The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

I have to admit, after being stuck with a ####ty Motorola Q for a while (I had 3 of them because they kept crapping out) and a Samsung Alias for a year (not a bad phone, but email is pretty brutal on it and no real internet) I am pretty excited for my iPhone 3G s next week!

I need to learn all about apps . . . .

eBay'd the old one for $450.I stated the phone won't ship until the 19th, but I hope he knew enough english to understand that part.
I'm thinking about doing this myself, but I'm a bit worried about scammers. What did you charge for shipping?
I've never had a problem with scammers, just use PayPal and don't ship until you get the payment in full.As for shipping, I measure & weigh the box and use the shipping wizard. International shipping usually comes to around $15 for 6-10 days, $50-$85 for 2-3 days.

And here I was thinking that early adopters should get a price break. Instead we have to pay $200 more. #### that.

AT&T sucks
Technically, the early adopters make out well. The 2 year-contracts for all those that bought the iPhone when it first came out in '07 are expiring right about now, so they're golden. It's the later adopters that aren't making out and have to pay the price if they want to upgrade right away.

I might get the 3GS next week since I'm still on my 1G iphone. The only thing that sucks is that you can't do MMS or tethering on the AT&T network. Why advertsie something that American users won't be able to do.

any ideas?

What's the deal with Apple in-store pick-up? I got an e-mail saying to proceed to the store on the 19th to complete my purchase, but int he fine print it says it's first come first served. So what was the point of pre-ordering on-line?

I assume those who pre-ordered online would have first crack at it. If there is just one long line for those that pre-ordered and those that just showed up I'd agree.

how early are people showing up to pickup their phone? The store I reserved mine at is usually open 24h but they are closing at midnight the night before and are opening up at 8AM on that Friday (19th). Was thinking of swinging by at like 6AM and hope the line was not too long.

right,, once I saw the meaningless in-store pick up fine print... I ordered and paid online... now I can buy accessories, some where else, and not get caught up in the iHype of the instore environment..I love visiting the apple retail store... very cool... but very expensive

My UPS tracking actually has my scheduled delivery as TOMORROW. Will I be able to activate it before the official release date? What accessories are necessary and should I avoid the Apple store (where else do you buy them?)

iphone accessories are everywhere.. Best Buy, Target retail... Amazon, online... there are literally dozens of cases ...I ordered an invisible shield.. cheaper from the company zagg.com.. but they take forever to fill an order.. I will most likely also order a incase "slider" case for it as well.. ilounge.com has good info... on all accessories...

I ordered mine in store at AT&T.

They said between 7-9 AM there will be a white 32gb iPhone 3G S⃣ with my name on it and I'd have 7 days to pick it up.

I would say yes

Ordered mine (16GB Black) last night at the AT&T store - they said they stopped guaranteeing Friday availability last Friday, so mine will come in within "7-14 days" or I can show up & wait in line with anyone else on Friday at 7am and hope to get lucky.

Since they are allowing pre-orders this time around, do folks think there will be much in the way of lines on Friday? I figure a good number of people who wanted to be early adopters took advantage of the pre-order option (which I don't believe was available with previous releases).

honestly, I don't know how many there will be.. I bought the first gen.. as the store was closing on opening day.. there were still units available.. but the sheer hype and presumed volume of people, I wasn't going to wait in line.. I walked up and grabbed 2..last year, they sold a million in three days.. ( i think globally however) and I just figure, everyone who already has one, from year 1 and year 2, at least that many will be out to get one or upgrade, for year 3.... so online shipped home, versus wading through that mess. seems like a much better option..

just place my order, free from sprint... once use AT&T will have used them all...

the email I got back upon order was 5-7 days and this is from a corporate discount program.

6am is probably a good time. I wont be getting the 3G S as i'm not eligible for an upgrade yet with my 3G, but the line was pretty crazy at like 7AM when i went to pick it up last year. Like you, I picked it up in the city but at the 14th. St. store so i'm guessing the lines will be around the same.Does anyone know if the 3.0 update goes live at the stroke of midnight? Or is it one of those wait till 3am things?

I was wondering this myself, as a west coaster I would love to get this at 9pm.

I shipped my 3G off today.

While I was in line at USPS with 8 old grumpy people, the song 'Birthday Sex' came on over the USPS radio speakers.

I just about fell over laughing after watching the old folk's jaws drop.

I reserved one at the Apple Store on Friday. Did they give out more reservations than phones? There's no way in hell I will wait in line for this.

I got the following from Apple when I reserved one a week ago:
Thanks for reserving your iPhone. You can come to the store you selected anytime on the day of your reservation. When you arrive, talk to a Concierge in an orange shirt. We'll help you complete your purchase, set up your phone, and get off to a great start.
Why would anyone wait in line who has the above guarantee?

