The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

so I went away to the beach for the week and all of a sudden I got this message constantly that said 'this accessory is not compatible with this Iphone" I google it and most people say it's some kind of dirt in the charging dock jack-hole. I figure I got some sand or something in there so I almost collapse a lung as I try to blow it out and after three days the problem seems to be gone.. but now my Iphone won't charge at all and the message i get now is something like "charging not supported with this accessory".. well i was getting that message until the battery totally died and now i'm getting nothing.I peeked in the charging dock-hole and it looks like there might be some lint or something in one of the sides but it's hard to tell and i'm afraid to go and dig in there as I don't want to short it out.I also noticed that inside the charging dock thing it's a bit green looking :X .. my BIL said it might be corrosion.. MLIA
I got the same thing a few weeks ago, and it turned out to be the white cable. My daughter got it and chewed the end and bent a few on the leads in the plug. Check it with another cable, if that doesn't work, you may be up a creek.

What is included in the latest software update? I rarely plug my phone into the computer (I see no point since I can buy music from the phone). When I finally plugged it in, I was prompted to update. And I would love for the next iPhone to have an Android style notification bar, you can't beat simply pulling down the bar and your text messages, emails, facebook alerts, etc are in one place for quick access. It's one of the few things that's cool about the overly-complicated android os.
If you haven't updated in a while you won't see a major change. iOS 5 in September is supposed to have the exact bar you're talking about though i think.
Really? That's great! I can't wait.
iOS5 is great... on top of that notification bar on the home screen you'll get notifications on the lock screen when you get emails/phone calls/texts etc... Fully customizable as well.Even in its beta state, it is running very well.

Haven't read too much here lately... I have an almost 3 year old 3G... running ios4 has been painfully slow, but I've endured it. Really getting on my nerves now. Should I go get a 4.0, or wait for the 5? General consensus?

I'm in a similar boat Keerock, though I have a 3Gs. I'm waiting for the next generation, whether it be called a 4s or a 5. I also had the "This accessory not compatible..." problem. I sprayed a ton of air into both ports with an air compressor and it seems to have fixed it.

How is battery-life? I pretty much have all push notifications turned off and check email manually because of the battery drain.

does keeping alot of apps in the multi-task bar drain a lot of unnecessary battery life? I've heard different stories, what's the truth?

I've noticed it affects performance for sure. Not sure about battery life.
For the most part it doesn't have a big effect but it depends on what apps you leave running. Multitasking on iOS is created to preserve battery life, so it puts background apps into a sleep state, allowing only very specific functions to remain active. Apps that keep Location Services running are the biggest background battery drain; a GPS app for instance. Continually pinging the network to keep your location updated will drain your battery really fast.

Yea it drains for sure, but it depends on the app(s).Does anybody even utilize the multitask bar itself?
No. The default implementation of the multitask bar is horrid. Even with jailbreak apps it's not that great except to kill everything to speed the processor up.

Thanks for the info on the task bar everyone.

I'm not a tech freak, but is this as big as I think it is?

the end of flash?

And does that mean us iPhone users will be able to see all those videos that we can't?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/23/iphone-5-coming-to-sprint-other-carriers-in-mid-october/?a_dgi=aolshare_facebookIF apple does release the new iPhone 5 on all 3 networks expect their useage/sales numbers to be off the charts. Stock should likely experience another 10-20% runup as well. :excited:

Sill wondering if iPhone 5 will be worth the wait or it I should just upgrade my 3G to the 4 now...
With the iPhone 5 release being little over a month away, it'd be silly to upgrade now. I mean, you've had the 3G for how many years and already skipped two new releases, what's another month? Also, rumors are that the iPhone 4 will be offered as the low end model once the 5 is out, so even if you don't need the 5 you'll save a few hundred on the 4 in another month.

Will the iPhone 4 run the new iOS?

Yes, I'm running it on a 3GS and a 4 right now.

Great, thanks.Any insight as to what a 4 might cost after the 5 comes out? Looking to ditch my Droid X and I might just pay for a 4 if they're not too expensive.

I believe they usually drop from $199 with contract to $99 in the past.

Who currently has the cheapest or best iPhone plan? Assume the person can sign a 2 year contract and likes to text and go on the internets here and there.

My wife & I are with Att. Total bill for the 2 iphones is $198/mo including tax.Unlimited calling to any mobile/any carrier. Tons of rollover minutes.

Thanks.Yeah, it looks like AT&T plans are cheaper than Verizon. That rollover minutes feature is pretty cool.

I dont know if this has been talked about here, but I just learned a great way to send group emails thru the iphone

Go to notes and type in (or paste in) the email addresses separated by a comma. Then copy and create a new contact. Paste the addresses into the email spot for the contact and you have a group email. When you send it, it may say that the email address is not an address or something like that. Dont sweat it, it goes thru.

This has been huge for me so I figured I would post it

Why do you need/care about rollover minutes if you have unlimited calling?

Maybe he's using a bunch of minutes to land lines?

This is correct. In a gvien year, I typically save all my landline calling for the month of October. I plan to call random landlines throughout the month to use those thousands of minutes. I might even call my own house and leave the receivers off the hook.I will get my money's worth.

Still no word?
I heard it leaked last week that Sprint will be offering iPhone 5 in October with an unlimited data plan, to try and gain some of the market share.
Just as long as Sprint users don't use it to make actual calls they should be fine. I thought AT&T was bad, but a GB of mine has Sprint and seems like he has 4x the number of dropped calls.
Been on sprint for 11 years...I don't recall more than 3-4 dropped calls in that time span.

what's the latest with iPhone 5 supporting LTE (4G)? I am tempted to get an LTE hotspot device, but do not want to get locked into a 2 year contract, also do not want to wait a month for the iPhone 5 announcement if I can avoid it.

I am guessing no, ugh, will probably just upgrade to bionic so I don't have to deal with 2 bills per month

If it truly was to have LTE it would have leaked a long time ago. No idea what the holdup here is exactly now. I think the blogs have basically pieced together most of the key specs by this point. Only the camera was affected by the earthquake.

I gotta say I'd be surprised if it does. The most likely thing I see them doing is combining the various types of communicatoin chipsets (CDMA/GSM) into a single phone, since they're currently segmented into a verizon phone and other GSM phones. Apple's not into segmentation, so I imagine they'll do whatever they can to just have ONE phone to rule them all...and in the darkness BIND THEM!But who knows, I've been surprised before, but I'd expect a single iPhone 4s/5G with improved specs, with iOS5, and let the 4G network expand, and then introduce 4G next summer.

I've been reading the rumor sites for months. Seems like there is very few leaks of legit information. Apple is doing a good job on this one.

Has there been any specific date "leaked" as to when iOS5 is going to be released?

I have a Verizon 4 and am a little bothered by some of the new high level features (e.g. Cloud-stuff) that my kids Touches have access to that they are not talking about adding to the Verizon iPhones until iOS5.

I last heard that iOS5 would be finalized by end of September, but that doesn't mean it'll be released then. Whenever it is, there will be a scheduled event, and the OS will be released afterwards.

For my next phone (end of year, or early Jan) I'm debating between the Droid Bionic and iPhone 5. I'm concerned about going over to the dark side with Apple though.

Be afraid, be very afraid. The funny thing is that many people pointing to the new androids are comparing them to an iPhone 4, which is over a year old.I suggest waiting at least until you see what the iPhone 4S/5G has to offer, and read some reviews before going Droid. They make good phones, but if history is any indication, the next iPhone will be very competitive with the current droids just released, and will likely be more polished.iOS5 should also be very nice, coupled with iTunes match. That's what I'm most looking forward to.
