The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

I know this has been asked and answered. I tried to search but to no avail

IF I upgrade to the new iphone, will my old one work as an ipod with no service plan still on it?

It'll work, you just won't be able to connect to the AT&T network. Same as if you were in a dead spot, I'd imagine.

Thanks. Will make a great new toy for my daughter.
Interesting question for those who do not sell theirs. Also, would just the phone not work...could you still get to everything via wifi...still get to any apps...internet and so on? Or would they have a way to cut that off?

I still can't get my preorder through. I tried like 10x yesterday and several times today... Andnow preorders aren't getting here until mid July.

Maybe I'll just wait for the win7 phone.

iPhone 4 orders through Apple now ship by July 14, arrive even later

By Sam Oliver

Published: 03:15 PM EST

Shipping dates for iPhone 4 slipped for the second time in less than 24 hours Wednesday, as preorders for both the 16GB and 32GB models are now scheduled to ship by July 14.

The delay means that some customers may not receive their handset until nearly a month after it launches on June 24, when shipping time is considered.

Earlier Wednesday, Apple moved back new iPhone 4 orders, promising they would ship by July 2. Those orders were scheduled to be delivered between July 6 and July 8, meaning customers could have to wait as long as two weeks after the June 24 launch to receive their iPhone.

Assuming the same shipping time, orders sent out on July 14 would not likely arrive until around Monday, July 19. That would be 25 days -- or nearly four weeks -- after the June 24 launch.

Apple announced that more than 600,000 devices were preordered on the first day of iPhone 4 availability. The Cupertino, Calif., company also took the opportunity to apologize to customers who encountered difficulties in placing their preorder.

Both Apple and AT&T, its exclusive wireless carrier in the U.S., experienced issues, as AT&T's servers struggled to verify eligibility for some existing customers, and Apple was forced to turn away callers to its toll-free telephone number.

Orders through AT&T are no longer an option for U.S. customers, as the wireless carrier announced Wednesday that it was suspending preorders due to demand ten times higher than for the iPhone 3GS. The company said it has temporarily suspended preorders so it can fulfill the orders it has already received, and the availability of additional inventory will determine whether they will resume taking preorders.

Preorders remain limited to the black iPhone 4 model, as the white version is listed as currently unavailable for purchase. Third-party retailers such as Best Buy have also halted preorders of the white model.
This is for all orders placed after June 15th, right?

It will be the same as an iPod touch. If you want to test it, just pull the SIM card out.

just received this e-mail from AT&T:

Thank you for your order. Your iPhone4 pre-order has been received and is being processedin the order it was received. You do not need to take any action. You will receive an email fromus if we need any additional information. You can track your order online by entering your order number at www.wireless.att.com/order_statusor by calling our automated system at 877-782-8870. Please note: Your order status may not be available if your order was placed within the past 24 hours. Thank you,AT&T
good sign, I can track the order and they have given me my new phone number.

Hold on a second

I just went to see if I could pre order it

I can and they waive the fee, BUT

it is also giving me an unlimited plan for $30. I thought they got rid of that

it is also giving me an unlimited plan for $30. I thought they got rid of that
they are letting people who have it now keep it, but new customers can't get it.
Got it.Not sure if I need it. I just checked and thru 12 days of my cycle I habe used 36.49 MB.But with the new phone, I plan on getting the slingbox which I would imagine will boost thatAnyone use slingbox and have a number that they use

I have a friend visiting from Hong Kong. Where can he get a SIM card to he can use his iPhone in the US? Do they sell them at airports?

I had lunch with several people at work who tried to pre-order the new iphone yesterday. Out of 6 people, 3 were succesful. 1 thinks she was successful but never got a confirmation. 2 of them failed all day and didn't get them. All of them were pretty pissed at the process, but they're all excited about getting the new iphone.

So we read the reports saying that Apple selling around 600k pre orders. These are spectacular #'s, and not surprising at all. My coworkers are saying "everyone's gonna have an iphone, awesome".

Now I'm an iphone lover but an ATT hater. It just occurs to me, "so what's ATT's service going to be like now if it's not just people upgrading their iphones?'

Silence.
Last time, you can own an Iphone and NOT run it on ATT.
Relax, I'm not attacking the iphone. Iphone on Tmobile EDGE is not what I'd call a great alternative tho.My wife is asking me to buy her a white one, network be damned. You can count her as one of the new users on the overloaded network. What's up with white iphones not being for sale for a couple months?
They are definitely the more desired and preferred Iphone coming out so you've got to wait

When are you doods selling your old 3G & 3Gs iPhones?
Assuming the new phone gets here on the 24th, I'll probably put up my current phone in the next few days and try to time it so I can ship it out to the winner as soon as all my data is transferred over.
Exactly what Mrs. O is planning to do -- put it up for a 7-day auction on the 17th, and then after she receives the new one on the 24th, ship out the old one to the winner.
Other than being down $200 for a few days, is there any reason to put up the auction to end a few days later to make sure there are no issues with the phones selling out, etc?

Not sure how hard they are to get, especially with current terrorism laws. I think you can get prepaid SIM cards online through GSM carriers.