Well...let's say you go 15 minutes before work and there is a 30 minute wait...Or...you go at lunch time and there is over an hour wait...Or...you go after work and the line is around the block...

I hope they're able to handle it better than this.

Questions:

- Are these phones worth getting for somebody who doesn't even know what 3G stands for? (Let alone the stupid 'S' at the end of it now)...

- Someone who has no idea what "MMS" or "tethering" are (I saw those mentioned towards the top of the page, no clue)...

- Someone who rarely uses his phone for anything more than text messaging and calling the wife...

I don't know, I mean I was thinking about getting one but then I came in here and started remembering that these things are way over my head and they look like a lot of work.

Waiting in lines just to buy it? Seriously? And then how long is it going to take me to figure out how to use the thing?? I imagine I'm going to need to spend a solid week cramming and studying. It all just seems a very confusing and not worth the trouble/effort... I guess I understand the convenience of having the internet in your pocket 24/7, and that the apps are really cool and fun - and some even look pretty handy --- but I have yet to see anything from any of the commercials that has made me sit up and say, "i HAVE to have that!"

Thoughts from current owners? Is your iPhone worth all the trouble/energy/time/money/etc? After the honeymoon period wore off, were you still using it as much as the first few weeks after you got it? I imagine it'd be like the Wii that I bought - fun as heck for a few months and then eventually I ended up only playing it once in a blue moon.

iPhone > youseriously it is a gadget, if you are not a gadget geek then you can skip it. If you like having the latest and greatest (and aren't already locked into a contract with AT&T) then this is the phone for you.

Dont stand in line. Go the next day or the day after. Apple is not stupid, there will be more then enough to fill the needs.I love mine and I am gen 1 iphone. The apps make this phone the best. Not sure if I will upgrade right now or not but I am thinking about it

But it's not a guarantee. If you look at the fine print at the bottom of the e-mail it says, "Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis."

frank you posted from a computer while I unload last nights dinner and post from my iphone. On the down side, I haven't gotten downstairs yet to download the update

quick question:

i need to change the credit card attached to my itunes account. the only thing is i registered/set up itunes on my phone on a buddies computer. is there anyway to go online and access my itunes account from a different computer?

That phrase is to cover their ###. Barring extreme circumstances, I have to believe they will put a phone aside for everyone who reserved one. They'd be stupid not to. Otherwise, you've got a great remake of the Seinfeld reservation episode.

I agree... I think apple customer service and relations is of a rather high caliber... my guess is any reservations not picked up today, might be available for sale or person who reserved it, tomorrow.. guessing its upto the store manager.going to the local apple store today to look at accessories.. so as to have them before the boxes show up at my door friday

You just have to go to "The Apple Store" website and enter your Apple ID & password. You can do it from any computer.

Yeah, hmm - for some reason the "you can putz around on the internet while on the toilet taking a dump" argument isn't exactly swaying me...

You certainly don't need to run out and get 1 the day it comes out. If you think you would use some of the different features I think it is well worth the money.- Phone aspect - Nothing really better than your average phone. The visual voice mail is a nice feature. Allows you to see a list of your messages and just click on the ones you want to hear, replay only a certain part of the message and delete specific messages with a tap.- Texting - Allows you to follow your whole conversation on the screen. Full keyboard is much easier to use then a regualr phone as well.- Map - This is the feature I use most frequently. With the iphone you have a map in your pocket all the time. GPS pinpoints where you are. You can search for business near you (Great for finding a restaurant, store, or gas station when in unfamiliar territory). Get directions to anywhere. Find out traffic info.- Internet in your pocket - very easy to use and you get full Internet availability (except for Flash) instead of just mobile sites. Great for looking up anything on the go. Good speed too and the new iphone is faster (the "S" in 3Gs)- email - I am a heavy email user so it is great to be able to check it anywhere. Respond faster, clear out emails you don't need to keep and contact people. That is the end of the real beneficial aspects for me. Everything else is gravy. - Tons of free games which are great for passing time while you are waiting in line or have some time to kill. - Make notes for your self or record notes to your self. - Tons of music and radio apps so you can listen to shows from all over the country or your own personal station on Pandora. - Ipod to keep your music with you.- Calendar (I sync mine with a google calendar with my entire schedule.- Weather forecasts- a CameraThere are a bunch of other apps that may fit your needs too.So I think it is very worth it. It is easily the most valuable piece of electronics I own and would have a real hard time without it after having it for a year.

My dad and grandmother have iPhones.Neither has a computer, you can't get them off their phones. The beauty of the iPhone is in it's simplicity. The range of apps makes it so anybody can find something they're interested in.
