review, and the final verdict.

iUseThis

If you not only want reviews of an app, but also want to know how many people are really using it, iUseThis is your site. You can register for iUseThis to keep a log of all the apps you're using. However, the site is best for finding out the most popular of two apps. For example, if you're trying to make a decision between two or three note-taking applications and wanted to know which one may have been downloaded the most, iUseThis is a great place to find out.

AppVee

AppVee is a recently launched application review site. AppVee aims to do things a little differently by providing users with a personal review of the app and also ratings for the apps. Ratings range from ease of use and features to the app's user interface. I've already spotted quite a few app reviews that I haven't seen elsewhere on AppVee.

Apple iPhone School

Apple iPhone School is a great app review site for both the App Store apps and jailbroken apps via Cydia. There's a great selection of app reviews currently available for both sources. If you're looking for a particular app review check out the site's sidebar for categories and more.

More Than Enough

Now you'll never have to complain about needed more reviews for an app. With over 4 sources including the iTunes App Store itself, you're all set to make a safe decision on whether or not to buy a particular app. Did we miss any sites? Let us know what your favorite iTunes App review sites are!

I get a little pause in between when I hit a menu/app thingy, and when it actually comes up. I remember somebody mentioning that on here. Is there a fix?

Also, I can't get access to the web (although it appears I did at one time because there are 130 emails or so). Any reason it "stopped"? And how do I fix that? I'm sure it's easy but I am still going to have to call Apple. :bag:

Really like the phone, btw.

Oh, and I have the Jawbone wireless ear phone. It just doesn't fit right. Any suggestions? And as with my nano, the white headphones also fall out. Can't find the right pair and I've been through like 4 now...

Thanks.

Siriusly?

By dimitri - Posted on 15 August 2008

Five years ago, I was looking for something that would let me play continuous music in my office without interruptions and with a fast beat.

After spending some money on CD's (I know, I know, CD's? Why not iPod, I have my reasons), I quickly found that it was a pain to keep rotation of new material in the player. So I decided that I would swallow hard and spend the $150 for a Sirius Radio. At $12 / month, it was cheaper than my music buying habits, and i didn't have to worry about managing a large CD collection (or even itunes collection) of music to fit my need.

I have NEVER looked back, and hardly ever (if at all) listen to regular radio anymore.

You see, I bought Sirius way before Howard decided to join, I bought it for the music, and there is NO comparison to the sound quality, selection, and commercial free stations its offers. No comparison of course until now. It seems that even though AOL Radio, Pandora (which I have been using for a number of years on my Mac and love it as much as Sirius), and a few others (soon, I'm sure), offer an alternative to Sirius, I am really used to their programming, stations, and quality of music selections. My kids love KidStuff radio, I love Fox News, the 80's station, 90's station, Heavy Metal and Alternative selections, and of course Howard.

So why am I bringing all this up? Simple. Sirius is coming to iPhone! It seems that GeeksToolbox is creating a version of their StarPlayr for the iPhone, and I simply cant wait to try it out. Imagine, portable Sirius radio? And no need for that silly antenna anymore? It can't happen soon enough. So be on the lookout for my reviews the moment its available. Guess I'm going to have to set up that stereo now with a connection to my iPhone.

The pause seems to be better using the 2.0.1 firmware than it was under 2.0 but it's still worse sometimes than others. Not sure if there is a real fix out there but I know my iPhone seems to perform better after I restart it, so I do that if it gets annoyingly slow launch times. I would definitely call Apple about not being able to access the web. If you can browse the web using Safari but don't receive/can't send email, then that may be a problem with your email provider or the email settings rather than a general connectivity problem.

Fitting the Jawbone is an exercise, for sure. The package should have come with (I think) three different earpieces and three different over-ear hooks. You pretty much have to try each one of those to find the best combination. Mine fits pretty well now but it took a couple of days to decide on the best combination. Those white earbuds that came with the phone won't stay in my ears at all, either. After doing some research and deciding between closed-ear and open-ear headphones, I bought these Etymotic hf2 and they are great.