Dumb question: Are your contacts on your Sim Card?

If not, if I sync contacts with Outlook, which contact group takes precedent? i.e. If a person's contact info. is in my phone, but not currently in outlook, will it now be in both? Or will it be deleted on the iPhone because the phone just accepts outlook's contacts? Or vice versa?

No, they aren't. You store them on the HD and back them up either via Mobile Me or during a sync on iTunes (if you have that option checked.)

When I backup my iPhone via iTunes, does it make copies of my pics/videos in my Camera Roll?

The reason I ask is because if/when I upgrade to iPhone 4, I don't want to lose my pics/videos. So since my iPhone is backed up, when I upgrade to iPhone 4 and I do the initial connect to iTunes, will my current Camera Roll transfer to new iPhone 4?

Yephttp://www.ehow.com/how_5253971_import-sim...cts-iphone.html
Are my contacts currently automatically saved to my sim card on my iPhone 3Gs, or do I have to do than manually somehow? I'm asking these questions in preparation of converting over from 3Gs to 4(even though I didnt pre-order and only did the Radio Shack thing . . . debating on best way to buy and sell still).

You hit the wrong button, I'm guessing, and reserved one instead of preordering one.
UPdate for those who are concerned for their pal Britney Spears:I called Apple. They said that I had in fact as Otis suggested reserved one. The friendly guy on the phone informed me that they will ship one reserved for me to the store that I specified on June 24th. I will have to present my Drivers License & SSN to get the phone.I guess I have to just go now and wait in line? I'm not very patient, so I might give up if the line is very long. I can just order one when the madness dies down I guess.

I figured.Yes you'll have to wait in line, though hopefully there's a separate line for people who reserved vs. those coming in trying to buy whatever stock the store has.

Questions for those who will sell their old iPhone on eBay:

Fiancee tells me the unlocked ones are going for a lot more money (sounds like it's about a $100 premium over regular, based on what she's telling me). Is that right? If so, I'm assuming unlocking is the same thing as jailbreaking and is pretty foolproof? (I jailbroke my iPad with no trouble at all). If so, why the heck would people pay more for this if they can do it themselves? Are you guys unlocking before selling?

Wonder what the statute of limitations on my "reservation" is?If I show up at 8PM hoping there is not much of a line, I feel like they will have sold it off to someone else probably.

Verizon-compatible CDMA iPhone 4 rumored to be in production

By Sam Oliver

Published: 08:20 AM EST

Rumors of a CDMA iPhone compatible with the Verizon network in the U.S. persist, with a new report alleging that the handset will begin shipping to Apple in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes reported Thursday that Pegatron Technology has received orders from Apple for a CDMA iPhone 4, according to industry sources. Those orders are expected to help the company grow its revenues in 2011.

"Pegatron will also start shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 to Apple in the fourth quarter and is currently using its plants in Shanghai, China to produce the products, the sources noted," the report said. "The company is also working on gaining orders for MacBooks and iPads from Apple."

Pegatron manufactures products in a number of markets, including notebook and desktop computers, TV set top boxes, cable modems, game consoles, LCD TVs, digital music players, handsets, tablet PCs and e-book readers.

The latest DigiTimes rumor supports a report from The Wall Street Journal in March, which said that Apple was working on two new phones: the iPhone 4, to be launched next week, and a new Verizon-compatible CDMA phone that the newspaper said would go into mass production in September. The Journal also reported that Pegatron Technology would handle the manufacturing of the CDMA iPhone.

In May, DigiTimes reported that Pegatron had won the contract from Apple to produce a CDMA iPhone. Previous iPhones were built by Foxconn, which also assembles Apple's Mac mini, iPods and the iPad, and is the company's main supplier.

But Foxconn has recently come under fire after a number of widely publicized employee suicides. The manufacturer has responded to the incident by saying it will increase wages for employees and may relocate some of its factories in China.

I would think Apple would be sure they got out of their 5 year exclusivity deal with AT&T before mass producing an iPhone for Verizon.

Why this would be a shock to you or anyone is beyond me. Assume most current Iphone/ATT users will upgrade, don't you think?
Cause all these people are dropping $200 or more?
And that never stopped same people for dropping as much or more in the phone they currently have.
True, but isn't that a nice bunch of money for Apple?

The pre order #'s should not surprise anybody.

A lot of 3G owners did not upgrade to the 3GS when it first came out. Most of them will be upgrading to the 4.

ATT is allowing 3G owners early upgrades to the 4.

Not even factoring in new owners, the above factors alone guaranteed a high preorder rate. If this caught Apple or ATT by surprise, they were snoozing.

edit: 3GS owners early upgrades to the 4.

Bingo. When it's all said and done, most of the existing user base will upgrade. They've a good thing going right now.

I've given up trying to pre order for my son and I, I'll have to wait until supply>>demand and I can just walk in to a store and buy them. Hopefully by then I can find a white one

I refuse to believe this because then I'd be forced to believe they were monumentally stupid and I can't believe that. They know that their existing iPhone users are upgrading at a minimum.
