The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

I agree... I think apple customer service and relations is of a rather high caliber... my guess is any reservations not picked up today, might be available for sale or person who reserved it, tomorrow.. guessing its upto the store manager.going to the local apple store today to look at accessories.. so as to have them before the boxes show up at my door friday
Are they coming out today? I thought Friday, the 19th?

First backup after upgrade took forever...or more accurately 8-10 minutes.

Couple of my apps had upgrades so I knocked those out.

Copy/Paste works well, landscape keyboard too. Voice recorder seems nifty enough. SMS text alerts can also go in landscape mode which is cool.

do you use the email app? I do not.. wondering if I can copy in Safari, and paste into an email being composed in Gmail, on safari... I am guessing text can.. but images prolly not

The search feature is GREAT. Lordy, that might be the best new feature. Just searched for a keyword located in one of my emails and it found the right email, and i clicked on the search result, and it loaded mail and took me right to the email itself. Nice.

Yes, you can. I copied from Notes and pasted into Text Message. And I just copied the URL from a website from Safari and pasted it in a new email. So yeah, that works very well.

I've read that functionality regarding copying and pasting from safari, to say, Facebook app, will depend on facebook updating their app to support the copy/paste API from apple, which should come soon. There should be a batch of new apps coming out where they're updated to the 3.0 version.

What's better is that the search results are sorted by type, such as Contact, email, note, and it'll even search songs/podcasts and return the name too. Very nice, and fast.

that's great.. I am not a fan of the iphone email app, as i get so many emails, it's always receiving data, and running down the battery.. using the browser to manage gmail, is much better on power management.. I am sure google will be toout suite implementing that API, onto the mobile gmail browser page, unless they want to force more android adoption

quick question:i need to change the credit card attached to my itunes account. the only thing is i registered/set up itunes on my phone on a buddies computer. is there anyway to go online and access my itunes account from a different computer?
You just have to go to "The Apple Store" website and enter your Apple ID & password. You can do it from any computer.
thank you kindly

I'm thinking about taking the iphone plunge. This will be a huge technological leap from my lolphone of the past 5+ years. It was free through work though, which was nice. I'm not looking forward to a monthly cellphone bill for the first time. Company discount of $25 on order and 22% off service helps a little.

What do I need to know? I'm sure it does more than I really need, but I've also been wanting an ipod for years and could definitely use both a GPS device and a small pocket-sized camera. Looks like the iphone could take care of all that.

Any recommended accessories?

New iPhone 3G(S) eligibility dates...

http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=1574

An Update for Our Customers

Some customers have had questions about our plans and policies for iPhone 3G S, and we'd like to provide you with answers. We'd also like to announce a change to the date when some iPhone customers are eligible for our best upgrade pricing to iPhone 3G S.

Pricing

Importantly, we want our customers to better understand our wireless device upgrade program. Like most U.S. carriers, we offer a variety of phones that we sell below our actual cost when customers agree to sign service agreements. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

All of that said, we've been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we're extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

If you're one of the many customers who will benefit from this change, please note that our upgrade eligibility tools will reflect this change on Thursday, June 18.

We invite you to come to our stores beginning Friday during normal store hours, although please be aware that customer demand may exceed supply in some of our stores. You may also preorder online on June 18 at www.att.com/iphone, and your iPhone 3G S will arrive in 7 – 14 days. Or you can purchase iPhone 3G S at Apple's retail and online stores, as well as at other popular retailers.

If you're one of the customers who benefits from this change, and you've already preordered from an AT&T store, we'll adjust the price of the device when you pick it up. If you benefit from the change and you pre-ordered from AT&T online, we'll send you an e-mail and issue you a credit.

If you pre-ordered an iPhone 3G S through Apple's online store, your upgrade eligibility will be reassessed based on AT&T's new upgrade policy for iPhone 3G owners. If you are eligible for the lower price, Apple will issue you a credit for the difference as applicable.

So, what if you still aren't eligible for our best upgrade pricing and you still want iPhone 3G S now? You do have options:

You may qualify for the iPhone 3G S early upgrade price of $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB).

You can pay full retail—and not have to sign a 2-year contract—at $599 (16GB) or $699 (32GB).

