The Apple iPhone Thread (14 Viewers)

I bought a IP4 for my fiance and hers definately has complete signal drop when held in the left had 100% of the time. She intends to get a case when available to remedy.

I have a 3GS on 3.1.2 software and cannot duplicate the problem.

Both phones are without cases.

Having used the 3GS for almost a year, I will say I LOVE the Iphone 4. Particularly the screen.

As of right now, my 3GS offers more features since it's jailbroken.

Having said that, I'm going to hold off on upgrading until the IP4 gets a Jailbreak.

Also of note, the Iphone 4 camera takes great pictures except at night when using a flash, the subject is too yellow/orange.

Just picked mine up this morning from ATT. Does anyone know if there are any free/ reasonably cheap turn by turn GPS apps that work?

went to the local store a little before 7 and there was a sign on the door that said "we have moved to a new location". I went to the new location and they literally sold out three people in front of me...

They said they will be receiving a small number between 12 and 2 so I guess I will try to get lucky then.

AT&T store by my work has a line spanning the length of the shopping center and around the corner.

Incredible. Way longer than the last two years.

Wow, I got in line around 645 and was probably about 25th in line, they got 40 phones but 10 were DOA, I got one of the last 2 16gb ones. Wasn't a bad wait at all.

I still have my 3GS which has a preloaded app called "Compass." Does iP4 still have this app, because on my 3GS it provides turn by turn GPS.

How's that? My "gps" works no differently than it did on my 3G. I still have to manually move through directions...how the heck do you have turn by turn using the freaking compass? It's only encompass for me...

Press "Compass." Then press button on bottom left (with iOS4 it looks like an arrow without the leg). That should pull up a map with a blue dot of your approx. location. There are two buttons on bottom (Search and Directions). Click on Directions, then enter your starting point and ending point. Turn by turn directions are after that.

lol. I was wondering what Compass was doing for you that I never noticed. You're using it to get to the Maps app. You can skip the Compass step and just click on Maps. That's not what most people refer to as "turn by turn" directions though. Unlike with a "real" GPS, you have to step yourself through it using Maps. And it doesn't automatically recalculate if you miss a turn or something.

Radio Shack just moved me up to #5 on the list!

They are still giving $200 for the 3Gs. They said Apple shipped 5000 more phones this week.

So I will either be getting the phone this Thursday or next week it looks like.

Was going to post this in the other thread but looks like it was locked for some reason...I stopped into my local ATT store over lunch today and here’s what they told me:The ATT store will be opening its doors at 7:00am tomorrow and will have about 50 iPhones available on a first come, first served basis. Both 16GB and 32GB available but not sure how many of each. They will only sell one phone per person in line. I may drive by a little before 7:00 and I’ll just keep going if the line is already long. Looks like my next option is the preorders that reopen tomorrow but they’re not sure when the phones would be available and shipping.
Stopped by the store around 5-10 minutes before they opened and was 42nd in line, but turns out that they only had 37 phones. They said they may get more later in the day but wouldn't commit to numbers or how they would distribute. I'm going to stop by around lunchtime and see if they got more in and if not I'll just preorder.
I got to the store around 6 and there were about 40 people in front of me. They had 60 phones and were saying that there would be a shipment today with an unspecified number more. I'm pretty sure that everyone in line before the store opened got one.It might be worth a call to the store around the time FedEx normally delivers to ask if the shipment came in. They should have given you a raincheck or something.
They did say they would hand out the rainchecks for the phones arriving later after they processed all the available phone sales but I wasn't going to hang around that long.
Checked back and they did give 30 certificates out to the people in line this morning that didn't get phones that were for the 30 phones they were receiving later today. They waited until all the phones were sold first though so didn't hand them out until 8:30-9:00.

Lol ya I was hoping I was totally missing a feature of that. Unfortunately the map has always done that, with or without the compass. To get true turn by turn you have to buy an app, which I am thinking about doing...may just by a holder for my car with the money that I'll hopefully be getting from radioshack

MotionX GPS Drive does a good job. It costs 99 cents and includes 30 days of voice turn-by-turn directions. If you like it, you can buy a longer-term subscription to the directions as an in-app purchase.

Had a coworker hit up 3 ATT stores today.

Store 1: 730am, line was 50 people deep, he said forget it.

Store 2: 930am, no line at all, sold out.

Store 3: 11am, he actually called ahead and they had some in stock. He rushed out but they sold out before he got there 10 minutes later.

He said #### it and just ordered it online from ATT.

Can't even begin to imagine how many iPhones they will sell on D1 for the Verizon Network... likely to double their market share in the first month.

:lmao: Just saw this . . . could slow down current iphone sales if confirmation is forthcoming from another source.
Well ####.Now THAT changes everything. I'm done with my current ATT contract next July. Do I wait until next summer and get it (or version 5) on Verizon, or get it now (for free essentially with the $200 Radio Shack deal) and get locked into ATT for 2 more years?

