The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

Convince me why I should get the iPhone5 over an Android phone.

I have an android tablet (Samsung Galaxy) and a Motorola OG Droid. One of the things I really like is tethering my tablet to my phone so I can use the internet wherever on my tablet (wifi only).

I've been getting ganked for a long time on Mrs. SLB's data/voice plan. Who has the cheapest/best/cheapest. We own (duh nothing is too good for my wife) the phone. Of course it is a III and has been "acting up" so I'm guessing an upgrade is in her future.

TIA

I use CSpire and my bill is $65/mo out the door including:• 500 Talk MIns (not including mobile to mobile or nights/weekends [7pm-7am weekdays])

• Unlimited Texts / Data / Audio Streaming (only 30mins free of video streaming)

• Free Tethering / Hotspot

• Handset Insurance (hard to get on an iPhone with some other carriers)

• Tax

UPSIDE:

• VERY cheap data/voice plan for the iPhone

• They are supposed to Charge for Tethering. I use the #### out of it and they don't. I set up hotspots which allow 2 remote connections easily.

• Coverage is solid nationwide with free roaming outside their network.

DOWNSIDE:

• Data speeds are slightly slower than ATT in my experience. Certainly not enough to warrant 2x the price, but it's noticeable at times.

• "Unlimited Data" only includes 30 mins of video streaming (but unlimited audio streaming).

• Additional video streaming available for small fees (steps up to $30 extra for unlimited video streaming).

Overall it's a great plan IMO.

Not available everywhere though.... gotta look into it.

Apple's announcement of the new phone will be made Tuesday.

1. The geeks and tech people will say what a disappointment it is. Just like the 4s was a disappointment, and the iPad was a disappointment.

2. The product will fly off the shelves and they will sell millions before the end of the year.

So will ios6 be available this week for iphone4?
September 21st.
What is iOS6 going to mean to those of us with 1st Generation iPads, and 3rd Generation iTouches or earlier? Since I have read on Apples' site that iOS6 isn't going to be compatible with them.
It means time for a hardware upgrade? ;)Seriously though I assume it will be business as usual using your current version of ios. Im guessing you won't be able to download ios6 at all, so nothing changes.

Or, Apple could just push it out to all the old devices, rendering them useless and guaranteeing themselves big upgrade sales.

Messing around with IOS6 this is the smallest delta between major OS revs ever. In any other cycle these would have just been rolled as 5.2 or something.

And C-Spire just announced they're launching 4G LTE :excited:

Who is they and where will they start?
They=anyone who carries the iPhone currently. Not sure where/when exactly, but in less than 24 hours we'll know...just seems to make the most sense that it'd start early one morning rather than directly after a presentation by Apple. That's basically how it went last year, with Apple and other stores like Verizon and AT&T selling iphones online and via phone i guess, starting at some ungodly hour, and then in their stores when they opened that day.

Don't they usually kickoff at midnight PDT?

Fun stat:

Base model iPHone (16GB) lists around $650... let's assume $750 for the average phone sales.

Analysts are projecting about 25 MIllion iPhone 5's to sell over the last 3 months of the year.

That's 18.75 BILLION dollars in sales of iPhone 5s alone.

Not counting iPHone 4s... iphone 4....

Not counting iPads.... Not counting Macbook Pros... Not counting iPods or Apple TVs....

Almost $20 BILLION in a single new phone release in 3 months. :lmao:

jesus christ....

$650 for a phone?!?!?!

Oh I guess that's with contract?

I'm mid flight heading back from the Cuptertino area. Should have stuck around and waited in line outside the event.

Where can I watch some sort of liveblog on this thing? And when does it start? TIA

Generally all the tech sites (mashable, techcrunch, etc) will have live blogs. Not sure on kickoff time. Yeah the iPhone is HEAVILY subsidized by carriers (usually to the tune of $400/phone)... hence why they lock folks up in contracts... to attempt to recoup some of that cost.

I think by "nobody" he meant "everybody,"

I didn't realize you meant price without the subsidy. That's crazy profit.

No way in hell do I pay more than $200 for a phone. Nobody is going to pay $650 for an iPhone 5. NOBODY.
iPhone 4s 16GB : $649Carrier Subsidy: $450End User Cost: $199You don't pay the full $650 but Apple is collecting that much for every one that is sold. ALL other phones have subsidies like this as well. That's why we have cell contracts here in America.

And also why Apple has piles of cash.

I have an android tablet (Samsung Galaxy) and a Motorola OG Droid (not running ICS...). One of the things I really like is tethering my tablet to my phone so I can use the internet wherever on my tablet (wifi only) and NOT HAVING TO PAY EXTRA FOR IT. Plus, I have unlimited data on VZW grandfathered in, so I'd honestly consider moving to a full-price phone in order to keep that. The full price for the iPhone seems outrageous to me.

Will they have video, or just a live blog?
I don't believe Apple allows live video from their events. So at any of those places, just a live blog. I know that CNet does one with live video commentary from some staffers. I watched it during the Amazon one last week and it wasn't too bad.

There are always people streaming video from Apple's events. I've watched live numerous times.

 get what you want. Reasons to get an iPhone:• Prefer IOS to Android• Already have apple products (work well together) • Have appleTV / Airplay Compatible Receiver• Want a phone with much larger accessory base / aftermarket supportAny good phone is going to run $500-700 for a non-subsidized price...Not sure what's up with VZW but CSpire allows me to set up a hotspot with my 4s with one click, I have unlimited data, and they've never charged me extra.

No one responded last time because no one cares what phone you buy.

I think Verizon's new plans allow hotspots with no additional charge. But I'm not leaving my grandfathered unlimited data plan to find out.
