The Apple iPhone Thread (6 Viewers)

I think the newer phones are too big.
I'm with you. I like that I can reach the entire screen with my thumb while holding it in one hand (without doing any major contorting or using some crazy grip that might cause me to drop it). There are differing opinions on this but the fact that the iPhone is still the best selling phone by a large...large margin seems to indicate that the size isn't too much of a concern. Not saying apple won't look into a bigger screen, but I don't see it coming in the form of a much bigger device. I could see them reducing the bezel a bit, but honestly any screen shift is going to cause issues with screen resolutions. Apple is big on fixed pixel sizes on their products for maximum image quality. I don't see them simply adjusting the size by a few hundred pixels in either direction.
What do you mean by this? There was certainly a shift from ipad2 to 3 which would suggest something else. Really they have never released a device to my knowledge with a scaled dpi, right?
There was a shift from iphone 3GS to 4 as well... but it was achieved via a change in technology (pixel density). Apple follows a strict KISS policy when it comes to screen resolutions on iOS devices because they want to keep it easy for developers.... and they want to make sure things look their best (scaled art, generally speaking, looks like crap compared to fixed-pixel design). IF they move to a larger screen, it will require an overhaul of all apps in the ecosystem... not 1 generation after requiring it again with the iPhone 4's move to retina display.

I'm not saying they won't do it... I'll just be surprised if they do.

Which one do you have?
IPhone 4
I can only tell you that the fact that every other smart phone in the world believes the "sweet spot" between screen size and keeping the phone small enough to fit in your pocket and use with 1 hand is in the 4"+ range. Apple is a great innovator, but they don't lead on everything, and screen size is probably the biggest feature that they're running behind on. If consumers truly preferred 3.5" screens, all of the screens on the new Androids coming out every month would be hovering in that range. I'll bet you a 6 pack of a good IPA that when the iPhone goes to 4"+, you'll love the new screen real estate, and you won't mind the added size at all.
I could easily present similar anecdotal evidence saying that since the iPhone is the best selling smartphone in the world it proves that it's 3.5" screen is preferred by users. The reality of the situation is that manufacturers are producing the larger screen sizes simply because it is an easy differentiator from the iPhone. Marketing 101: bigger=better.
oof. You're ignoring the fact that iPhone users don't have choices with regard to screen size. On platforms in which there are lots of choices, the larger screen size designs are clearly the choice of consumers.C'mon goon, you're smarter than this.
That new Samsung that advertises "is it a tablet, is, it a phone? it's both." looks way to big to me. My answer to their questions is that it's neither.

Completely agree. I want my tablet to be large enough to comfortably read for long periods of time and my phone small enough to be comfortable carrying in my pocket. I think the Samsung wouldn't accomplish either.

Could be. 5.3" may be beyond the sweet spot. I haven't had the opportunity to hold one yet, so I can't add to the discussion.I do know many thought 4" displays where too big at one point, but after using it and seeing that it easily fits in the pocket, it's become the norm.

Technically they could move to a physically larger screen with the same pixel dimensions (640x960) but lower ppi. The iPhone 4S is 330ppi, while the new iPad is 264ppi. Simply reducing the new iPhone screen to iPad ppi would let them increase to 4.3" diagonal screen while keeping app dimensions exactly the same.ETA: They'd have to deal with a marketing backlash as they heavily promoted the retina screen as being >300ppi. Keeping a 300ppi minimum they could get up to a 3.8" screen.

Went to the Apple store Saturday to biy my wife a smart coverfor her ipad.Picked up the cover off the rack & used the Apple store app to pay by scanning the barcode. Very cool but also weird to just walkout of the store without an employee checking you out

I just got the 4s yesterday. Sprint is my carrier. I get this pop up of "sim fail" (pretty sure that's what it says) then no service appears top left corner. This has happened a few times. Any ideas what causes this? I turn phone off and on then it's fine again. Strange. I'm wondering if there is a setting I am missing.

Pop the sim card out and wipe it down/off. Worked when I had this issue.

And Apple has received a patent for crack-resistant glass, which reaches greater compression levels on the surface and edges of the glass.
That is better news than a bigger screen. My link
One of the comments on that link state the next iPhone will not have Google Maps, if true, what is their plan?
There have been rumors of Apple developing their own map service since 2009 when Apple purchased a mapping company called Placebase. Since then, Apple has also purchased two other mapping companies that both created 3D virtual maps. This is clearly a question of when Apple will replace Google Maps with their own application, not if. But no one knows for sure when it will happen. Everyone thought it was a sure thing for the iOS 5 release and it didn't play out that way. Clearly Apple isn't just going to rush a simple replacement to market, they could have done that already.

I think the iPhone is the best phone out there, and I'll likely upgrade to the 5 soon as it comes out, but put me in the camp that says a slightly bigger screen would be awesome. More real estate = easier typing = easier on the eyes = fitting more stuff on the screen. All good things. I agree it can't be TOO MUCH bigger -- it needs to still fit easily in pockets. But as long as it doesn't get fatter, I still think it can grow a bit in screen width and still fit comfortable in most pockets.

I get the concern about not being able to reach the entirety of the screen with your thumb, but the trade-off is worth it IMO.

:goodposting: I was at a wedding this weekend and a guy had an Evo. Comparing it with my iPhone, I loved the extra real estate that the Evo had.:fingerscrossed:

I just got the 4s a couple weeks ago.

Is it a waste to have this phone with Sprint as your network?