I do not recommend buying an iPhone until they fix this problem. It is very annoying, and they need to get it fixed asap. The phone is flawed, and text messaging is a feature that phones at a fraction of the price have no problems with.
Yeah, it's starting to piss me off a bit. Other apps are hanging as well, from time to time. The first gen iPhone gave me no problems and was very very smooth in all functions. This 3G has quite a few more bugs to work out before it nears the stability and functionality of the first iphone.

Thanks Memphis. Can I run with those headphones, you think? Or will they fall out? And it there any other wireless ones worth checking out?Seeing that youtube link just now about the lag time, mine is not nearly as bad.

Oh yeah, they would absolutely work for running. The flanged earpieces set up a vaccum in your ear canal that helps them stay put and the little clip at the "Y" allows you to clip them to your shirt so that they don't drag themselves loose. I wear them while walking/jogging in the park and even though it has been extremely hot, sweaty weather over the last month or so, they have been solid.

It's the 2.1, because my 1st gen phone was working fine until I updated it. I'm sure the next patch should be more targeted at these specific problems, as they are well documented on the apple forums. But, that's what I thought about the last patch.

Purely a guess but it *feels* like there are still some significant resource leaks in the firmware, probably as a result of the API/apps being unable to recover memory properly. This is not unusual with new APIs and it should get better with each firmware release.

I'm thinking of getting an iphone. A big question is to get the 8GB or16GB. I'd like to hear from some owners about there experience and benefits / drawbacks to the different size models.

Is the larger storage mainly used for music?

Do your Apps take up much of the storage space?

What other things are using the storage?

I don't think I will use the iPod aspect a lot and I wont take a lot of pictures. So I'm just trying to find out if there is another reason I may need the 16GB model.

Thanks for the input.

2.0.2, I just got it. Will report back in a few days regarding its performance.

anyone run into this

my phone has no space any more - 14 gigs of "other" no idea what other is though! Just have a few apps and email - What gives!

A while back I posted on what I thought were airbubbles near the earpiece. Turns out they're sensors, every phone has them...three dots, one a light sensor, one is to detect when the phone is near your ear to shut the LCD off I dont know what he third one is. Just an FYI for anyone who may be wondering what those three dots are.

With the AOL Radio App I'm thinking of canceling Sirius. Sure I lose Howard but the genre'd stations seem pretty great.

This lag is starting to get bad, I'm hoping the newest update will fix it. Amazing how this never happened once on the old 1st gen iphone.

Anybody downloaded the 2.0.2 update yet? Noticed any changes? I haven't had a chance to download it yet.
If this was the one that came out a few weeks ago, then yes. And, I haven't noticed any changes.

There's an update that came out this week. Adonis and One referenced it in posts 1575 and 1576. The update you're talking about was 2.0.1, and I also didn't notice any differences after installed that update.ETA: I actually did notice one difference with the 2.0.1 update - my iPhone backed up MUCH slower than it did before the update. Took 3-4 times longer.

I think it came out only 2 days ago. I downloaded last night. There are mixed results on mac rumor forums. I had very good results thought. Lag on contacts still there, but better.3 G speeds seem significantly better ( in my basement office, went from 400kbs to 900kbs)..outdoors I get better 3G

Post latest update, my iphone is working better. Still haven't done much on it, but the battery life doesn't fade so fast. It's too short of a time to really tell any significant differences though.

Thanks for the updates fellas. I'll have to download it and install tonight. Is it a 250 mb download like the last one??

Anyone else using the SimplifyMedia app? This thing rocks.
I downloaded it, but haven't used it yet. It lets you stream from your home itunes and other friends itunes onto the iphone, right?
Yep. Plus it gives a little blurb about the artist and goes to LyricWiki to get the lyrics. :goodposting:And you don't have to use iTunes. I put it on my PC (wife's laptop is our iTunes center) and use Winamp.

