The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

I drove by the Apple store at 750 am and the lineup was out the door, down the street and around the corner. What a ####### joke, and what a mistake not having it delivered.

 Got mine this mornin'. Camera works much better than previous version even if it's only a 1MP increase...the auto-focus and overall picture quality is good.

I got the 32GB version, and still have my 16gb 3G so I did some side-by-side comparisons between opening different things, taking pictures, loading pages, and the vast majority of the time, the 3GS was quite a bit snappier...nothing ridiculous, but very responsive.

The voice control is very nice. Didn't think I'd use it much, but after toying with a few settings, I'll definitely be using it.

A nice upgrade was also the default headphones in the package. Unlike the old clicker headphones, the new ones have a longer "click" section, with 3 segments - volume up, volume down, and a clickable middle. Can hold it down and give a voice command, or use it to control things like previous headphones (hang up, forward song, skip ahead, answer call, etc).

I planned to get to 5th avenue store by 6AM, drank too much after soccer last night  , got there at 8:30AM - was paying for new iPhone at 9:23AM. I asked the guy checking me out with his PDA register how many checkout boys they had and he said he heard 99. Dayum.:unsure:Now I need to learn how to use this gizmo.I bought the Mobile Me, mistake? I didn't buy the Apple Care, figured I had a year to worry about that.

forgot to add, I like how they looked my name up before they let me wait in line - keeps the riff-raff out.

Picked up 30 of the 32gb 3GS iPhones this morning.....all for sale on ebay now......24 left....my markup is only $50 plus shipping....suckers!!!

I'm having some issues with calls dropping when I'm called while I'm using another app on the phone. It's happened a few times already. Anyone else having this problem?

Another nice subtle addition in 3.0 is under Recent Calls. Instead of just showing the name of your recent calls, it will show you the name, and in tiny print under the name, it'll show you which phone they called from. mobile, home, office...etc. Nice touch as sometimes I will call someone back by clicking the name, after I get off work, only to have it call their work phone instead of their cell phone, because they called me from work. If I knew they had called from work, and it is after work, I'd have called them on their cell, but oh well...this avoids that issue.Previously, you had to click the arrow beside the call, and see which number was highlighted...but now it's much easier to see.
Good to know. That always annoyed me as well. I'll be upgrading to 3.0 over the weekend. I just switched over to an iPhone 3G from Sprint about 6 months ago (and love it so far!), so I won't be upgrading to a 3G S for 18 months or so until my existing contract expires.

No loss really. If I weren't giving mine away, it wouldn't have been worth it to upgrade early.

The video quality is pretty good. On the video I just took, about 1min 15 sec, file size was 33.5 mb, for about a 2 second per MB rate. Didn't really have sound, and I guess it varies depending on what you record, but I'm glad I opted for the 32GB phone if I'm going to be taking lots of videos.

Ballin!
Update: 6 left
How did you order 30 at one time?
Got lots of friends who happen to work at Apple stores around town.
oh bull####™They have to be activated before completing the transaction.

I don't know if you guys know or not, I updated my 3G the other day, and I noticed that it still didn't have MMS nor the internet tethering (the two things I really wanted), so I called apple and they said that was a problem with the 3GS as well and that AT&T needed to 'catch up' and update their software, and that those features won't be available until the end of summer. I was like WTF!?! So, basically apple went out and updated the iPhone before AT&T could update their own services. OMG, we should boycott apple.

this isnt news. Apple said this upfront.

Looks like 3.0 has been cracked by the iphone-dev team, but only for iphone 3G and the original iphone.

Those of us with 3GS 3.0 will have to wait a bit before we can unlock ours.
Can you give me the benefits of "jailbreaking" the iPhone?
Well, for those who are new to the iphone, I'll explain what options I know of.Jailbreak - Breaks free of Apple's sometimes tyrannical control over what apps can and can't be loaded on your phone. Under standard configuration, downloading an app through their server is the only way you can install a program on your iphone. If they don't approve an app, you can't get it.

By jailbreaking it, you release yourself from total control from apple to tell you what you can and can't install. If a dev out there comes up with a cool app and apple won't approve it, they can release it through Cydia and you can get it on your phone. (Also, in the less legit area, you can install a "MobileInstall" patch where you can install cracked games/apps that you download from the internet, thereby gaining the ability to pirate, basically, but this is NOT synonymous with jailbreaking...just a high correlation  ).

Unlocking - If you've heard of people using iphones on other networks, primarily T-Mobile here in the US because of the similarity in chip-types between their phones (GSM) and the iPhone, they have "unlocked" their iphones to be used on another carrier. Currently, iphones sold in the US are locked into the AT&T network, but unlocking them allows at least a little more freedom regarding which carrier you choose.

There's an iphone dev(elopment) team that generally releases applications for PC's and Mac's that will jailbreak or unlock your phone. Just today they released a new version of PwnageTool for the mac that will jailbreak the 1st generation and 3G iphones running software version 3.0. As of yet, the 3GS version of the phone isn't supported, with regards to being jailbroken, but that will likely change in the next day or two as they currently say they're working on it.

So, basically, if you want more freedom to install other apps, or if you want the ability to install cracked apps, jailbreaking might be an option for you. If you want to switch to T-Mobile, which would be ridiculous after signing a new 2 year contract, you can do that by unlocking the phone.

Jailbreaking doesn't sound remotely interesting to me.

Unlocking my old first gen iPhone, however, may with regard to its value on the secondary market. How easy is this?

i try to load my itunes to my phone and it is not letting me. In fact when I plug my iphone into my computer, itunes doesn't come up and there is nothing on the left of the itunes screen where it says iphone. Help. And yes I have looked at the directions.

look on youtube for easy instructions
Turns out it's a bit more complicated than that.Since I updated my firmware to 3.0, the only way to unlock is with QuickPwn for Windows, which hasn't been released yet. If I had a Mac I'd be in business with Pwnage Tool 3.0.

I know that MMS isnt supported yet by ATT, however, the iPhone instruction booklet still tells you how to send pic/vid messages by clicking the "camera button" while in message mode. I do not have this camera button though. (I realize if I did it wouldnt function) Do I need to download that 3.0 software or something? I assumed it was pre-loaded. Just a little confused even though its something that isnt currently relevant.

My phone has been backing up now for 45 minutes as I am trying to download 3.0. Anyone else wait that long. If I disconnect it, do I risk losing stuff?

I wish I was in So Cal. I am in NY. I have had the phone since Nov 07 and have only plugged it in and synched and backed it up 3 times (mostly when other updates were released). It finally finished but took forever.

Does anyone else hate how you cant put music on like a regular ipod and you have to make playlists.

Am I doing something wrong or is that the only way