You can wait until you're eligible for our best upgrade pricing. We invite you to check your upgrade eligibility by visiting www.att.com/iphone, calling *NEW# (*639#) on your AT&T device (we'll send you a text with upgrade information), or visiting any of our over 2,200 stores.

If you want more details on our pricing and upgrade policy, check out our FAQs. And as always, you may visit one of our stores to talk with a representative.

In Summary

We've listened to our customers — and hope our response helps answer some of your questions and concerns.

We are incredibly proud to be the U.S. carrier for the new iPhone 3G S and will work around the clock to be ready on June 19 to serve customers who are interested in the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet.

Taking the plunge, too. Time to get rid of my RAZR from June '05.

:lmao: I'm doing this method. The woman is eligible for an upgrade in September so I'll just be using her account to get my phone, and handing my phone down to her. Great job by AT&T to at least meet the complainers in the iPhone community in the middle.

Any estimate on how much of the 16GB will be left for songs/videos after loading address book and installing some apps? I'm wondering if it might be worth the extra $100 to double the capacity.

It'd be hard to DL enough apps to fill up even 1 GB.They're all pretty small.

I am regretting, ordering the 32gb... i just have hit my 8gb set as it is.... i see no reason to keep a bunch of video permanently on the device..pretty much cause I am sure i will want to upgrade once eligible (hoping less than 18 months from now  )

Cool. Thanks. I have well over 32GB of music but don't need immediate access to all of it at all times. 16GB should work.

So I ordered mine on June 11th, I checked today and under the shipping section, it says that it will be delivered by June 19th...is this thing really going to be delivered then? Or is it going to be shipped then...

Tons. Address book and Apps is a tiny tiny part of the space. Still, spend the extra $100. With the capability to record video is fairly decent quality, you'll want the space.

I'm confused by the Data Plan. Does that not include text messages?
Correct, you have to add a text plan. What I'm still not clear on is the two data plan differences. Don't you get unlimited use with the $30 plan? Why is the $45 plan there for "business" use?

What's the deal with Apple in-store pick-up? I got an e-mail saying to proceed to the store on the 19th to complete my purchase, but int he fine print it says it's first come first served. So what was the point of pre-ordering on-line?
I assume those who pre-ordered online would have first crack at it. If there is just one long line for those that pre-ordered and those that just showed up I'd agree.
right,, once I saw the meaningless in-store pick up fine print... I ordered and paid online... now I can buy accessories, some where else, and not get caught up in the iHype of the instore environment..I love visiting the apple retail store... very cool... but very expensive
My UPS tracking actually has my scheduled delivery as TOMORROW. Will I be able to activate it before the official release date? What accessories are necessary and should I avoid the Apple store (where else do you buy them?)
Looks like Apple put a "hold" on the UPS so that I dont get it until Friday. UPS is delaying the shipping until the "requested date" so it made its way from China to Alaska, and now is waiting in Kentucky to be shipped here to Pittsburgh. hufffffffffffffff

I think it said the business plan is only for if you need Microsoft Outlook and access to your company's intranet.

Correct - Exchange integration requires the extra $15/month.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that 200 text messages a month probably isn't sufficient. :bag:
I might text once every three months. I wonder what would happen if I have no plan and receive them. Big charges?I also noticed that I have something like 4300 rollover minutes. :blackdot:

I'm going to pick up a 3Gs on Friday. Will they swap out my sim card or what? I have a first gen iPhone currently.
From what I understand, there are two options.. either way , they'll just give you a phone...at home, you can back up the existing old phone, and then when you connect your new phone, you can upload the old phone image to it. Activation on the new phone deactivates the old, phone, but leave it functional like an ipod touch... you can an then chose to wipe the old phone, and sell it or whatever...the other option, which i am choosing, is to activate the new phone, and leave it fresh, just name it "noneother's new 32g 3Gs" activating will deactivate the phone functionality from my old phone.. and then I will basically rebuild the parts from my old phone that i want on my new one..this solution will allow me to keep my old phone AS IS, i have a fear, probably unjustified, that if use the old phone back-up to update my new phone, that both phones will now have the same name, and itunes wont be able to differentiate when I want to synch either phone again...

How do you keep your existing number if you don't swap the sim cards?

the online / itunes software will move the number to the new unit... just like when I purchased the first phone 2 years ago... no hardware was moved, SIM or otherwise...