Nah verizon people hate the iPhone and thinks it sucks. They couldn't possibly want one after making my ears bleed with all their talk about how much better the droid is and android software blah blah.I bet they sell 1 or 2 phones, max.

:unsure:Cry about it.Seriously, everything I've heard from people with verizon is that the iPhone is 2nd rate compared to the android OS, why would you expect it to do well? And unlike those clowns, I own an iPhone, and am posting in the iPhone thread.Where were you with your cape and trusty steed to ride in and rescue this thread yesterday or the day before when people who do not and will not ever own an iPhone were in here stinking this thread up with joke links about the ihand and gloating about e antenna issues?Oh that's right, you kept your mouth shut. Why don't you try it again?

You seem upset. I own both, have used both for the last week, and am choosing to stick with the EVO over iPhone4. Not even close for me.That is all. Feel free to continue the personal insults and temper tantrums over phones.

While that's true I still don't see how it will sell better on verizon than AT&T. There are many more options for verizon as is, their smartphone market is more robust.I don't get the defensiveness in some people, I don't own stock in either company, I'm being serious, does anyone really truly think it will sell better than on AT&T?

Not at the outset becuase of all the millions signing 2 year contracts this past week, but eventually because of Verizon's better network, they will carry more IPhone users in a couple years.

If you really think Verizon would not have the best selling phone in their history when the iPhone comes over your not looking at the full picture. No way it doesn't smash every record they have.

Well now thts a whole different story. If you're saying over time that I can buy into. But I don't see existing verizon users with droidsnor incredibles ditching their phone in 6 months for the iPhone.I also don't see a mass migration happening anytime soon, as people on AT&T will not want to sacrifice a perfectly good iPhone with AT&T to pay an early termination fee and then buy another iPhone.Sure, some AT&T hold outs may switch and pick up their first iPhone, but AT&T has been making some serious strides bolstering their networks, and building out their lte networks. This move would pilot evn more pressure on AT&T to better their network. In the end this can only be good for the consumer. All I'm saying is I just don't see the iPhone on verizon selling 1.7M + phones within the first 3 days. It doesn't make sense.

Verizon subscribers want iPhone2nd qtr 09 I think they had 85+ million subscribers

Market Research showed

19% very likely to buy iphone

33% somewhat likely

I think it's safe to say that if someone is out of contract, looking to get an iphone, and can get it for the same price/monthly cost on ATT and Verizon, Verizon would (generally) win out. I don't think there will be a mass exodus of people breaking their ATT contracts and switching to Verizon (heck, I would tho).

Everybody wins. Verizon users can get the iphone. ATT users who plan to stick with ATT now have a less crowded network.

Verizon Network >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ATTSimple...plenty have not gone to an iPhone simply because of the fear of how bad ATT is in some areas. Now you have those that would go to one in Verizon, plus those with iPhones that would end up jumping for better service on Verizon. It might not initially sell as strong as those who just bought one are not likely to jump that quickly...but give it a year and see how quickly iPhone5 on Verizon sells. And, it seems you are the defensive one in here.

Heh, good info. So why does it seem like everyone with verizon (at least on these boards) hates apple/iPhone and are seemingly rooting for it to fail?Or is it just a case of the loudmouths standing out more?
I think its the few loudmouths do stand out.But I have hardly seen some mass Verizon hate of the iPhone on this board.

I don't think Apple cares who will sell better. Whatever Verizon adds to their kitty is X amount more than they sold before. I'm sure there's a sizeable market of people that just didn't buy iPhones because they wanted to stay with Verizon. As long as Apple can keep their phone from falling behind the Droids they should make a ton more money and it will probably start selling more and more as AT&T contracts run out. Unless they drastically improve their service. It's a win-win for iPhone users and Apple.

My buddy has an iPhone but he keeps a Cricket phone on him for when he needs to actually make phone calls.

True Story

I'll never understand why people clamor for the newest software upgrades.I get that it might be resolving some issue from the past, but it's my belief that most new upgrades just bring more issues in the beginning.I rarely will leap at anything until a few months after it's been released (software-wise, that is). I usually stay one version behind on all Windows releases and I won't upgrade my iphone OS until almost forced to...I just see no reason for it.
So you have 3gs without the 4.0 software?Care to perform a test for me?Hold the phone in the same manner that problems have been arising for the iPhone 4, and let me know if you see a signal drop.It seems with my 3GS it's more when you touch he back/sides of the phone, but it's definitely there and I'm very curious to see if all 3GS are like that, or only those with the update
Neither myself or my friends have been able to recreate the problem with any of our 3GS phones (six phones). None of us have upgraded to 4.0 though either.

I'd break my contract to get on Verizon. I love the iPhone but AT&T sucks moose ####.
Yes, AT&T is weak in some areas, but you'd be a fool if you don't think AT&T is scrambling to improve their network so they don't lose a ton of subscibers if this happens.I work in telecom, my job involves getting these wireless companies on air, and I'm involved with a large percentage of their new site constrictions and upgrades, and I can assure you AT&T has been very busy all over the country.
