The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

you can google the problems regarding apple if you don't take my word for it.
Good lord, man. Any company that sells over 30 million iPhones/iPod Touches in three years like Apple has will have some isolated issues. That's a far cry from your attempt to paint them as a company with a reputation for shoddy products and poor customer service. :goodposting:

Use a good pair of dikes to cut the barbs off the hook before you pull it out.

I know. I'm too easy when it comes to the Apple stuff. :bag:

anyone having battery problems with the new 3G(s)? I turned the brightness way down, bluetooth off, push off and it still drains super quick.

example - left at 8am with 100% charge - listened to about 2 hrs of music, checked emails a few times, sent 5 txts and went on the 3G internet about 30 minutes total - phone died out of juice by 4pm. I really dont think that should drain the phone. Any other secrets that I missed - could I have a phone with a crappy battery? Exchange while its still under 2 months new?

thanks - driving me nuts!

Seriously, it's not like Apple after the year warranty is up helps you out in differently and in fact they tell you what you have no longer works and since it's not covered take it to third party or hey give it to us and we'll give you 10% off on a new purchase. Funny but how is something that no longer will run from an apple "genius" runs again? Seems like they take your product, go in the back and if out of warranty pulls a scam on you, get you to buy another one and convince you yours is done when it's not.

Yeah, the iphone, while a great mobile device still has very sucky battery life. And I thought the 3GS had a much better battery life, sounds like it's still crap. I would advise getting a car charger or one of those portable ones, or better yet both lol. I take my charger everywhere I go for this very reason.

I've been stunned by Apple's awesome customer service with my iPhones. (I've never owned an Apple computer though.)

The two times I've had a problem they've just swapped them out for a new one.

Great company, made me consider a Macbook Pro as my next cpu purchase. :)
During the warranty you should expect that kind of service from any product
Rain on my parade all you want. My experience has been great.Your 1 iPod experience and weak article from a year ago aren't going to convince anyone in an Apple thread. :bye:
Had more than one ipod and one nano and know a ton of friends with iphones/macs/nano and ipod and would say 9 out of 10 had these problems. You can google as well if you want to get your head out of the sand.I don't get why apple followers tout apple as so great to actually honor their warranty. Wow!!
Nine of ten friends! Well that load of scientific data sure settles the matter. You clearly only come in here only to rip Apple so I'm not sure you're worth an honest reply. But the fact is even under warranty most companies make you send your device in for repairs and after a few weeks of waiting you get a refurbished product back. It speaks volumes that you can walk into an Apple store and often walk out in minutes with a brand new iPhone. So yeah, Wow!! You want to talk about a product with REAL reliability issues, look no farther than the Xbox. They had a full 33% failure rate on millions of products sold. If you're one of that lucky third, you're waiting weeks to get someone else's refurb back. Any company selling millions of devices will inevitably have some fail, but Apple's reliability and customer service are top of the industry. And that's backed by their position year-after-year at the top of customer satisfaction ratings.
   Why would you ever bring up the Xbox in an iPhone thread?

Their store staffs are trained exceptionally well. My wife doesn't seem to care at all that she's on phone #3 with them for things that have gone wrong in the last few weeks/months. As long as I don't have to deal with them, she can do what she wants.

The battery does have a longer life -- if you keep it turned off, disable a lot of the features, just make a couple of calls a day on it, etc. It's unreasonable to have all these extra features on the phone and expect people NOT to use them. The phone itself is just a major energy hog, but it sounds like you're actually getting pretty good battery life based on what you're doing with it.My phone is constantly shuffling from the home charger, to the car charger to the office charger.I've seen some oversized iPhone cases on amazon (and maybe Best Buy) that have an additional battery built into them. This giant-sized battery is supposed to give you more run time, so that could be an option for you.

Because it is the poster boy of poor reliability in the electronics industry. Go back to playing teh Gears, Ren. You obviously haven't been following the conversation here. And FWIW, I love my Xbox and have never had a single issue with it.

You forgot to mention that it was an MS product as well ;)I swear I can't determine which is more entertaining....the Apple vs MS debate or the Dem vs Repub debate. It's like none of these groups consider they are in the same boat with better options for each of them.

Thanks, I think I'm actually quite clear on what's going on. It looked to me like everyone was talking about the iPhone and Apple products and you responded by hating on the Xbox and randomly bringing Microsoft into the conversation. Yeah, the Xbox red ring thing sucked, but Microsoft did a pretty darn good job addressing it with the coffin/free-shipping repair policy.
And FWIW, I love my Xbox and have never had a single issue with it.
For what it's worth, I have an iPhone and love it, and I've never had a single problem with it, but I still agree that the Apple iLife black turtleneck fanboy crap is way over the top sometimes.

First, the red-ring fiasco didn't just suck. It was absolutely monumental. My point wasn't to randomly rip Microsoft, but to provide Walter an example of a company with real hardware issues. Apple's issues are miniscule in comparison. I know everyone here loves to paint me as nothing more than a turtleneck-wearing Apple fanboy, but the 360 comparison was intended to simply be a counterpoint to Walter's assertion that Apple products had a reputation of failure.

