The Apple iPhone Thread (14 Viewers)

On a serious note we should be discussing the screen technology more, this seems like the big "wow" item of this iPhone. 326ppi is insane, I'm really looking forward to seeing one of these up close.

Dimensions for EVO: 4.8" x 2.6" x 0.5" Dimensions for Iphone 4g 4.50" x 2.31" x 0.37"
Interesting. EVO about 35% thicker than iPhone. How do weights compare? Looks like Apple is going for uber small and light. Tough from an engineering perspective to pack the same horsepower and functionality into a significantly smaller case. I think a major test here will be iPhone battery life as compared to EVO. When you make something that small with that much horsepower/functionality, gonna be tough to keep battery life up.

This sounds right to me. The screen sounds absolutely ridiculous. That could be what's groundbreaking here. I know folks were oohing and ahhing about the EVO screen -- I'll be super curious to see how this compares.

we'll i was on the fence between the EVO and iphone and am going with the iphone.I went to check out the EVO in person and i couldn't imagine holding it up and using it as a phone, just way too big, would be a bit embarrassing using it in public. Also all the reviews about the battery running out after a few hours spooked me.I'll stick with the tried and trusted Apple as i know they put out solid dependable products. would have liked to see a Verizon option but ATT is improving their network.
i didn't test the EVO out as a phone, but the extra size made for an awesome browsing experience, IMO. 4.3 seems to be just about the right size for a pocket browsing device. After playing with it for 10 minutes or so, it will be hard for me to go back to a 3.5" screen device.

agreed. can't wait to see the i4 screen in person - it seemed to be the biggest step forward to me today. That and the gyro.

EVO screen is larger, but has a worse PPI than the N1, Droid, and Incredible. I'm sure it looks great on video but not as great on text.

Screen sounds pretty slick.

Engadget hands-on first impressions:

We've just gotten some face time (ha ha!) with the new iPhone 4, and let's just say this: it's incredibly sexy. We'll hand it to Apple, the phone is so thin it's kind of mind-boggling. The 3GS by comparison looks bloated. Feast your eyes on the pics below, and check out the FaceTime video demo after the break! Oh, and special thanks to hand models Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg.

Some takeaways about the device:

-As we said, it's shockingly thin.

-The screen is truly outrageous -- you basically cannot see pixels on it. We're not being hyperbolic when we say it's easily the best looking mobile phone screen we've ever laid eyes on.

-The build quality is really solid. The home button feels much snappier, and on the whole it just feels like a tightly-packed device, but it's not heavy.

-The side buttons are really nice and clicky.

-iOS 4 is very familiar -- there's not a lot added to fit and finish.

The general speed of the whole OS is way snappier. The camera app in particular is noticeably faster -- shots get snapped in an instant.

And  at anyone switching to Sprint, no clue why they merged with Nextel only to pick up a bunch of towers that only 10% of their phones can even utilize.

Their network is in worse shape than AT&T.

And trust me, AT&T is putting a lot of work into their new LTE program.
I'm sure you realize coverage/reception by all carriers is hugely dependent on your location. Verizon is pretty good across the board. ATT is actually pretty good in certain areas but it's terrible in a lot of densely populated urban areas (NY, LA, SF, etc.). Sprint is like the reverse image of ATT. It's pretty terrible in non urban centers but it's excellent in urban areas. They're equal to or better than Verizon in a lot of big cities.LTE is great and all but it has zero impact on phones right now. Do you really think ATT is pumping out money to make their 3G network less crappy in cities? They're trying to make their network better not by building more infrastructure, but by making their customers use 3G less. No more unlimited data. ATT service terrible in NY? Build more towers? No, let's offer free wifi in Times Square (which is actually a good idea given what they have, but think about that one).

I'm looking forward to LTE because hopefully I'll be able to use the same phone on ATT and Verizon. How awesome would that be? Give it about two years. Yeah, ATT/Verizon say LTE will be rolling out in select cities later this year and in 2011, but 2012 should be when ALL phones will be LTE phones.

The phone you buy right now, whether it's an iphone/evo/whatever should be the last 3G phone you'll buy.

Does iPhone have voice search, voice text, voice command and voice everything else? Serious question.
iphone does have basic voice commands to make calls, play music, etc. Their voice search can done through a Google app. It doesn't have nearly the sophistication of Android right now. Dictating emails, texts, voice searching, voice mapping, etc. is pretty awesome. Apple is trying to catch up tho with their acquisition of Siri.

From everything I've seen (tech specs don't specify) the EVO is roughly 180ppi - 220ppi. What stands out to me is that it is listed as only capable displaying 68k colors. So it has to dither to give the impression of a full color gamut. Combine that with the large physical size and low ppi and there should be a huge noticeable difference between the EVO and iPhone 4.