I just went to the Apple store and exchanged my phone for a new one. My battery was draining at an insanely fast pace. The Apple genius ran a test on the battery which was fine so he thought it may have been a hidden setting or something...even hinted like it may be a network thing. Like the phone is constantly trying to connect to 3g even though it is.

I have done all the trouble shooting, turning off wifi when not needed, turning off gps on all the apps, closing apps when not in use.

Anyone experience this with their battery? I know people with this phone and they brag about the battery life.

Asking in case this new phone does the same thing.

I'm not following. So the store didn't exchange your phone? Or you had a 4s and they gave you another one?

Sorry. Yes I got a 4s 2 weeks ago, battery life has sucked, bad. I went to Apple today....they exchanged my 4s for a new one. Battery life still seems to suck. Already dropping fast. It's crazy.

Sounds like you have everything set to push, I've noticed the facebook app does this all the time  you should also make sure your mail is not constantly fetching, that will kill the #### out of your battery.

I'm on my 3rd iPhone and love it but I've never bragged about battery life.
:goodposting: I just ordered the 4s, my 3GS is awful now on battery life. What I love is how they exchanged the phone even though the genius said there was nothing wrong. Love my iPhone for what it can do, but it isn't a great phone. Still amazes me that the genius somehow convinced D-BO that his network was at fault and not the phone. If my kids play Angry Birds or other apps, the battery life drains like a bucket with a hole. I remember the AT&T network issue where the iPhone bars were wrong and so it made it seem like the network was dropping all the time, but my old Blackberry (which I wouldn't go back to) never had an issue. I still wonder if Apple intentionally did that to make it seem more like the network's fault than the fact that the iPhone is just OK as a phone. Oh well, I am in the fold, but it amazes me how well Apple has been able to position themselves to never be the real issue.

Top 3 things to make battery life better

-Don't set your email to push. If you have more than one email account (or even 1) this can suck the crap out of your phone. Apple now makes the push stuff a little more restrained, at one time games like words and others were a much bigger hog than they are now, but email still is a battery suck.

-Charge your phone on a regimented schedule and try to go from <10% to 100% at least 5 times a month, if not more. Just trust me. Worst thing you can do is bounce 30 to 50 40 to 60 70-100, etc.

-Screen brightness is another huge suck that is overlooked for things like location services.

And if you jailbreak

-Battery Extender can trigger SBS at certain SOC levels. This is useful if you know you won't be near an outlet for some time. This is even more useful on the 3GS and 4 because you can downshift from 3G to EDGE.

I do wish someone would come up with a cydia tweak to shut down push settings on 3G, but on with wifi. That would really help out.

As far as the battery goes. Heavy use during the day will leave me about 40% when I get home at 5:00pm. But, what I've done to curb this is:

- turn the brightness down big time. Nobody needs it bright.

- turn notifications off otherwise the thing will be looking for updates all the time (you can change the time it looks, I believe, but still).

- turn location off when not needed.

- turn WiFi off when not in use.

I've come around to ask myself how long should the battery last? A day is about right, charge it at night, repeat.

This one won't help you that much unless you sit right on the perimeter of a starbucks or something and it is going off/on/off/on.

ok, I have 3 seperate email accounts on here and changed them to fetch data every 30 minutes and push is off. I did this last night. Took the phone off the charger at 8:30 this morning. My battery is at 93% right now. This seems to have worked. I see all of the push notifications are on for Facebook, lol. Turning those all off will help too then?? Cool. Thanks

those concept pics are sweet, but i saw a piece earlier this week suggesting that we were still a couple years away from liquidmetal.

It was recommended in here earlier, if youre still not happy with the battery, go to www.boostcase.com it will solve your battery issues. Almost triples your iPhone battery.

I cannot suggest the boost case any longer. 1) it does NOT almost triple your battery. In fact it doesn't even double it. The mAh rating is higher (1700 for the basic I think... The big one is way too big) but there are inefficiencies in charging that cause you to lose ~10pct of that. 2) the best case out there now is the Phonesuit... By far. It is smaller than the boost but has 2100mAh ( more than doubles capacity). The build quality is higher too. 3)I own the boost, mophie, Phonesuit, and monoprice cases... I use the Phonesuit daily. My boost has split in half (!) and is in for a warranty replacement! The back of the case just came unsealed and flopped open. Great warranty policy but that's a bit unsettling.Go with the Phonesuit.... Not even close

Ever since those changes, and pretty sure it was the pushing of my emails that did it, the battery life has been insanely good. I text a ton, spend time on the browser, have all my emails set up. Been real happy the past couple days with it. Thanks for all the help.

Good to know. Does the Phonesuit have anything (shield, plastic) over the screen? My wife has an otterbox and loves it, but I hate the screen covering. I don't use a case right now but would love to have even more battery life - my phone died in the middle of the Roger WAters show the other night so I couldn't take any pictures nor tell my wife when I was headed home.

So I think I want to switch from my EVO to the iphone, but one of the things I do nearly every day on my EVO is download an mp3 of a sports talk show that I like every afternoon to listen to on the way home from work. It's not in itunes...I simply download it off the webpage and listen to it with a media player. Is there an option to do this in iphone? I messed around with my wife's yesterday and couldn't figure it out intuitively.

thx

It depends on some factors. Post the link and i'll check it out.

I don't have an iPhone, but when I used to download from radio stations I'd just download and drop into my iTunes playlist on my touch. Couldn't you just do the same thing on your iPhone? Download it to a folder and then import it through iTunes?