What are some of the better (the best?) iPhone forums out there? I am still contemplating getting one but wanted to whip through a few bulletin boards to answer some questions that I don't even know that I should be asking right now...

The more applications I download for my iPhone, the more I think it could benefit from a couple of user interface tweaks. I would love to see the following:

1.) The ability to make the permanent "app dock" at the bottom multiple lines thick.

2.) The ability to leave spaces between app icons on a page rather than forcing the icons to auto-arrange from top left to bottom right. That way I could use a single page for a couple of small "groups" of applications instead of splitting them off onto separate pages.

3.) Updating an app should not change the location of the icon.

My texting still sticks. Becoming more and more disappointed with this version of the iPhone. Again, it's still better than most other options, but with the first gen software, I didn't have to deal with these bugs.

2.1 can't come soon enough. Still random crashes, still sluggish texting.

I haven't had any issues with texting. Running 2.02.

:D , i just restarted my phone and it's much better. Issue is definitely still there.

Here is a quick fix for the keyboard lag,

Ever since Apple released the much anticipated iPhone 2.0 firmware, we’ve all been suffering the intermitent slow SMS issues. To my knowledge nobody has managed to replicate the issue, find a cause or indeed fix it. I usually resort to rebooting my iPhone but it’s incredibly inconvenient.

Apple have released 3 new firmware updates to fix “bugs”. Unfortunately Apple don’t give a list of fixes and more unfortunate, none of the releases have address the SMS slow down bug.

A couple of days ago I’d been browsing the App store, upon closing the icon looked dimmed. I’d not noticed it before. I then received an SMS and proceeded to reply, when the bug reared it’s ugly head and once again it took me over a minute to send a simple SMS.

After I’d hit send, I quickly remembered back to the dimmed App store icon and my curiosity was roused. I tested the SMS again and sure enough it was still lagging. I closed it up and proceeded to my home screen to open the App store up. Once it had loaded, I closed the App store again at which point the App store icon returned to normal state.

I had a gut feeling my SMS was now going to send lag free and sure enough, it sent fine. I proceeded to send several more and sure enough all was ok. Every time the SMS lag has shown up, the App store icon has been dimmed, a quick open/close of the app store fixes the issue.

So far, I’ve not experienced the issue with any other App, other than the App store.

While it’s not a permanent fix, it’s sure faster than rebooting the iPhone. Plus it gives us more of an idea of what’s going on. Apple I assume are aware of this and chose not to disclose.

Update: According to a MacRumors user, this issue isn’t unique to the App store. It can effect any of the iPhones original apps such as Safari, Mail, Maps etc. So be sure to check these out during SMS lag.

I also read that starting a new note will help. I haven't tried either yet, so don't hold these fixes against me if they don't work.

Either way it is a serious problem, and it's annoying as crap to have to reset the thing 2-3 times a day.

For anyone who doesn't know, holding down the home button for 8-10 seconds will force quit whatever app you have open. It can be helpful for a variety of situations, but particularly those "Message has not been downloaded" bugs in the Mail app.

Well I dropped it already after a month, had it in a rubber ballistic case and it looks like the LCD underneath is cracked. The screen is completely dead, it's all white and the phone isn't working. What do the Apple store guys usually do about this. Do I have to buy a whole new one.

How can I load movies onto the iPhone? I used DVDFAB to save it as an MP4 and can access it in iTunes but when I try to sync, it doesn't send it to the phone.

And Sundays Rule, I think you're screwed unless you got some kind of insurance on it. Yes/No?

I don't think they have insurance on iPhones.

Take it into an Apple Store, couldn't hurt.My GB dropped his last gen, cracking the screen and they replaced it.

Select the movie in iTunes. Then under ADVANCED select Convert Selection For iPod/iPhone. It creates a duplicate of the video which you can then drag onto your iPhone in the sidebar.ETA: The video will be on your iPhone under iPod/Videos.

I tried that but it comes up with the error saying "One of more videos were not converted because they are already in the correct format"
