The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

John Gruber via twitter

Remember when that one Android phone was so popular that the carrier was overloaded attempting to process preorders?

Can we get an iTruce here and cut the fishing & b-slapping in the EVO & iPhone threads?

If Mac vs. PC, Crip v. Blood & 360 v. PS3 were any indicator, this will go nowhere and only end in bloodshed.

Mods, can you get on board with this? Maybe make a designated **Official Phone Fighting Thread**?

:pickle: Deal.

How much better do we think the iPhone4 is going to be than the 3Gs? Especially given that the 3Gs will have the updated OS with multitasking, folders, etc.
Better screen, better processor, front facing camera, camera with a flash, gyroscope, etc. Seems to be exponentially better.
I don't know what a gyroscope is.M only concern is that iPhone5 will be available on other networks and/or be a significantly better phone and that they won't be offering these upgrade deals like they are now.Although perhaps the re-sale value of the iPhone4 will cover the termination fee with ATT . . . but not the cost of the potential verizon iPhone5.####, I dont know what to do. :mellow:I never sold anything on eBay. Just bought a few things.

I ordered the 16GB version b/c I don't anticipate storing a lot of songs or video on this thing. What are people's thoughts on how valuable the extra space will be on the 32gb version?

A few things that SHOULD happen:

A large % of existing Iphone with ATT users upgrade. If this % isn't at least 75% that's not a good sign but I would be shocked if this isn't the case

The % of new phones sold that are to new customers.

I wouldn't equate a "upgrade" with a "sale" since it makes no sense for existing iphone/att users to not upgrade.

The proof will be how many new customers are making the switch.

You know in less than a week Jobs will say "we sold X amount of Iphones!" but in reality how many are existing and new customers is the key.

I'd just upgrade to iPhone4 if I were you. I think that the upgrade to i5 will be further out than usual, as there's a good chance new carriers will be available and the screen size jumps to at least 4". If you buy an i4 when it's released, I'm guessing enough time will pass that you'll be able to upgrade to i5 with little or no penalty.

What will be telling and more important will be the new sales from users who never had an iphone.
this is me.I despise Apple and everything they stand for, but I preordered one today. :bag:
Didn't you say you didn't even know what an EVO was a couple days ago? If you hate Apple, why wouldn't you at least check your options?
I'm an AT&T user on a family plan and have no desire to switch providers b/c it's super cheap and works pretty much everywhere. My fiancee has an iphone and I think it's pretty awesome, plus FBG just released an iphone app and we plan to develop more content in the future for the iphone and ipad. Made too much sense to even consider looking elsewhere.I'll never own a mac computer or even an ipod most likely, but for a phone I think I can put up with this. We'll see how it goes. With a $15/month cost for the phone service and $15/month cost for the data, this thing will basically cost me $30/month. That's too good to pass up. The reason I never had a smartphone in the past was the cost was more than I felt it was worth since I'm around a computer or wifi network for most of the day anyway.

Put up with what? Seriously I don't get it. We have both windows& mac machines, 3 macs , 2 windows,3iphones,couple of ipods and a zune. Both have +'s & -'s but not enough to totally discount one OS

that's fine if it works for you. I don't really want to get into it, but I despise the Apple business model that forces everyone to use their stuff. I really hate itunes as well and that's something I probably won't be able to avoid anymore.

Yeah, that's a no brainer - iPhone is the clear choice for $30 a month. Is that cheap family plan new? I'm leaning toward an EVO b/c the full data/txt/voice plan is $70, while AT&T is closer to $95, but if I could get wifey and I on a family plan where it was only $30 a month for my part, I'd reconsider and probably go iPhone.

fwiw..if you tried to order at some point, but didn't think you got through....there may be a iPhone in your cart that you can use to order

im sure this has been covered, but i dont feel like wading through the piss fights in here....

my contract is up, how much will it cost me to upgrade?

well, the true cost isn't that cheap. the reason it's cheap for me is because if I didn't even have a phone, the family plan bill would only be $15 less, but I'm the 3rd phone on the plan. Adding a 4th would also cost $15 more. But, if it was just 2 phones, the cost would probably be $75/month or something. I think the first phone is about $60 and each add-on is around $15 or so depending on your specifics.AT&T/Cingular have had these for awhile.

for me, I paid $199 for the 16GB phone plus an $18 upgrade fee so it was $217 up front plus $15/month for the 200MB data package. I assume they'll add in tax later as well.

:goodposting:FWIW, I think you're probably fine with the 16GB v the 32GB i4. iTunes should be in the clouds very, very soon, and you'll be able to access all your data from the web so local storage won't be a big issue.

does it change things is i already have a iphone 3g?
No.
dammit, i thought there was some sort of "deal" for people extending their contracts

I think you may be able to trade it in and get a credit, or you can sell it on ebay or elsewhere.

I think the deal for extending your contract by 2 years is already factored in to the $200 price on the 4g phone.

I have a ton of music, so I'm looking forward to the extra capacity. Plus I'll probably record some videos. Not sure how big the files will be since the quality has improved. If you don't have any of that, the 16gb should be fine.

I don't get it? The thing sold out everywhere, they should have manufactured more at the release. The phone has been incredibly well received, anyone who has used both an iPhone and EVO knows which is the better phone. The EVO just crushes the current iPhone in a ridiculously unfair way, it's almost embarrassing that some people will try to convince you otherwise (like moderated who clearly has never seen an EVO since he regurgitates the phrase "pixelated")The EVO is a better phone than the iPhone. No contest.
Has this thing killed the iPhone yet or what?CardTrader: Yes it is CRUSHING the iPhone that was released 3 years ago!!! AhahahahHAHAHa!!!