Anyone know if the new iphone uses the same usb cable as the current 3gs/touch? I know I'll probably have to buy new cases/docks for the new ipod touch, but it uses the same usb connection?

Side question: people never seen to mention that the iphone is also an excellent ipod. How do these new phones compare as MP3 players?
I'd like to know this also. I use my iphone as an ipod more often than any other function on the device -- and I really like the ease of using itunes to organize everything on my iphone. Does the Evo have the same type of user control?
When I bought my Motorola Droid I had planned to keep my iTouch. It was obviously withiong 2 days that I no longer needed my iTouch. My droid is now my music player, gps, phone, ...

+1. Can you download music, movies and TV shows on the run on an Android device like you can on an iPhone?

So what's the point of buying an ipad when you can buy this instead? A bigger screen?
:shrug:Great resolution is nice, but a 3.5" screen is still a 3.5" screen for viewing and touching.
MEH. I'll take the smaller screen when the device can also act as my phone.
I don't think it's a one or the other kinda thing as they are not designed for the same uses or market, although there is some (obvious) crossover in functionality.
For me, I'm really glad I resisted the urge to jump on the ipad. This new iphone does everything that I'd use the ipad for, and then some. And all for a fraction of the price? Thanks!

I bought an iphone about 3 months ago, so I am new to AT&T...anybody know how much it will cost me to upgrade?

I really enjoy my Droid, but this is the first time I would seriously consider moving over to AT&T for the iPhone4. Not sure if someone can answer this in this thread but if someone on my plan (Verizon) is due for a new phone because they fullfilled their contract obligations, can they assume my spot and I leave the plan? I have over a year left on my phone but if my father can take my phone I would like to leave Verizon.

I read something here about an $18 upgrade fee, but not sure what it was for.
18 bucks? Is that serious?
This is what I read here.http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index...&p=11918563
You still gotta pay for the phone.
Well yeah. I didn't mean that is all the phone was going to cost. :excited:

Ok, so how much is the phone? I didn't see it after a quick glance through here.

If you got your iPhone three months ago, you're not going to be eligible to upgrade for another nine months or so. That's the only way to get the $199/299 subsidized price. Probably runs $650 or so unsubsidized, at least that's what the 3Gs was.

I've had my 3GS for almost exactly one year. Likelihood of me being able to upgrade before my current contract runs out (+ an $18 upgrade fee)?

Oof.In other words, I'll get comfy with this one.

I've had mine for less than that and I'm eligible. So yes, you'll be eligible.
How do you know if you're eligible? Upgraded fiancé to 3GS around Xmas, before her contract was up.

Great keynote today... lots of surprises spoiled by the leaked prototype but pretty good nonetheless.

I'll be pre-ordering on the 15th. :goodposting:

Uber small? Its barely smaller than one of the biggest new phones out there?

Any idea how ATTs new pricing plan is going to work with data? If it's no longer unlimited I can see some outrageous bills with the 4G. This is the only thing holding me back from ordering now.

I have to say, I'm very disappointed with no tethering/hotspot type stuff. : (Otherwise, it looks pretty awesome.
TetheringWith Internet tethering on iPhone, you don’t need a Wi-Fi hotspot to surf the web from your computer. Instead, you can share the 3G connection on your iPhone with your Mac or PC notebook and connect to the Internet anywhere. When your iPhone is tethered, you can still send and receive data and make phone calls.

Tethering is not available in all countries. See your carrier for availability.Do we know that AT&T will support this?

$10 for each additional 1 GB
Are these video calls counting against data? seems like that 1GB will go fairly quickly
Not currently capable of video over 3G... just Wifi. Though they are working on arrangements with carriers, so yes... it will be something to consider in the future. IMHO Bandwidth will scale much like HD storage has. a 2GB $25 plan will become a 4GB $25 plan will become a 10GB $30 plan as time goes on and wireless bandwidth is fully commoditized. Once video calls become somewhat commonplace the system will scale to accommodate and the pricing will follow suit.

Intriguing. iPhone looks superior in all aspects except 4G (which isn't available here so IMO it's a wash). Factor in a far superior integrated media store (iTunes for books/movies/music) and a good bit smaller form factor (while maintaining much better pixel density) and it's pretty clear which is best for me, personally. Nice to see some quality contenders on both sides tho :wall:

Really? You prefer wi-fi only, iPhone to iPhone only video chat to Android's 3G, 4G, and wi-fi video chat?

You prefer a 3.5 inch screen to a 4.3 inch screen?

You prefer a 5 mega-pixel camera to an 8 mega pixel camera?

You can prefer the iPhone to EVO, but I don't see how you can look at that comparison chart and come away with "iPhone is superior in all aspects except 4G".