Osaurus, you know if you can use Google Voice on an unlocked iPhone?
Haven't seen any apps that would allow this other than the Google app that is currently not approved. I will let you know and report back.
Saw a blog post today that Google is working on a mobile web app that will have all the functionality of a the voice app that was rejected to get around this issue. No timeframe mentioned though.

The Tekkeon MP1200 is a great combo case with an external battery sewed in. It just about doubles the battery life of my 3Gs. I can go a full day with brightness cranked, Exchange ActiveSync push email, and Bluetooth and WiFi activated. And the coolest thing is it allows you to charge and sync your iPhone with iTunes using a plain old mini USB cable rather than the proprietary Apple cable. It is a little thick, but it's surprisingly light. I feel like I can grip the phone much better with the case on.

One other thing that should help -- if the 3.0 firmware winds up like the 2.0 branch, the first major update will improve the battery life substantially. It's currently in beta; the rumor is it will be released sometime next month.

Downloaded an app called siphon that is supposed to work with a GV account and a Gizmo5 account. The result is free incoming and outgoing calls (with some hitches of course). I have all the components, but have not been able to make outgoing calls on my iphone as of yet. I will play around with it some more and report my findings.

Got it to work. About a 2 second delay which is pretty annoying. I imagine this type of VoIP programming will improve greatly. I ran it on straight 3G and not Wifi. Don't know if it works better either way.

ETA: Less delay for sure using wifi connection. A little echo persists though, but what do you expect for free? Feel free to PM me with questions.

anybody else having trouble updating apps from itunes today? I have 4 updates and keep getting the error: "we could not complete your iTunes store request. There is not enough memory available. There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later."

It looks like I have plenty of memory on my laptop.

Has anyone used that tethering site that Manback posted. How does it work? Does it cost more on the bill?

I'm on vacation and while iPhone is great, would love to get on Internet from computer.

When I went to download it, I got scared because it said something about changeing the settings or something.

I have used it and it works (I did the USB connection as my laptop does not have bluetooth). No idea if there will be extra charges, I doubt it as the iphone has the unlimited data plan.

Anyone else having trouble connecting to the 3G network? I'm trying to get onto iTunes, and all I get is "Loading..."
If there were problems, it'd likely be area-dependent.
Yeah, I'm not sure what's up. I've got the 3G icon and 5 bars, but still nothing.
Try putting your phone into airplane mode, then switching back. That'll basically reboot your network connection. If that doesn't work, sometimes it helps to turn of 3g temporarily and just use Edge. This can be done via settings.

That's a gripe of mine too, I have seen 3G, 5 bars and no data connection, no actual error just none of the apps freaking work. :ph34r:Sometimes turning off 3G works, but then you are on the slow sucky Edge.

I don't think that will be a software update - I think the iphone can already handle it - it is ATT that needs to flip the switch

That is true re: ATT, however, if you look at the "instructions" that came with the 3Gs, it shows what the MMS button and text messaging will look like once available. That button simply isnt there now at all, and I assume it will appear with a software upgrade. Hoped it was today.

TomTom is out. Will try it later today.
Couldn't wait for TomTom so I just bought Navigon last week and I love it but my timing is terrible. Anxiously waiting on the comparison reviews to come out. Let me know how you like it.
A friend has navigon and i plan on comparing the two this week...take both out on town and see how they do.I hear that Navigon's lane assistant thing is very nice though, and that TomTom doesn't have that. But it will be interesting to see professional reviews comparing the two.

Just did a search for a not too well known place in my city. Navigon had no idea, TomTom found it easily. TomTom takes an early lead.

any good football apps out there - looking for a good fantasy app, score/stats app (better than ESPN and Sportster) and hopefully something like the MLB.com at bat with audio/video/scores etc.

For fantasy, I'm using Fanball.com's app for fantasy info (all sports).

Read the reviews at the App Store

After using both for a day or so of light usage (not a lot of experience) TomTom seems better for finding points of interest, while garmin seems to have a superior navigation system (though both are similar).

The main disappointment I have with BOTH of them is their inability to utilize the GPS in the iphone very well. I constantly get poor GPS signal warnings, sometimes no signal at all, and at the start of most trips, it takes a while (read a few blocks, potentially going in the wrong direction) before it picks me up.

Both seem to re-route me very quickly and easily if I take an unexpected turn, which is great.

What I need, and will likely pay for when it comes out, is the hardware for the navigation software. It's a suction cup that'll stick to the windshield, holding the iphone, while also charging it and enhancing the GPS signal. If I can get a strong enough GPS signal, either of these navigation options would be great. But right now it's the limiting factor.

When driving, I had the iphone up on top of the dashboard, under the windshield, in clear view of the sky, so that wasn't the issue. I'm curious to see how they "enhance" the GPS signal via the suction cup/hardware thing. Anyone read anything about that?