Oh. So you mean it's better than the old iphone?

CardTrader: YESSSS!!! (CERTIFICATES!) YESSS!

Um. Ok. What about the iPhone that's going on sale within a few weeks of the Evo? Shouldn't we compare Apples and, well, Apples?

CardTrader: :lmao:

Is there a reason they had to lie about the Evo sales numbers? They sold 65,000 or so? Apple sales dwarf that. Is that why they lied?

CardTrader: :bag:

Oh or is it because Apple consumers are morons and buy lesser products?

CardTrader: YESSSSCERTIFICATECYTOKINESTORM+iPHONEKILLAHHH!!!!11111

Mmmhm.
Just judging by the Apple users in here I would say yes.

Talking to the Apple guys at work (2 of them) I'd say they know what they want but also realize how good a phone the EVO and Android is as an OS. They also do not by the hype just because Steve said so.

In other words they recognize the where the iPhone falls short and where it does not.

WTF are you talking about? Yes, it's better than the iPhone that's going on sale in a few weeks....Apple spent it's entire dev conference describing their new phone which was basically a mirror image of the EVO but with a smaller screen. Apple will always sell more phones than any individual phone. It certainly doesn't make it better, is that a hard concept for your pea-brain to grasp? And yes, many Apple consumers are morons and buy lesser products.
You realize your talking to someone who wears (or said he did in another thread) silly bands. So your probably wasting your time.

You must not know Apple's model. That's not in their vocabulary. Why give anyone a deal when they know if they want an IPhone they'll pay the bucks anyway?

Not quite sure if its really better at this point.

But what I find funny is how iPhone fanboys like to poke at the droid fanboys about comparing just specs...yet they now want to act as if the iPhone 4 will be so great based on what? SPECs...hilarious.

but again, the ongoing fued is funny, they are both really good phones. Who gives a damn if OTIS or others think their phone is better?

Who cares if Card Trader thinks the EVO is better?
This. I think the iPhone is a great device and I really like Apple products. I chose not to get one beause there were some things missing I needed in the first few iterations (copy/paste, multi-tasking, push email, etc.). Every time I looked to get a new phone, I had some hesitation on the iPhone. I got an EVO last week and really like the device, but that's because it worked out well for me and what I need it to do. Both are great devices. Like picking Kobe or Lebron, there isn't really a wrong answer.
Ive been looking at both devices.Everyone I know who has an iPhone here loves it, but complains about AT&T.

Those who have had Sprint android phones love them, but complain about Sprint. (for me, I have never had a problem with Sprint anywhere I have been so I am hesitant to leave them).

Verizon guys, love them and thats fine...im looking to see what the new droids they come out with are like too.

But the back and forth bickering is hilarious.
I think this has to do with the phone you buy. My experience with AT&T was terrible. I switched to Sprint and never had a problem through 3 phones.....until I changed to the Pre to play with WebOS then it was just as bad as AT&T.

What will be telling and more important will be the new sales from users who never had an iphone.

Where were the big flashy commercials that run every hour for the EVO? I don't recall seeing any while I was watching Reality TV and TMZ. Now iPhone commercial I've seen them everywhere so they have to be the better product. All the cool people have them I know because I see them on TV.

The deal was that people not through their current contracts were getting an early 'gift' by being able to upgrade now to the iphone 4.

Other programs synch to the Touch so I'm pretty sure they should also synch the iPhone. I use media monkey for our Apple products it handles larger libraries on a NAS drive much better than iTunes.

I would assume they will be in the 1.5-2gb range for the newer resolution. If you downsize to the iPhone/Touch they run about 500gb. That's for the average movie. Then again you can lower the bitrate and get even smaller or up the rate and they could grow to bigger than the source material.

Disagree. A sale is a sale, they all count the same. Every "upgrade" is a consumer that is re-committed to the platform for another two years instead of jumping over to the competition. Retention is equally as important as conquest, especially in light of the recent verbal sparring between Apple & Google, Adobe et. al.

Does it matter if I pre-order from Apple or At&t? What's the difference, or is there any?

eta: Already under contract w AT&T

My issue is if I decided today I want the iPhone, without getting into it with Sprint I could not pre-order and keep my same number I have now (contract with Sprint not up til July 1...and from conversations I have had with them about jumping, its July 1 and not a moment earlier)

I'm a huge iphone supporter since Day 1 (still have my original 1st Gen Edge-Network iphone) but is it really that hard to wait 16 days to order a new phone?

I was playing with a doc's Evo today in the OR, and I must say the voice features (voice texting, voice googling, etc) were impressive... will iPhone4 have this?

That's why it's best to grab a google voice number. No pains on switches and it can ring multiple phones.

you're right. you do have issues

Mrs. Champ went to visit the local ATnT store to pre-order. She was told all in-store pre-orders had to be completed by 4:30 today in order to receive home/office delivery on the 24th. Anything after 4:30 home/office delivery will be received on the 25th or later. No mention about pre-ordering from the website. Also as a sidenote, she was told no white model phones until later in the summer.

AT&T sold out of iPhone 4 pre-orders for launch day.

"Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We'll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24."
